Chapter 842: Chapter 842: The Patient Referred by Sun Changhe

(Thanks to Wan Feng Shi Wo De,余wo, and Little Demon God Touch for the monthly ticket encouragement)

Liu Banxia is a man of his word. As promised, he gave the elite ICU team an upgraded meal at noon.

These people weren’t shy around him; they ate what was served. It was like a pre-celebration for Liu Banxia’s "promotion," which was steadily on the way.

In the afternoon, Liu Banxia performed another partial thyroidectomy, which also went smoothly, though the task rewards were a bit meager.

He’s not picky, even though he hopes for more opportunities with level three or four surgeries to complete his job transition task. However, these things aren’t entirely up to him now. With his current status, it’s not appropriate to go around asking for them either.

"Hey, Brother Qiu, why did you come over?"

Back in the hall, Liu Banxia happened to see Qiu Huaili and quickly went to greet him.

"Just came over to check on Rou. After all, she came to my turf; not a big deal. How long will she need to stay in the hospital?" Qiu Huaili asked with a smile.

"Probably need another week of medication. The current results are good. We’ll check again tomorrow, and then we can adjust the dosage," Liu Banxia replied.

"Basically, there shouldn’t be any issues. Once her body is adjusted and her recovery is on track, I think in less than six months, she’ll be a healthy young girl again."

"I’m a bit worried, Old Bao mentioned again today about how we should thank you," Qiu Huaili said.

"Just buying some fruit will do. That’s about the limit of what’s acceptable. I’m still waiting for the hospital’s voting meeting. Anything more expensive tends to spark jealousy," Liu Banxia hurriedly replied.

"I know you wealthy folks can be capricious, but we’re quite timid and can’t keep up with your games. Please don’t surprise me with anything; it might turn into a shock."

Qiu Huaili nodded, aware of the "risks" involved in Liu Banxia’s work.

Back when someone helped save money, it got posted online as receiving bribes. Now is a crucial period; he really can’t risk causing trouble for Liu Banxia.

Qiu Huaili didn’t stay long, knowing how busy Liu Banxia was. He came to ask as a courtesy and to assure Bao Chunlai that his request was dealt with immediately.

Liu Banxia, by now, was used to handling these situations easily. After all, Qiu Huaili wasn’t an outsider, so he could be straightforward.

In reality, that’s how it is. He accepted the fruit Liu Haibing bought, so why fuss over one more? Anyone making an issue of it would spark public outrage.

As he was tidying up case files, his phone rang.

"Ah, Assistant Sun, what brings you to call someone as busy as me?" Liu Banxia asked with a laugh after picking up.

"You’re definitely busier than I am. Just finished surgery? If you have time, come over to my office," Sun Changhe said.

"Sure thing, I was just planning to seek your guidance. Let me wrap up things here first." Liu Banxia replied quickly.

"Alright, I’ll be waiting in my office," Sun Changhe said and hung up the phone.

"Who was that? You seem quite excited. Have the selections been made already?" Shi Lei asked curiously.

Liu Banxia shook his head, "It was a call from our Assistant Sun. Maybe he’s got insider news. I’ll scout it out first, and call me if anything comes up."

"Hurry up, it’s quite a critical time," Shi Lei nodded.

Assistant Sun, or Sun Changhe, is practically Chen Zhenxing’s right-hand man. Him calling Liu Banxia directly probably means something’s up.

Given Sun Changhe’s special position, even though Liu Banxia also has indirect ties with Chen Zhenxing, he certainly can’t compare to the closeness with Sun Changhe.

"Assistant Sun, what’s the situation? Any news?" In Sun Changhe’s office, Liu Banxia didn’t beat around the bush.

"Why the rush? Your situation shouldn’t have any hitch," Sun Changhe said with a smile.

"The past couple of days, I’ve been gathering impressions from the directors across departments. They all have a good opinion of you. Relax, there should be no issue. Do you think you’ll add a dish for me too?"

"That’s definitely not a problem. This call is timely, as I just finished a surgery not long ago," Liu Banxia said.

"I know you’re quick with surgeries, I called right on schedule," Sun Changhe replied.

"Here’s the thing, an old classmate from my graduate days, has been diagnosed with liver cancer. Think you can operate on him?"

"Wow, Brother Sun, you’ve got to let me assess the situation first," Liu Banxia replied with a wry smile.

"It’s stage two. He underwent a laparoscopic exploration, and there are significant adhesions," Sun Changhe said, handing over the CT scans.

"Tsk tsk, judging by this, calling it stage two is a bit of a stretch, even saying stage three wouldn’t be wrong. And there’s a hepatic artery aneurysm? That’s really dangerous," Liu Banxia remarked upon seeing the scans.

"Sigh... I don’t even know what to say to him. He loves drinking, and he’s a doctor himself, yet he doesn’t take care of his own health," Sun Changhe said.

"Originally, I planned to ask Chief Director Zhou, but he has been too busy lately. The situation can’t be delayed much longer, so I thought of you."

"By the way, he also has some high blood pressure. The sooner the surgery, the better. Anyway, I think you are the best person for the job. So, how about it, do you have confidence?"

"Brother Sun, we’re not outsiders, so I’ll be honest with you," Liu Banxia said while reviewing other examination reports of the patient.

"This surgery can be performed, but it’s somewhat challenging. The tumor is quite large and has adhesions; the aneurysm also needs to be addressed, which will definitely take a long time. Coupled with his high blood pressure, it’s really not ideal to operate now."

"Have his coronary arteries been checked? Could there be complications in that area? These adhesions are so severe, it’s possible there might already be lymph node metastasis."

Sun Changhe nodded, "I have concerns about that too. However, you performed a similar surgery successfully last time. Even though there’s an aneurysm this time, it doesn’t seem very dangerous. Plus, you should have accumulated a lot of experience from your last surgery in this area, right?"

"Don’t try to fool me; I know your surgical skill level. Any surgery you’ve performed maintains a consistently high standard."

"Sigh... We have to do it eventually. Just bring him over first," Liu Banxia sighed.

"The adhesions are really severe. Even if I perform it, it would take over seven hours. And I feel like it has already metastasized to the lymph nodes."

"And for him, dealing with the aneurysm alone would take a lot of time. I certainly can’t do it by myself; I’ll need Shi Lei or Wei Yuan to assist me. The interns are still too inexperienced to handle such complex situations."

This was a request from Sun Changhe, and it was really hard for him to refuse.

Moreover, for him, there was no reason to refuse. Whether or not they were friends of Sun Changhe, if they actually came to the emergency center for a consultation, he would still take it.

However, because of Sun Changhe, the standard for this surgery needed to be set higher, which did add some pressure.

Otherwise, if mistakes were made during the surgery, the patient’s family might not say anything, but they would definitely think in their hearts that they entrusted it to the wrong person.

Sun Changhe was quite pleased, "Then I’ll leave it to you. I really can’t think of anyone else. Try to shorten the surgery time as much as possible, and give it all you’ve got."

"Don’t just count on me; we also need to see the pre-surgery test results. This surgery could easily start in the morning and end by dinnertime," Liu Banxia said.

"But still, have him come over for a comprehensive check-up soon; it really can’t be delayed. As for the surgery room, I’ll talk to Wang Lei to make sure we can squeeze this surgery in."

"Banxia, no need for formalities, he can come tomorrow," Sun Changhe said.

"That’s no problem; I have a low rectal cancer surgery preserving the anus tomorrow. After his check-up, the earliest he can be operated on is the day after tomorrow or the day after that," Liu Banxia said.

"I guess he has made some adjustments at home these last couple of days, so for the surgery to be quicker, we should go for an open procedure. Even though it can be done laparoscopically, I can’t operate with Shi Lei that way."

"It’s not an issue; for him, removing this tumor and tying off that aneurysm is better than anything else."

"Alright, let’s leave it at that. If I’m in the surgery room when he arrives tomorrow, please help arrange for his tests. Shi Lei was supposed to rest afterward, but I’ll have him switch a day."

Sun Changhe nodded, acknowledging the favor Liu Banxia was doing him.

For such a surgery, it’s not something that can be done just because you want to. Otherwise, the surgery room would be in disarray, wouldn’t it?

Even though he was confident that he could have the anesthesia department do him a favor by adding another surgery, it’s not just one anesthesiologist participating—there are so many people involved.

Without overthinking it too much, Liu Banxia took on this high-difficulty task and even swept up the rest of the work too, giving quite a substantial favor.

On the way back to the emergency center, Liu Banxia was mulling over the case. It’s not something easily manageable; he needs to see if blocking the hepatic artery will affect blood flow to properly handle this aneurysm.

If it does have an effect, they would need to perform a bypass graft, which would undoubtedly add a lot of surgery time.

"What’s up? Why do you still have that expression?" Shi Lei curiously asked after seeing Liu Banxia.

"Sigh, Assistant Sun pushed a case onto me; I need your help," Liu Banxia said.

Then he briefed him on the patient’s general condition. Even without the scans, Shi Lei could imagine how challenging this surgery would be.

"How about it? Can you do it together?" Liu Banxia asked.

"Let’s give it a try; what else can we do? Have the tests done tomorrow and see if we can operate the day after, then I’ll decide whether or not to take a day off," Shi Lei said.

He was helpless, yet there was a hint of excitement.

He liked the challenge of surgeries with a certain level of difficulty, and this surgery would certainly be challenging.
