Chapter 23: The FPA (1)

"We’re here to register a marriage and get some documents completed." Xavier said to the young, wolf beastman at the reception desk. Xavier then leaned over the wooden counter and handed over his plastic ID, adding in a lower tone, "Case WS001. The military department should’ve notified you."

"I’ll check now, General Xavier... One moment please." The wolf beastman answered, giving Freya a bright smile as he took the ID from Xavier.

Freya returned it with a faint one, nerves on edge. She really should’ve taken that offer to go shopping first because it felt awkward wearing this oversized coat.

Xavier, meanwhile, tapped the counter and muttered, "Eyes on the computer, bud."

The wolf beastman turned his head away quickly and began scanning the ID. He then tapped away on the computer for a few moments, handing Xavier back his ID between typing something out and pressing a button on the desk.

Freya turned her attention to the lobby, watching as beastmen came and went. It was more crowded than she thought it would be, a few other beastmen behind the reception desk to help others.

However, what interested her the most was the beastwomen. There were about ten in the lobby and some had animal features, but most looked human to her. What gave most away were their eyes.

Some gave her curious glances, but much to Freya’s relief, most were busy in their own worlds and didn’t have time to give her much attention.

"Ah! Found it." The wolf beastman suddenly declared, making Freya look over at him. "You can go straight to the third floor... Here you are..."

He handed over some kind of keycard which Xavier took. The two then headed back into the elevator and Xavier placed the keycard into a slot under the elevator’s button.

It beeped for a second before the elevator moved, taking them to the third floor. When the doors finally opened once more, Freya found herself stepping into another lobby, smaller than the one she’d been to.

A rabbit beastman wearing a lab coat walked over to them and asked, "Case WS001?"

"That’s us..." Xavier nodded his head.

"Doctor Lavs." The rabbit beastman answered. He then turned to Freya and said, "We’re going to complete your registration form and then you can sign that marriage certificate... If you don’t mind, could you come with me?"

"Sure." Freya nodded her head, wondering what else they needed. Did she not fill out everything at the military department?

Xavier moved to one of the nearby chairs and sat down. "Yell if you need anything."

She furrowed her eyebrows at his words, shaking her head as she followed Doctor Lavs. The man took her to a nearby private room with a table on the one side and a bunch of equipment and machinery on the other.

"We’ll need to scan your face and hands to add them to the system." Doctor Lavs explained, moving to one of the machines. "Also test for any abilities and give a basic wellness check. A proper health check will take some time, so you can book in at your convenience with the receptionist outside."

"I see..." Freya mused.

The doctor then motioned for her to step in front of the machine and she did so. They did a quick health check, mostly to make sure she wasn’t sick or had any physical problems.

Once that was done, Doctor Lavs had her in front of a scanning device. It scanned her face, doing a close up of both of her eyes for a retinal scan too. They then moved to fingerprints, it almost feeling like she was getting her ID done.

The only difference was Doctor Lavs was nice and trying to be friendly, asking her all sorts of questions. Some were clearly for the registration stuff, but others were just pleasantries.

Eventually, they came to a big black ball in the center of some equipment. Doctor Lavs directed her to stand in front of the black ball. He then moved to a nearby tablet on the machine.

"This will rate your abilities." Doctor Lavs explained. "I heard you had a guide ability correct?"

"That’s right." Freya answered.

"Alright then... Please place your hand on the ball." Doctor Lavs instructed. "It may send a tingling sensation through your hand, but it’ll only be for a moment."

Freya did as she was told, the black ball feeling cold to touch under her right hand. However, as soon as Doctor Lavs switched the machine, a weird sensation shot up her arm. She gritted her teeth, feeling something move in her arm.

The doctor quickly switched the machine off and Freya pulled her hand away, never wanting to experience that situation again. It was like hundreds of ants were crawling all over her arm.

"Sorry about that..." Doctor Lavs apologized as he gestured to a nearby chair. "But that’s all the physical tests for today. Thank you for cooperating."

"Um... no problem." Freya murmured, gazing at her right hand for a moment before taking a seat. "What was the score?"

"S-class rank." Doctor Lavs answered as he took a seat across from her.

Freya let out a curse. That was undoubtedly a high rank, if not the highest ranking for guides and she just had to have it. That god sure did enjoy making her life hard. A lower rank would’ve been much better.

Then she could lay low.

"Now, to some other business..." Doctor Lavs said, bringing her attention back to him. "The FPA understands that you’ve already planned to take a partner and while we’re happy about that, we’d like to request that you look into participating in some blind dates.

"We have few S-class guides and many S-class and A-class hunters without a proper partner to help them out. Thus we’d like you to help out with this problem. Of course, we’ll give you time to adjust and even go to the Guide Center to learn more about your abilities."

As he spoke, the doctor slid over a small business card with the Guide Center’s information on it. Freya gave him a tight smile, not at all surprised by his words.

Because this place was nothing more than a way to keep beastwoman on one track.
