Chapter 784: 783 That Glance

Outside the door, besides Mo Xiuchen, there was also Qin Mu.

Wen Ran was surprised to find that as soon as Mo Xiuchen saw her open the door, he asked, “Ranran, is he your boyfriend?”

And Qin Mu, after hearing Mo Xiuchen’s words, a flash of realization passed through his eyes. No wonder this guy had such a sharp and frosty look when he saw him earlier. Turns out, he saw him as a love rival.

What was it about this man? He was the one with memory loss, wasn’t he? Why did he harbor hostility towards him?

As Qin Mu mulled over this, Wen Ran glanced at Mo Xiuchen, then at Qin Mu, unsure of what to reply. Mo Xiuchen, however, unceremoniously walked into the room, brought the breakfast he was holding to the dining table, and set it down.

Wen Ran, taken aback, turned to look at Mo Xiuchen.

...

After he’d set down the breakfast, he scanned the living room with his gaze before squinting, a hint of confusion creeping into his eyes. He turned to Wen Ran, who was still standing at the doorway, and asked, “Ranran, can I explore your home?”

Wen Ran opened her mouth to say something, but said nothing for she didn’t need to. Without waiting for her consent, Mo Xiuchen had already begun to explore her home.

Outside, Qin Mu squinted his eyes and withdrew his gaze from Mo Xiuchen. Turning to Wen Ran, he said, “Ranran, I’ll head to the office first. Take the day to rest.”

When he was heading downstairs earlier, he saw Mo Xiuchen standing at Wen Ran’s door. He greeted him casually, unaware that the look he received from Mo Xiuchen had a touch of hostility.

Qin Mu thought it was better for him to make himself scarce, in case Mo Xiuchen decided to seek ‘revenge’ once his memory returned.

Before Wen Ran could respond, he turned around and left.

Standing at the door, Wen Ran watched as Mo Xiuchen explored every corner of her home, including her bedroom and kitchen. She felt a mix of anticipation and worry.

She hoped that he would remember something, yet was also afraid of what he might recall.

This internal conflict was growing stronger by the day.

“Ranran, why are you just standing there? Your breakfast will get cold.”

Like a true housekeeper, Mo Xiuchen called for Wen Ran, then promptly walked up to her, lightly pulled her inside, and closed the door.

Wen Ran furrowed her brows, about to say something, when she heard Mo Xiuchen say, “Why does your home feel so familiar to me? Ranran, did I know you in the past?”

Upon hearing his words, Wren Ran’s eyes widened in surprise. Looking into his probing, deep gaze, she felt her heart quicken. To escape his penetrating gaze, she headed towards the dining room.

Mo Xiuchen followed her in silence. He didn’t need her to answer his question; he had his answer already.

A genuine smile graced his lips, his mouth curving upwards in pleasure.

“Ranran, I didn’t know what you liked to eat, so I just bought dumplings, soy milk, and some porridge.”

Mo Xiuchen walked to the kitchen, gathered the bowl and chopsticks, sat down in a chair, gave Wen Ran a pair of chopsticks, and placed some dumplings on a dish.

He efficiently prepared everything and asked with a smile, “Ranran, will you try it and see if it’s good?”

Wen Ran smiled at him, picked up a dumpling, and gently took a bite. She looked up to see Mo Xiuchen watching her intently.

Her gaze hesitated for a moment before lowering her eyes. She calmly asked, “Why aren’t you eating?”

“Ranran.”

Mo Xiuchen’s lips lifted into a tender smile, sitting upright in front of her. He looked so close yet so gentle, Wen Ran felt as if she was dreaming.

His soft calling of ‘Ranran’ was so sweet that she found it hard to remain calm in front of him.

She didn’t want to meet his gaze, but the draw of his charm was too strong to resist. It felt as though his deep eyes were pulling her in.

Then, she heard him ask, “Do you remember when you first saw me?”

A little flustered, Wen Ran simply said, “On the streets of D Country. You recognized me because you saw my brother.”

“No.”

The denial from Mo Xiuchen left Wen Ran stunned.

Seeing the confusion and surprise on her face, a smile of delight spread across Mo Xiuchen’s lips. He pushed the bowl of porridge towards her, explaining gently, “The first time I saw you was when I was on my way to the airport. You were sitting in a cafe with a friend. You were so absorbed in your phone. For some reason, I remembered you the moment I saw you.”

His words faltered towards the end, his lips curving into a gentle, yet puzzled smile – one that he himself didn’t understand.

In a vast sea of people, why was it her that caught his eye? And why did her image remain etched in his heart?

In the days following his return to D Country, her face, touched with a hint of sadness, kept appearing in his mind. The previous night, when he had a glimpse of the snapshot on her phone, a thought struck him.

Could it be, he wondered, the photo Ranran was so engrossed in that day – was it his?

If they had been close before, the days while he had amnesia and was dating another woman must have been hard and lonely for her.

Thinking about it, he felt a pang of ache.

That feeling of unbearable sadness for the one you loved, was so distinct that he couldn’t ignore it. Lying in the hotel bed, he thought about Wen Ran, tried to recall the past but unfortunately, his mind was still a blank canvas.

Earlier, while he was waiting for her outside the door, he saw Qin Mu coming from upstairs. He instinctively thought he was here to find Wen Ran. When Qin Mu saw him standing outside Wen Ran’s door, he didn’t look surprised.

He walked over, greeted him, and introduced himself as Qin Mu.

Mo Xiuchen deduced that this man was likely Wen Ran’s boyfriend. He didn’t understand why he had jumped to that conclusion, but he trusted his instincts.

Was it because of Qin Mu’s excellence and the demeanor he exuded? Or was it because of the warmth in his eyes when he looked at the door? In any case, Mo Xiuchen felt a twinge of animosity towards Qin Mu – the kind of discomfort one feels towards a love rival.

Wen Ran was struck by Mo Xiuchen’s words, her half-eaten dumpling left idly in her chopsticks, her beautiful eyes blankly blinking in surprise.

She tried to remember the day he was talking about, the day he came back and left again.

She was with her friend…

It was Xiaoxiao. Then, she remembered the day when she and Xiaoxiao were sitting in the café. Xiaoxiao showed her the photo she’d taken the night before. She had saved it in her phone and, as she looked at it, she turned sad.

So, Mo Xiuchen had seen her that day. A mix of feelings surged within Wen Ran – moved, bitter, or perhaps sorrowful.

“Ranran, what’s wrong?”

Noticing the change in Wen Ran’s expression, Mo Xiuchen looked at her with a hint of concern entering his gaze, inquiring softly.
