Qiao Yi stayed with Lu Yanchuan in Tian City for another two days before returning to Capital City, having received Xiao Luo’s promise to attend school properly. Although she was unsure whether the kid really thought that way, at least verbally he agreed.
However, seeing Lu Yanchuan’s thoughtful expression, she guessed that Xiao Luo wouldn’t simply go back to school and behave.
“Why aren’t you stopping Xiao Luo when you know he won’t be obedient?”
On the way, Qiao Yi finally couldn’t help but ask.
She had a favorable impression of Xiao Luo, finding the kid akin to a neighbor’s younger brother, someone difficult to dislike.
Qiao Yi’s inquiry was ignored by Lu Yanchuan. Seeing that he didn’t respond, Qiao Yi huffed, turned her back, and decided not to engage with Lu Yanchuan anymore.
...
Upon returning to Tian City, Qiao Yi went straight back to the Qiao Family, and after dropping her off, Lu Yanchuan returned to the Lu Family. He also had to deliver the stamp album he had gotten from Qu Mansion.
The timing of Qiao Yi’s arrival at the Qiao Family was inconvenient, as Qiao Xin had also just returned with Lu Ming’s company. As soon as Qiao Yi entered, she saw Qiao Xin sitting in the living room.
It was indeed true that enemies often cross each other’s paths. Qiao Yi didn’t want to speak with Qiao Xin and went straight up the stairs to look for Zhao Wenjing and Qiao Benqing.
“Qiao Yi! Didn’t you see me sitting here!”
Qiao Yi frowned and glanced at Qiao Xin blocking her way. Why is this person so clueless? Always needing someone to snap at her before feeling good?
Qiao Xin was tilting her chin, guarding her flat belly with one hand as if she carried some treasure.
“Do you have something to say?”
Qiao Yi couldn’t pass by as Qiao Xin was blocking the staircase entirely, so she withdrew her gaze and looked towards Qiao Xin.
“Don’t be too arrogant! This is the Qiao Family, and in this house, I’m your elder sister. You don’t even greet me when you see me, this is your manner of upbringing… Ah!”
Qiao Yi shook off her hand, having slapped too hard just now; her palm was even numb.
Qiao Xin, covering her face, looked up at Qiao Yi in disbelief. She actually dared to strike someone in the Qiao Family!
“I’ve told you before, I’ll hit you every time I see you. You haven’t forgotten that, have you?”
Qiao Yi’s gaze roamed over Qiao Xin’s face, as if searching for the next place to strike.
Intimidated by Qiao Yi’s gaze, almost at a loss for words, Qiao Xin clenched her fists so hard her nails were nearly digging into her palms.
She actually dared to!
“This is my final warning. If I’m around, you better quiet down, or next time it won’t be as simple as just a slap to settle it.”
Qiao Yi suddenly raised her hand, and like someone frightened, Qiao Xin flinched and covered her face with her hands. However, Qiao Yi was just scaring her. After Qiao Xin’s expression turned ugly and she lowered her hands, Qiao Yi calmly extended her hand and firmly grasped Qiao Xin’s chin.
“Some people can be treated like humans, and I’m willing to reason with such people. But some are only fit to be treated like training dogs. Without some use of force, how would a dog understand human speech, right?”
The last few words, Qiao Yi whispered right into Qiao Xin’s ear.
Feeling the person under her grip trembling, Qiao Yi dryly curled her lips, wiping the hand that touched Qiao Xin on Qiao Xin’s clothes a couple of times before pushing her aside and stepping onto the stairs.
“Are you okay…”
“Get lost!”
Qiao Xin pushed Lu Ming’s hand away angrily, covering her face as she furiously left the Qiao Family.
With the troublesome presence out of sight, Qiao Yi rolled her eyes and went straight to Qiao Benqing’s study.
“Dad, you wanted to see me.”
“Sit down and talk.”
Qiao Benqing pointed to the chair beside him and let Qiao Yi sit down, then he took a document from the desk and handed it to her.
“Take a look at this.”
Qiao Yi took the document and skimmed through it, her expression gradually turning solemn.
“The Sun Family is splitting up and selling the old harbor district project? Why? Did they get wind of something?”
The document in her hand was the contract for the sale of the Sun Family’s harbor project. Such a contract would definitely not be sent voluntarily to the Qiao Family by the Sun Family; it was something Qiao Benqing had went to some lengths to obtain.
“That’s correct. The actions of the Sun Family are very abnormal. I remember you know one of their illegitimate daughters; see if you can get some information from her.”
The Sun Family had maintained a steady status in Capital City for so long primarily because of their profound mystery.
The Sun Family was so secretive that even when they held banquets, they only invited their own relatives by marriage, and some newly arisen families couldn’t even recognize all the members of the Sun Family.
Being able to preserve such mystery for so many years in such a complex place like Capital City speaks to the skillfulness of the Sun Family.
Qiao Benqing, certainly out of options, had resorted to scheming against someone like Sun Keke, with whom Qiao Yi had only a passing acquaintance.
Qiao Yi wasn’t reluctant to help, but given Sun Keke’s awkward status and the recent events, suddenly reaching out to her might not yield any useful information.
“I know it’s difficult for you. In a month’s time, it will be your birthday, and you could use the birthday banquet as an opportunity to get to know the people from the Sun Family.”
Qiao Benqing, of course, knew the difficulty; after all, an illegitimate daughter might not know much about her own family’s affairs.
But the old harbor district project was too complicated; if it really was dismantled and sold by the Sun Family, it would be hard for the Qiao Family and Lu Family to proceed with their subsequent plans.
Furthermore, once the Sun Family transferred the contract to someone else, the Qiao and Lu Families would have to pay a higher price to buy back the contract, and might even offend many people.
Just thinking about it, Qiao Yi understood why Qiao Benqing was worried. If possible, she would certainly want to offer help within her means. Since Qiao Benqing already had a plan, Qiao Yi would not refuse.
“When the time comes, we’ll do as you said, but there might be… some issues on the Lu Family’s end.”
“Talk to Yanchuan about it when you get back, so he’s forewarned.”
Qiao Benqing handed the document back to Qiao Yi, which she had brought back. The harbor project was no small undertaking; even if it began, it would take at least two to three years to finalize, leaving them plenty of time to prepare.
“Yiyi, Yanchuan is here; why don’t you have dinner before you leave?”
Zhao Wenjing’s voice came from outside the door, Qiao Yi and Qiao Benqing exchanged a glance and then stood up to walk out together.
They had to inform Lu Yanchuan about the Sun Family’s matter; after all, he was leading the project, and even Qiao Benqing did not want to risk offending Lu Yanchuan over such a minor issue.
Lu Yanchuan was already waiting in the living room downstairs. Seeing Qiao Yi descending, he unexpectedly lifted the corners of his mouth, showing a hint of a smile.
Qiao Yi ignored Lu Yanchuan, instead sitting down next to Zhao Wenjing. Even though it had only been a few days since they had seen each other, Zhao Wenjing missed Qiao Yi every day.
“I’ve just told Yanchuan that after dinner you should leave. I made your favorite, sweet and sour fish, and cream of mushroom soup tonight!”
