Chapter 20: Insults

Two hours later, Freya walked inside the large concrete building with Xavier leading the way. It seemed like your average government building, save for the countless plants hanging around in the main foyer.

There were a couple of chairs placed against the beige walls and the back had a counter with steel bars around the front. A metal door sat to the side.

Behind the counter sat a bored looking beastman with cat ears. He glanced up as Xavier headed straight for the metal door before glancing back down at his phone-like device.

Freya gripped the coat she had borrowed from Xavier tighter, wondering if she should’ve taken up his offer to get proper clothes before coming here. Because now it was feeling all too real.

Xavier, meanwhile, pulled out some kind of plastic ID from his coat pocket and placed it in front of some kind of scanning device. It lit up green and then Xavier placed his hand on the device, glancing up for a second.

Freya copied his action and noticed a tiny red light above the door. Her guess was that it was some kind camera. Perhaps with some facial recognition software in it.

The door suddenly clicked open and Xavier pushed it open for Freya, gesturing for her to enter. She glanced over at the beastman at the counter before she hurried in.

"Is it okay for me to enter like this?" Freya whispered as Xavier followed her.

He placed a hand on the small of her back, gently nudging her to keep walking into the concrete hallway. The place was dimly lit and had several metal doors on either side.

"That beastman knows better than to stop me. Besides, I already let them know we’re coming." Xavier answered in a low tone. "That way all the paperwork is ready for us."

As if he could hear them speaking, which was probably the case considering beastmen hearing, the fox beastman popped up from behind one of the metal doors. He glanced over at them, sending a glare at Xavier.

"You caused quite a stir yesterday with that stunt of yours." The fox beastman muttered, ears flickering as he spoke. He then gave them a small smirk and added, "You’ll be lucky if you keep your job after this."

"Sure..." Xavier stated, brushing straight past the beastman like he was nothing.

Freya kept close to Xavier, not that the snake beastman had let her go, as they made their way into another hallway. The fox beastman followed behind them, but not before he let out a small growl.

"I hope you get stripped of your ranking." The fox beastman continued. "No better fitting than an dishonorable discharge for a vile creature."

Xavier seemed to ignore the beastman as they continued walking, however, Freya could tell his words were beginning to set Xavier off. His jaw was clenched tightly and Freya could feel his fingers stiffen on the small of her back.

"Honestly they should exile the lot of you outside of the city. You and your brothers are nothing more than-" The fox beastman went on.

"Could you shut up?" Freya turned to gaze at the fox beastman. "Your voice is starting to get annoying."

It was risky of her to go insulting a beastman like him, not knowing how he would react. But she had an inkling of what kind of person he was – the kind that was all bark and not bite.

Besides, she’d rather avoid the bloodshed if possible. Xavier seemed to be the more rational of the two brothers she met so far, but Freya wasn’t sure how far that sanity went.

She’d like to get through one day in this world without seeing or getting covered in blood. If that was even possible.

The fox beastman banged his canines at her, letting out a low growl. "You-"

"Watch what you say, Captain Kevin." Another voice spoke out as a metal door hissed open.

Freya turned her head to see a massive, burly man with thick brown hair covering his head and face step out into the hallway. A large scar ran across his milky right eye and down his face, crisscrossing with a few smaller scars.

He seemed to be about middle-aged and wore green pants and a white shirt with a decorated green blazer over the shirt. Basically what she’d expect of a standard military uniform.

"General Markson." Xavier greeted the older beastman. "I didn’t expect to see you here."

The man turned his sharp gaze over to them. "Well, it’s not everyday one of your subordinates causes some chaos at the borders... The king believed it was best that I resolve it myself."

So this city is a monarchy then... Freya mused to herself. Does that mean there are nobles too? Oh gosh... Do I need to learn proper etiquette? Wait, is that fox beastman a noble?! And I just insulted him...

Well, Xavier did also blackmail him yesterday, so maybe she wouldn’t lose her head because she told him his voice was annoying.

"Tsk... Making the general of the army come out for this. It’s a disgrace to have you as a hunter general." Captain Kevin muttered under his breath.

Not that it did much because everyone in the room could hear him well enough. Even Freya who lacked the great beastmen hearing abilities.

"Now now, Captain Kevin." General Markson exclaimed. "That’s not how you address one of your superiors. I could have you punished for that or was yesterday not enough trouble for you."

"Apologies, General Markson." Captain Kevin spat out with gritted teeth. "It was a slip of the tongue."

"Hmm..." General Markson glanced over at Xavier.

To which the snake beastman responded to his unspoken question, "It’s fine."

"You heard him." General Markson stated. "Get back to your duties, Captain, and don’t cause any more problems for me."

It was spoken in such a nice tone, but Freya could practically see the underlying threat. And now they were stuck with this guy, who was clearly the highest ranking among the three.

She just hoped this went quickly and that them ditching yesterday hadn’t caused a bigger mess.

Once the fox beastman was gone, General Markson turned his heel and ordered, "Now come along you two. I’d like to be introduced properly."
