Chapter 83 - 83. Barbecue

It was as if the cave had been covered by a veil, not letting through any noises at all.

Now I could hear a woman screaming, and I followed the sound. Between the dark trees, I was nearly unable to perceive anything and had to proceed with caution.

"DON'T COME HERE!"

"HELP!"

I groped myself forward, finally seeing light from a fire. Navigating was now much easier. Soon I had a good look at what was going on.

There was a woman lying on the ground; she looked horrible, with her clothes shabby, her body filthy, and her hair unwashed for a long time.

She stared in horror in front of her at a man who was covered in blood. He bent down and held something to the fire.

"STOP DON'T COME CLOSER!" The woman screamed hysterically, but the man hadn't even moved away from the fire.

He also just seemed to ignore her.

What the hell?

Time to ask a few questions. I waited until the one minute was over and only conjured up the gun to have it for the full two minutes—the magazines I would only get if they were attacking me. I was far enough away from them to put my magazine in my gun.

I stepped out behind a tree.

"Don't move!." I said loudly to prevent either of them from screaming or moving, as I pointed my gun at them.

The woman screamed regardless when she saw me, and only now did I see that her leg was broken. There were other things around the fireplace as well. A few bottles of water, shoes, and some other tattered clothes.

As if there were many people here, but now, only the two were left behind.

Beside the bloody man was a killed deermonster, and what the bloody man grilled was a rib he had broken off from it.

"Kenny?" The man raised and took a step towards me before hurrying in my direction. To my utter surprise, I recognized Henry's voice, but I was still too paranoid to let my guard down.

"Stop or I will shoot!" I warned, and he creased his steps until he stood. Henry raised his hands.

"Kenny, it's me, Henry; don't you recognize me?" He said it in a clam manner, but his hands trembled.

"Your dog." He emphasized it as if it were some identification.

The woman had stopped screaming and looked between us.

I motioned to her with my head.

"Have you done something to her?"

"No." He slowly shook his head.

"You, why were you screaming as if you were murdered?" I asked the girl.

She just trembled and didn't answer, starting to cry silently.

"She was here with a group; they left her behind when a monster came. That had seemed to scare her." Henry explained.

"When did you descend into the earth hole?" I asked Henry.

"Two or so weeks ago." He said, nearly choking up.

"Come here; I want to touch you." I said and put the gun behind my back, and when it disappeared, I conjured up my kitchen knife.

Henry eagerly came to me before standing in front of me in silence.

I reached my hand out, and he stared at it before putting his hand in mine. I flipped the coin and looked inside his past. It was really 'my' dog. Not some creepy counterpart that looked the same. What I saw from his correct past was how he asked his mole to get him on this expedition.

I sighed in relief and let go of his hand and put my knife in the pocket of my jacket.

"Fine, what the fuck had happened?"

The next thing I knew was that I was crushed in a bloody embrace. I tried to break free, and when that not worked, I at least checked if the knife in my pocket was not unintentionally stabbing him. It was not.

The woman still sobbed, and Henry smelled so metallic that I nearly retched again.

"Finished? Step away; you are full of blood."

"Yes.... I thought you were dead." Henry distanced himself and wiped his face only to make himself more dirty.

"Not even a day had gone by for me; I was in that cave, and came out on the other side." I pointed back.

"Come, sit down." Henry reached out his hand to me, and I scrunched up my face, not taking it.

I went to the fire, and Henry followed me after a few seconds.

"Nobody is gonna hurt you; if he did something to you, either tell me or calm down." I commented to the girl when I passed her.

She really toned down a bit.

Henry had let the sparerib fall, and picked it up again to roast it on the fire.

I watched his actions, along with the light stubble on his face, as well as his body that was from head to toe full of either dry blood or fresh blood.

"What the hell happened?"

Henry pressed his lips together, the fire throwing shadows on his face.

"I blacked out halfway down the hole, when I came to, I was in that cave. I looked for you."

His eyes flitted to me before again wandering to the meat he was grilling. Can't say it didn't smell good, though it was still monster-deer-flesh.

"I was alone, and searched for you, inside the cave, inside the forest. You were nowhere."

"There is a trash world I had already seen before in a vision of the faraway future on the other side of the cave. I think the parallel worlds are lining up in a long row, repeating their pattern in which they surface."

Henry again looked at me before tilting his head.

"You have maybe already figured out how everything worked. And it's just the second portal."

"Have you seen anyone else? Houses, something, or someone from the south district?" I asked him, and he shook his head.

"I was just running around and killing monsters, ; this group was the first I had found." He pointed at the girl.

"You. Are you a doctor or soldier? No, right? A civilian that had survived the earthquake?" She wouldn't be this hysterical if she had received any kind of training...probably.

"Y-yes. C-civilian." She stammered, and when she saw my eyes, she hurriedly looked away.

I sighed heavily, she seemed to recognize me, the orange clothes not doing me any good. Maybe I should get myself all bloody like Henry, I can't even see a bit of orange on him.

"Where are the others? Where did your group come from?" Henry asked her, taking the conversation over.
