Chapter 441: 441. Attorney vs. State Attorney

Henry’s POV

Ethan’s smile didn’t falter.

"Why would he be here? He is still in the city, tirelessly hunting for the safety of the people." That was it; he did not further elaborate.

I looked at the state attorney, making a note to ask Ethan for that man’s first name later so that I could teleport to him at any point, for example, if I had to get rid of some aggression.

"How admirable! How about Mr. Devin? Did he come? He was mentioned in the deal as well, wasn’t he?" The state attorney let his eyes wander over everyone present again.

I chuckled internally.

"I apologize," Ethan said, motioning to the shelves as if he were inviting the newcomers to get ready to work.

"Should we start to address the initial reason we are here?"

Neither the state attorney nor the military people moved; the ones in white coats did neither.

As if they waited for the ’go’ from the hyena-like glasses person.

"How about these cameras?" The man in question pointed at them with an eerie smile.

"With so many important individuals present today, we naturally have to guarantee everyone’s safety." Ethan slightly bowed, as if to display the enormous respect he surely didn’t feel.

"Still so slick, Mr. Hendricks," the state attorney laughed.

Judge Kroh stood up, entering the conversation.

"Still so wordy."

"Judge Kroh! How is the retirement?" The state attorney looked at the old man and walked to him to shake hands, looking as if he had just noticed the judge’s presence.

"A quiet and efficient time," the old man answered.

"I bet it is. I bet it is." The state attorney looked at Mrs. Howard while still shaking Judge Kroh’s hand.

"And this lady must be—"

"Are we here for a gathering? Am I your friend? I don’t care about you! GET TO WORK!" Mrs. Howard raised her voice.

The state attorney froze for a second before he laughed and let go of Judge Kroh and motioned to the white coats to go to the shelves, and only then did they cross the empty space to do their job.

I could feel the eyes of the woman from the Lawrence family on me as they passed us black-dressed security people, though it was just fleeting as she seemed to scan the other people.

The military men remained at the warehouse door, as if they were guarding it, unclear if from possible danger from the outside or to hinder anyone from leaving.

I exchanged a look with one of the cameras on the ceiling, feeling Kenny’s eyes on me, but maybe it was just my imagination.

If they tried to play tricks, I would have no choice but to kill them all, and I am sure I would get praise from my master for saving the day.

When the white coats approached the first shelf and pulled the plastic containers out, they were shocked. I could hear their motions even without turning around, and I heard them whisper in disbelief.

"Are all these shelves really full of rat corpses?"

"How did he do it?"

"It explains the smell..."

"Is that even possible for a human to achieve?"

’No,’ I smiled under my mask, ’it wouldn’t be manageable for a simple human.’

The state attorney continued to speak to Ethan while ignoring the old judge.

He stood in the middle of the room like he owned the place.

"What is your opinion of the pink human monsters? Did you notice them leaving the city in a frenzy? I think..." He pointed in the direction we had come here from.

"They ran there before they suddenly ..." He shrugged, his movements seeming a bit erratic.

" disappeared."

He talked about the zombies.

"How could we not notice pink humanoid monsters speeding through the city? It was frightening," Ethan answered, and I applauded.

He was insinuating that our home was inside the city.

The state attorney pursed his lips before he smirked. He pushed his glasses up while looking at the floor before again meeting Ethan’s eyes.

"And not long before the humanoids left the city, the rats had, just that they took off in the opposite direction." He pointed with two fingers at the end of his outstretched arm in the direction of the center.

"Interesting, isn’t it? And there were roadblocks along the way."

Ethan smiled politely, also pushing his glasses up while looking down a moment before gazing back up.

"How curious."

I could hear the white coats continue whispering while counting; this would take more than a few hours if they continued at that speed.

The state attorney was met with further silence from all parties, and his face fell as if he didn’t need to know how to smile in the first place.

"We have witnesses of Kennith Howard dragging a fellow participant of the center program away. This fellow participant had then gone missing, and so did Dr. Thompson. Not only that, but a fire broke out in the house of the assistant of Dr. Thompson not long after. A few other people that worked in the center disappeared as well."

HA!

Clearly, this man wished to die?!

"State Attorney Bonwick. These are serious accusations. To where had Kennith Howard allegedly dragged the fellow participant, and why had nobody interfered in this alleged kidnapping? Why had there been no charges until now, and why have we never heard of this?" Ethan’s tone showed what seemed to be genuine appall.

"Oh, that is because we have investigated this matter until now." The state attorney’s expression again showed delight.

Ethan nodded, showing relief.

"And what are the results? Surely, you have found the REAL culprit meanwhile?"

The man with the frameless glasses fell silent, his face crumbled again.

I grinned. We really had the right man on our side.

Because I was concentrating on my hearing, I could hear two cars closing in before anyone else, with about eight people overall.

It wasn’t that this number would make any big difference, so I didn’t alert anyone; yet the moment the others were able to pick up the sound, the state attorney clearly regained his good mood.

"I just wanted to let you know, if any of the people present today disappear after I disclosed the investigation of Mr. Howard, the culprit will be evident. Many people are informed and working on Mr. Howard’s case; I hope you understand what I am saying."

My heart skipped a beat, and I felt so angry that I wanted to rip that man apart right this instant.

HOW DARE HE TRY TO PULL ON MY LEASH?

Did he think I could only make him disappear?

He could also die in a tragic, TRAGIC accident, and hell, I GUARANTEE that he will.

"Please don’t say such frightening things on a day of celebration! We are all so happy that Mr. Howard and Mr. Devin are regaining their freedom again."

Mhm, good job. I calmed down considerably; Ethan just insinuated that if this deal went over successfully, nobody had to fear a sudden death or disappearance.

And seeing the state attorney’s expression, he seemed to have gotten the message.

However, whatever promises Ethan made, I was not obliged to stick to them.

Even after the two cars arrived, some time went by before the people appeared on the path to the warehouse.

My eyes instantly darted to the man pushed over the lawn in a wheelchair; his blue eye color had become much more intense, he had an oxygen mask on his face, and he seemed much more emaciated since the last time I had seen him.

The last time, I had killed him.

Eugine Lawrence Junior, how interesting of him to show up here if he still looked half-dead, though not comparable to the corpse I had acidified into nothingness.

The state attorney instantly went to the wheelchair, bowing and greeting Mr. Lawrence, who weakly nodded, letting his hollow but piercing teal eyes wander over the people present as he was wheeled inside.

I had to hold myself back from laughing out loud; the state attorney couldn’t show more clearly on which side he was.

Mrs. Howard sprang from her seat, bellowing,

"WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?"

Surprised, I looked at the other people who came with Mr. Lawrence; most of them wore what looked like fencing masks. The only other unmasked person was the man pushing Mr. Lawrence.

"I WANT TO ASK THE SAME! WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU ARE DOING HERE???" the man roared back, and that was the moment I recognized him.

Mr. Howard, not with his usual stern expression that I knew him with, had his face red from anger.

Kenny’s father.

Kenny’s abuser.

The reason for Kenny’s horrible childhood.

My body moved by itself, and I took a step forward, ready to instantly kill him, when the phone in my pocket vibrated.

I let go of a breath I had been holding and checked my phone while stepping back in line.

Because the attention wasn’t on me but on Mrs. Howard, who yelled back at her son, nobody saw my reaction nor what I was doing.

Nobody but my god, watching over me.

Kenny <3 <3 <3 <3: [nn]

He seemed to have randomly sent something to stop me first, the next message followed soon after:

Kenny <3 <3 <3 <3: [STOP! Be a good puppy and stand back until you hear me saying otherwise.]

Okay.

I am a good puppy, so naturally, I am obedient to my master.
