From Apocalypse Boss to Farmer: My Vegetables Make Me Stronger!-Chapter 65 - 60: Has She Discovered Us?
After leaving the room, the woman with short hair went into the one next door.
The moment she pushed the door open, she asked the people inside, "Did you all see that?"
Seven or eight people, both men and women, were seated in the room, all staring intently at their respective monitors. In the center of every screen was Gu Xi, filmed from various angles in the adjacent room.
A middle-aged man in the lead nodded grimly. "Looks like there’s no problem."
"Have you checked her background?" the short-haired woman asked another woman with long hair beside her.
"We have. Gu Xi is a wanderer. A group of pioneers found her in the ruins and brought her back six months ago."
The long-haired girl recalled the information from the file as she spoke. "The only noteworthy detail is that the person who found her was Wei Heng, the former deputy captain of the Special Service Team. Everything else seems normal."
"Can we confirm her status as a wanderer?" the short-haired woman asked.
"We can," the long-haired girl confirmed, nodding without hesitation.
Order was gradually restored after humanity eliminated the last Zombie Emperor in Year 28 of the apocalypse.
Every child born since then has had their DNA and other data collected.
In the years since, the country has conducted several censuses, collecting data from anyone who has ever entered or exited the major bases and camps.
But there was no record of this Gu Xi in the central database. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎
This at least proved that before she was brought back to Camp No. 9527, she had indeed never entered any of the major bases or nearby safe camps.
Combined with her age—she looked to be in her early twenties at most—it was safe to assume that the girl was undoubtedly a wanderer who had been scraping by in the ruins and had never set foot in a human settlement.
Her identity was confirmed, but the short-haired woman frowned.
"Liu Ru, is there a problem?" the man in the lead asked.
Liu Ru was the short-haired woman who had questioned Gu Xi—a High-level Spiritual Ability User.
She placed the wristband she had just put on Gu Xi onto a strange-looking machine, which had already collected all of Gu Xi’s stats.
She stared at the machine, waiting for the data, and shook her head slightly. "I could feel it. She wasn’t lying just now."
It was just... Liu Ru had a strange, inexplicable feeling.
She didn’t know what was so strange, though.
It just felt odd for no reason.
After a moment, she lowered her gaze to the machine and said, "Let’s wait and see. We’ll talk after all the results are in."
Just then, on the large central screen, Gu Xi suddenly looked up at them.
Zhao Yang, the researcher closest to the main screen, jumped. He turned his head and asked, "Did she spot us?"
"It’s possible," Liu Ru said, staring at the screen thoughtfully. "She’s extremely alert." She had already noticed that when they were speaking.
’Then again, that’s normal. For a pretty young girl to survive in the ruins, you can only imagine how sharp her instincts and awareness must be.’
Zhao Yang muttered under his breath, "Her Perception is incredibly sharp..." Their micro-cameras were so well-hidden that even a High-level Spiritual Ability User wouldn’t necessarily spot them so quickly.
The man in the lead frowned. After watching the main screen for a moment, he turned back to Liu Ru. "Are all the stats in?"
Just then, the strange machine emitted a DING.
"Yes, let me see." Liu Ru took Gu Xi’s data and fell silent.
"What’s wrong?" The long-haired girl next to her tilted her head to look, only to find that all of Gu Xi’s readings were as flat as a straight line.
This showed that her emotions had been completely stable, without any fluctuations. It basically confirmed that she had been telling the truth.
But...
The long-haired girl’s gaze landed on the last line of the data. "Her internal X Energy levels are so low," she exclaimed.
The others nearby looked over when they heard her.
One of them muttered, "That’s normal, isn’t it? Hasn’t she been scraping by in the ruins all this time?"
As everyone knew, wanderers who scraped by in the ruins mostly ate and used things they scavenged from the pre-apocalypse era.
These items were countless years past their expiration dates and came with all sorts of issues.
But those expired foods certainly didn’t contain any X Energy.
However, precisely because pre-apocalypse items had become rarer and harder to find over the years, many wanderers who used to live in the ruins had voluntarily returned to human settlements in recent years.
Gu Xi appeared to be just one of them.
There was nothing strange about it.
But Zhao Yang, standing to one side, still found it a little hard to believe.
’These X Energy readings... are just way too low.’
Liu Ru suddenly looked up. "She’s a Wood Element ability user. And her talent for planting is incredible. The files show that the mutation coefficient for crops she handles is universally low."
Especially for the crops she grew herself. Their mutation coefficient was shockingly low.
And that was precisely why she had risked exposing her own identity to take on this mission.
"No wonder her internal X content is so low..." one of them said, glancing enviously at the young woman on the screen.
’A Wood Element ability user with a talent for planting... How enviable.’
The man in the lead, however, frowned. "But the fact that she bought information from Huang Er is still highly suspicious."
Anyone who could become a leader in a special department like this possessed extraordinary instincts.
But Liu Ru, a High-level Spiritual Ability User and a professional researcher in this field, explained, "But I don’t think she’s lying. Given her situation, let’s try putting ourselves in her shoes..."
Most of the people in the room were persuaded by her.
It wasn’t just because Liu Ru’s explanation was logical and well-supported, nor because Gu Xi’s readings were flat. It was because, to a certain extent, what Gu Xi had said was the truth.
She had merely omitted some of the preceding details.
Every staff member here had their own powers of judgment, and it wasn’t difficult to come to that conclusion.
The middle-aged man frowned slightly.
Rationally, he should trust the results, which were based on data and facts.
But he just had a gut feeling that something was off.
After a moment of thought, he suddenly asked, "What about her physical stats?"
Liu Ru said nothing, simply handing him the report.
The man in the lead read it once, thought he had misread it, and then read it again.
His brows furrowed tightly.
Zhao Yang and the others exchanged glances. "Boss?"
The middle-aged man handed the report directly to him.
After Zhao Yang and the others read it, they cried out in disbelief, "These numbers have to be wrong, right?"
How could her physical stats be this bad!
She looked like she was at death’s door!
But she’s a Level 4 Wood Ability User! How could her body be... this weak?
"This is too strange," Zhao Yang muttered to himself, staring at the lines of data.
"It’s not strange," Liu Ru said.
As the others looked up at her, Liu Ru fought the urge to rub her temples and sighed. "Don’t forget, she was wandering alone in the ruins, scraping by to survive..."
Life in the post-apocalyptic world was hard enough, let alone for a young girl surviving by scavenging in the ruins.
"But isn’t she a Wood Element ability user?" someone asked with a frown.
"It’s precisely because she’s a Wood Element ability user that she’s managed to survive this long." Liu Ru looked up at Gu Xi on the screen, who was now sitting primly back on the sofa, no longer glancing around.
’She must have sensed something,’ Liu Ru thought. ’Her awareness really is high.’
’This mission is going to be difficult to complete.’
Liu Ru stared at the young woman on the main screen, who had suddenly become quiet and docile, and let out an imperceptible sigh.
「In the adjacent room.」
After Gu Xi realized someone was secretly watching her, she thought for a moment and then deliberately acted more alert.
Because she knew... someone was behind the scenes, analyzing her.
