Chapter 353: 353. Come Home-Sped up (by Jace June)

"BAHAHAHAHAH!" I broke out laughing, finding this the absolute most befitting way to send the commander home—though Henry couldn’t have known if he was kicking him back to his family or into the arms of monsters.

Danny giggled with me, and I didn’t hear Henry laugh, but I could feel him chuckle on my back.

Pfft, he still had to be weak, given how bad he looked before, but it’s good to know that he was able to use his strength for what’s important.

The portal wavered somewhat before it closed shut.

I didn’t see it, but I could imagine the fine lines, the wings closing back up to cover what needed to be protected.

Also interesting, because that never happened with the giant; he had to close the portals himself, though I don’t know about the time after he lost his mind and just ripped portals open—maybe a few of them closed themselves as well.

I looked at Jeyjey, who had a nosebleed and seemed to wake up much sooner than one DMT trip should last. Her whole posture changed, her shoulders sank, and she leaned over, starting to cry.

I don’t know what’s going on; maybe she feels bodily weak, or getting down from a DMT trip isn’t as nice as being on one.

"...?" Ethan turned back to me, motioning to the portal, as if he was asking if this was really okay.

"Don’t worry; the portal leads directly into the commander’s mansion." I think I saw one or two wedding pictures hanging in that corridor, and at the end I got a look into a spacious living room downstairs.

"That’s practical." Ethan nodded, meanwhile ignoring Jeyjey’s breakdown, as did everybody else.

"Let’s go!" My grandmother rammed her stick in the earth to make a point that got lost because her move made no sound before she walked to the biggest tent.

Ethan followed my grandma and picked Jeyjey up on the way; the guys walked after them, and I waited in my spot until Omar came over.

"Do you want to look for your great uncle and grandpa amidst the corpses? To bury them or something?"

"He hates them!" Danny answered before Omar could.

The latter smiled mockingly while repositioning Henrietta on his other shoulder.

"The two of them have made my mother’s life hell."

Well, I hadn’t heard about that.

"And I already looked around; I didn’t find them." Omar shrugged and went to the tent, with me following behind.

Hmm, maybe they made it out before everything went to hell. It would make sense; after all, who would evacuate first?

The ’important’ people. Maybe my rescue team and the fleeing Lawrence heads had missed each other.

I looked around to see if I could identify some of the clients as corpses, and I only really found the old woman and about two of the men.

So the others could either have made it out and directly fled the military warehouse to let the cannon fodder do the rest, or they were in one of the destroyed tents.

The third option was they would have been smashed beyond recognition because I spotted a few flesh balls of unknown origin.

Anyway, who the fuck cares? It would be best if they had turned into flesh balls because flesh balls would usually keep their mouths shut.

"What about the survivor you found that told you about the Bone Dragon?" I asked Danny, who trotted beside me as we entered the big tent full of people.

"Ah!" He looked at me and pointed at my eyes, as if he was asking if I had a vision, and I nodded without explaining further.

"She accidentally died when shot by my gun." Danny shrugged and smiled at me sheepishly.

....

Well... it was best not to leave behind witnesses that could identify my friends, especially if the witness was a VIP client with power and influence on their side.

It was also good for Danny to be able to kill if necessary because in this new era, it would be his ticket to survival.

The way he was wording it, however... I will have to flip the coin on him to find out more about that, but not now.

"Ah." I nodded as we entered the tent, and seeing everyone still on this side, I found the portal in the middle of the room.

"It’s not working?" I asked while staring at the distorted air in the middle of the tent that indicated otherwise.

My grandma looked at me furiously and grabbed my arm to drag me inside the portal, and the next moment I stood on the underground floor of the military warehouse.

I spotted the staff sergeant, who wiped sweat from his forehead, seeing my grandma return as he sat in front of a massive computer on top of some electronic hardware that was connected to the metal doorframe.

"You think we are crossing first after all the effort it took to find you?" My grandmother scoffed and moved me to the side.

Slowly, everyone followed: Ethan with Jeyjey, Omar with Henrietta, Jordan with the kid, the staff sergeant, and then Kitty, who came to my grandma’s side, and that was everyone.

"Everything ready?" My grandma turned to Jordan, who nodded.

"We prepared everything while we waited for you."

"Let’s go to the car."

I cluelessly looked at them before I glanced at the portal and computer.

"We have to destroy that stuff."

My grandmother smacked my forehead, luckily with her hand and not her stick, again holding my arm in an iron grip and dragging me to the big elevator that provided enough space for everyone, even the tiger.

Only some funky elevator music was missing.

The elevator came to a stop, and I was dragged outside.

Simple building, industrial style like the warehouse, and when I stepped outside, I let out a long breath.

It was night here, and the stars seemed to shine unbelievably bright.

However, the air smelled foreign now that I wasn’t inside the tiger and distracted by a million different smells.

It smelled like chemicals.

My grandmother jerked me to her, and finally, we arrived at a black car, not the green one she came with.

She opened the trunk like she had done for Kitty, and I saw her eyes looking at me impatiently.

.....

"Fine." I sighed and stepped to the trunk to first put Henry in before I got inside myself.

When I didn’t place myself in the little space fast enough, my grandmother randomly stabbed me with her stick until I was in place for her to shut the trunk.

I tried to protect important places with my hands, only for my grandmother to scoff insultingly and finally go away.

"Ow!" I whispered, and Henry instantly pulled me to him to cuddle me.

"How are you?" I asked him quietly to not uncover the hidden load we currently posed as.

"Weak. You must continue to carry me." Henry whispered back while burrowing his nose in my neck and inhaling creepily.

"We are home again." I said while I looked up sideways at the rear windshield.

"Mhm. How do you feel about that?"

"Don’t know." I am fucking hungry.

"Did you hear about the rats?" I asked him.

"Yes." He again chose my neck as his personal pacifier.

About half an hour later, the car started.

"Everything is going down; this is really the fucking apocalypse." Natural disasters were nothing foreign, monsters in other worlds were something acceptable, but monsters in our world... it’s somehow more real than before.

"Yes, haha! I told you." Henry chuckled with delight while I thought of Danny telling me with a grin that he accidentally killed someone.

Everything is so fucked up it’s mind-blowing.

We heard a loud explosion, and when I looked up to the windshield again, I saw a massive fire not far away, as if a bomb had exploded.

Then there were shots, as if ammunition were burning and exploding as well. 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺

As if a fucking military warehouse was blasted to pieces.

We also heard the shrill laughter of a crazy old woman in the front of the car, with Henry soon chiming in.

"BAHAHAHA! Fine! Bring it on!" I snickered, feeling that certain anticipation returning.

Apocalypse at home it is, then.
