Flash Marriage With Mr. Sheffield: Go Away, Cheap Man!-Chapter 129: Resignation
After Thea Tate left, they began to eat.
Silas Sheffield ordered the food that Clara Sterling loves, and they had four dishes and one soup.
After the meal.
"The company anniversary celebration is coming up in a couple of days," Silas Sheffield said.
Clara Sterling nodded, "Yeah, I know. It’s on the 30th."
"The dress has already been delivered to your home. Try it on tonight."
"A dress?" Clara Sterling’s eyes showed confusion, "Do I need to wear a dress to the anniversary celebration?"
"Yes."
But she learned from her colleagues that the company’s anniversary celebration wasn’t in the form of a business cocktail party, but more like an ordinary company annual meeting, with a banquet at a hotel where employees can bring their families.
For such an occasion, wearing casual clothes was fine, there was no need to dress up so formally in an evening gown.
Clara Sterling expressed her confusion.
Silas Sheffield explained calmly, "I want to reveal your identity as the president’s wife that day."
"What?" Silas Sheffield’s words caught Clara Sterling off guard.
After the shock, Clara Sterling frowned slightly, "I still have to work at the company. It’s not good to reveal it like this, is it?"
Silas Sheffield explained calmly, "You are now Mr. Cheney’s protégé. If you continue to stay in the assistant position, there’s not much growth for you. You can resign from the company and focus on research with Mr. Cheney."
Hearing this, Clara Sterling’s confusion disappeared.
Silas Sheffield was quite right.
Now that she’s Mr. Cheney’s protégé, she still needs to learn a lot before diving into research with him. Continuing as an assistant wouldn’t leave her with enough time and energy.
"Alright then, I’ll resign after the anniversary celebration."
Silas Sheffield responded calmly, "You don’t need to wait until the celebration is over. You can resign and hand over your work in the next couple of days."
"So soon?"
"Yes, as soon as possible."
"Okay."
Clara Sterling didn’t ask why, as there were only five days left until the company’s anniversary celebration anyway.
Resigning early would allow more time to review the books Mr. Cheney gave her.
"Well, if there’s nothing else, I’ll head out," Clara Sterling said.
"Alright."
Clara Sterling gently opened the door to the president’s office a crack, and peeked outside.
Silas Sheffield was amused by her actions.
The man leaned on the sofa, leisurely watching her, with a playful smile on his lips.
"Are you that afraid?" Silas Sheffield chuckled, "It really looks like an affair."
"After all, it’s not public yet," Clara Sterling muttered softly, only relaxing after seeing no one was outside.
This was lunchtime, so everyone was probably downstairs eating in the cafeteria.
Clara Sterling was relieved, opened the door, and walked out.
But after only a few steps, she ran into someone head-on.
Clara Sterling’s heart jumped to her throat, nervous to the point that her breathing lost its rhythm.
The person raised their head.
It was a familiar face.
"Madam," Assistant Carver had just come from near the restroom, and upon seeing Clara Sterling, she paused and greeted her with a smile.
Thankfully, it was just Assistant Carver.
Clara Sterling let out a slow breath.
That scared the life out of her.
"Assistant Carver," Clara Sterling also greeted with a smile.
After the greeting, she quickly walked to the elevator and pressed the button.
Fortunately, aside from Lindsay Carver, she didn’t encounter anyone else.
Clara Sterling returned to her seat and sat there for a while.
Lisa Holloway and Anabelle Spencer came by together after lunch.
Anabelle Spencer saw Clara Sterling and asked her, "Clara, where did you go just now?"
Clara Sterling replied, "A friend came to see me, and I had lunch with him."
"Oh." Anabelle Spencer didn’t suspect anything.
But Lisa Holloway gave Clara Sterling a mischievous look.
After lunch, everyone opened their folding beds to take a nap.
Lisa Holloway’s folding bed was next to Clara Sterling’s. She leaned over and whispered, "Did you have lunch with your husband?"
Clara Sterling quietly hummed in response.
"In his office?"
"Yes."
"Office romance, how exciting," Lisa Holloway said with excitement, whispering, "Tell me about your love story? It’s just like those CEO romance novels I read."
"Let’s sleep first. We can talk about it on the phone after work."
"Alright, good afternoon."
...
In the afternoon, close to the end of the workday, Clara Sterling knocked on Julian Hawthorne’s office door.
"Knock knock knock—"
"Come in."
Clara Sterling pushed the door open and walked in.
"President Hawthorne."
Julian Hawthorne looked up, his refined face was warm and gentle.
"What’s the matter?"
"I..." Clara Sterling took a few steps forward, "I’m here to resign."
"Resign?" Julian Hawthorne visibly froze.
"Yes."
"Didn’t you say you’d resign at the end of June?"
Clara Sterling had previously mentioned to Julian Hawthorne that she planned to go to graduate school and would resign at the end of June.
Clara Sterling replied, "The situation has changed."
"Why?"
"For personal reasons," Clara Sterling said vaguely.
Julian Hawthorne paused, his attractive brows furrowing slightly, "Is it because of me?"
"Not at all." Clara Sterling quickly waved her hand, "It’s for personal reasons, nothing to do with you."
Clara Sterling said offhandedly, "I fear starting prep too late, so I want to start preparing for grad school a month early."
"Is that so..."
Julian Hawthorne seemed not to believe this reason.
During their interactions, he was well aware of Clara Sterling’s capabilities.
He had seen her resume too, very impressive, a top graduate from a leading domestic university with many awards during her studies.
He lowered his gaze to conceal the fleeting trace of melancholy in his eyes.
Clara Sterling pressed her lips together. "President Hawthorne, I know leaving suddenly will disrupt your work arrangements, but my situation is somewhat special and I have to propose resigning."
Julian Hawthorne didn’t speak, and it was unclear what he was thinking.
Clara Sterling waited for a while, but Julian Hawthorne neither agreed nor disagreed.
Finding it hard to gauge his thoughts, Clara Sterling said, "President Hawthorne, then... I’ll go draft my resignation letter."
Julian Hawthorne made an indiscernible "hmm" sound.
Clara Sterling returned to her seat and started writing her resignation letter on the computer.
After writing it, she printed it out, signed it, and went to Julian Hawthorne’s office to get his signature.
Julian Hawthorne glanced at the resignation letter, said nothing, and signed it decisively.
"Thank you, President Hawthorne."
Julian Hawthorne is her immediate supervisor, and resigning only required his signature.
Clara Sterling took the resignation letter to the department administration for filing.
Sarah Cheney was surprised to see the resignation letter.
"You’re resigning?"
"Yes," Clara Sterling said with an indifferent expression.
"Is it because of President Hawthorne? You and he..." Sarah Cheney trailed off.
"No, I’m resigning because I have my own plans, unrelated to anyone else."
"Alright then." Sarah Cheney said, "Come with me to the HR department."
Clara Sterling followed the necessary procedures, then returned to her seat to hand over work to Anabelle Spencer and Lisa Holloway.
