From Apocalypse Boss to Farmer: My Vegetables Make Me Stronger!-Chapter 110 - 101: Out of Control
The official farm’s livestock station was completed a few days ago.
This particular livestock station was a bit unusual. While it was nominally under the farm’s jurisdiction, it was actually quite far away, located near the Heng Mountain Range where the military was stationed.
That evening, Wei Heng parked their car in front of the livestock station’s main gate.
Perhaps it was an aftereffect of the previous night, but he felt the smell here was even more pungent than the stench he’d caught in the mountains.
Qi Xiang had already clamped a hand over her mouth and nose, looking as if she’d lost the will to live. ’If I’d known, I would’ve just stayed in South City to deal with that pest,’ she thought. ’This is way too foul... BLEGH.’
Gu Xi, however, stepped out of the car, her expression unchanged.
She looked at the high canyon walls on either side and the drawbridge-style gate built across the center, falling silent for a moment.
’It’s clearly a narrow pass, easy to defend but difficult to assault.’
’Isn’t this a bit of overkill for a livestock station?’
Gu Xi frowned. "This livestock station is located inside a canyon?"
Qi Xiang wrinkled her nose in disgust. "This place is so narrow. How did they even get those huge mutated animals in here?"
Wei Heng, who had been here once before, remained silent.
Lu Shiliu, who had come to greet them, explained, "Don’t underestimate this place. Once you pass through this canyon, it opens up into a whole new world..."
With that, he swiped his keycard to open the central gate and led the way into the narrow passage, which was only wide enough for one person to pass through at a time.
Gu Xi and Qi Xiang exchanged a look. After following him for about twenty minutes, the group of four finally emerged from the long, narrow, dark canyon onto a small hill, and the view suddenly opened up before them.
Inside the canyon, there was a massive, natural lake.
Around the lake, a herd of gigantic black-and-white cows, each as tall and sturdy as a small hill, grazed leisurely.
The grass was unusual, too.
The wild grass they were used to seeing was typically about the height of a person.
But the grass here seemed exceptionally lush. Most of it was over ten feet tall, with some stalks soaring to heights of ten meters or more.
Standing before this natural prairie, dwarfed by the massive mutated herd and the towering grass, humans seemed to have shrunk a thousand times over, looking utterly minuscule.
Just then, a breeze swept through.
The green blades of grass undulated with the wind, creating the illusion of a monstrous green tide.
It was strangely, breathtakingly eerie.
There was none of the tranquil beauty one might expect from a pastoral scene of "cattle and sheep revealed as the wind parts the grass."
Standing on the hill, Qi Xiang rubbed the goosebumps on her arms and couldn’t help but gasp.
A strange sense of unease welled up inside her, and she discreetly shuffled a couple of steps closer to Gu Xi.
’It’s strange. Even with two capable men like Lu Shiliu and Wei Heng right there, I’m somehow certain that the safest place to be is next to Gu Xiaoxi.’
Gu Xi was also taken aback. She hadn’t expected the military to be raising such massive animals here.
"Are those... dairy cows?" Qi Xiang asked uncertainly, taking a step forward and standing on her tiptoes to get a better look at the distant herd.
"Not ’are those,’ they *are*," Lu Shiliu said, crossing his arms. He raised an eyebrow, a hint of smug pride in his reserved expression. "So, what do you think? These cows I’m raising are pretty impressive, huh? Want me to take you down for a closer look?"
"Thanks, but no thanks," Qi Xiang refused flatly, her face cold. ’Are you kidding me?’ she thought. ’In front of those behemoths, I’d be nothing more than a bug for one of them to step on!’
Gu Xi, however, furrowed her brow slightly.
After a moment, she looked up at Lu Shiliu. "Are you the only one stationed here? Are there no other security measures in place nearby?"
"There are," Lu Shiliu replied. He didn’t know why she was asking, but he answered truthfully. "These dairy cows are normally very docile, but to be safe, the military has the nearby garrison send patrols..."
’But when Gu Xi said she was coming this morning, Lu Shiliu had no idea what she was planning. He figured it was best to avoid prying eyes, so he’d made arrangements to send the patrols away for the time being...’
Gu Xi lowered her gaze, thinking for a moment before asking, "Were these dairy cows this big when you took charge of them?"
"Of course not," Lu Shiliu said proudly. "A month ago, when these dairy cows were first brought here, they only weighed about a hundred pounds each..." ’This just goes to show my reputation as the military’s youngest Beast Tamer is well-earned. Look how well I’ve raised them.’
Qi Xiang was stunned. She pointed at the mountain-like herd in the distance and said incredulously, "You mean to tell me they’ve only been here for a month and they’ve already grown this big?" ’Are they even eating grass? Don’t tell me you’ve been feeding them growth hormones!’
Lu Shiliu: "..."
He was just about to explain that the grass here was special when Gu Xi asked another question. "This canyon—did the military choose it, or was it a location suggested by the base?"
Lu Shiliu froze.
Even he was starting to realize something was off.
At the same time, both Qi Xiang and Wei Heng looked over.
"Gu Xi, are you saying...?" Wei Heng’s brow furrowed, his mind racing.
At that moment, it dawned on Lu Shiliu as well.
"Hold on, let me check something," he said, glancing at Gu Xi. With a grim expression, he opened his personal terminal, his fingertips flying across the Light Screen.
He appeared composed, but the slight crease between his brows betrayed his anxiety.
After a moment, Lu Shiliu looked up. "Found it."
The three of them looked up at him in unison. Lu Shiliu said in a low voice, "This location was finalized by the Military Department’s logistics division after consulting multiple sources."
’South City didn’t have a hand in it?’ Gu Xi lowered her gaze, lost in thought. ’Maybe I’m overthinking this.’
But then Lu Shiliu continued, "There were twenty-seven candidate locations in total..."
Gu Xi nodded to herself. When the official farm’s boundaries were first drawn, she had noted how vast the area was. It was no surprise they could find so many potential sites.
Lu Shiliu continued, "Sixteen of them were sites the military had previously surveyed. The other eleven were candidate locations provided by South City..."
’If I’m not mistaken, this place we’re in right now must be one of the locations South City provided.’
Sure enough, Lu Shiliu’s next words confirmed it.
Qi Xiang looked at the giant herd in the distance and rubbed her chin. "One out of twenty-seven... What’s so special about this place?"
Lu Shiliu frowned slightly. He still didn’t understand what the problem was. ’Being able to accelerate the growth of mutated animals to harvest their Crystal Cores faster... isn’t that a good thing?’
After a moment of thought, he decided to ask Gu Xi directly. "Miss Gu, this place..."
But Gu Xi suddenly held up a hand, signaling for him to be quiet. She then started down the hill, quickly vanishing into the ten-foot-tall grass.
At the same time, a little green sprout shot out from under her pant leg and, in the blink of an eye, silently merged with the vast grassland.
Behind her, Qi Xiang and the other two exchanged a glance and hurried to follow.
Gu Xi wasn’t moving quickly.
The three of them quickly caught up.
After about ten minutes of walking silently through the grass, Gu Xi suddenly stopped.
Qi Xiang looked confused. Just as she was about to speak, Wei Heng stopped her.
Following Gu Xi’s gaze, she looked ahead and saw a behemoth lying in the grass not far away.
"G-Gu Xi, that cow...!" Qi Xiang instinctively slapped a hand over her mouth, too shocked to speak.
The cow lying in the grass wasn’t black and white, but black and green.
It lay quietly in the tall grass, blending in perfectly with its surroundings as if it were a part of them.
If Gu Xi hadn’t stopped so suddenly, Qi Xiang wouldn’t have even noticed the massive creature lying there!
’Moreover, Qi Xiang had a strange feeling... The other cows in the distance seemed terrified of this green one. Was that why they had deliberately moved to the other side of the lake, just to stay as far away from it as possible?’
Wei Heng moved silently to Gu Xi’s side. "It’s about to evolve," he said in a low voice.
And as everyone knew, the time when a mutated animal evolved was when it was at its most dangerous.
Lu Shiliu’s brow was now furrowed deeply. As a Beast Tamer, he could tell at a glance that something was wrong with this cow.
Setting aside why the cow had suddenly turned green, the evolving Crystal Core inside its body had already cracked and was faintly surrounded by another form of energy...
This was clearly not how a mutated animal was supposed to evolve.
Nearby, Qi Xiang had a very bad feeling.
She stared at the behemoth ahead, swallowing nervously. "Um, it’s not going to go berserk, is it? I heard they often go berserk when they evolve..."
’Someone as useless in a fight as me would definitely just hold everyone back.’
Just as Qi Xiang was wondering if she should make a tactical retreat, the green cow on the ground suddenly lifted its eyelids. The gaze it fixed on them was inexplicably chilling.
Qi Xiang shivered involuntarily.
At that moment, Gu Xi quieted them with a soft sound.
"Shhh—"
Qi Xiang looked up, bewildered, only to see both Lu Shiliu and Wei Heng take a step forward at the same time.
