Chapter 257: Star island III

Rhys did not answer right away. He looked at everyone.

"Status?" he asked.

Sophia nodded. "Mana is stable."

Lyra said, "No injuries."

Caria smiled. "I’m fine."

Aria added, "The system reacted well to teamwork. That matters."

Puddle floated up and down. "Puddle okay!"

Rhys turned back to the crystal. "We accept phase two."

The crystal flashed once.

"Confirmation received," the voice said.

"Trial phase two. Judgment."

The ground shook lightly. The symbols changed. This time, they spread wider, covering most of the ruins.

From the stone platform, new constructs rose. These were different. Taller. Smoother. Their movements were slow, but heavier.

Sophia frowned. "Stronger than before."

Aria nodded. "Still controlled. Still a test."

The voice continued.

"Condition: restraint.

Failure state: excessive force."

Caria sighed. "So I really can’t smash them."

Lyra said, "Then don’t."

The constructs moved. One approached Rhys directly.

Rhys stepped forward and raised his weapon, but did not strike. He blocked, redirected, and stepped aside, guiding the construct away from the others.

Another moved toward Sophia.

Caria intercepted it, using her shield and body weight to stop it without attacking.

Lyra distracted a third, forcing it to turn and lose balance.

Aria noticed the symbols changing color. "It’s tracking aggression levels!"

Sophia adjusted immediately. She stopped offensive magic and focused only on barriers and slowing spells.

Puddle floated near one construct and released a gentle pulse of light. The construct slowed and stopped.

The crystal pulsed again.

"Behavior acceptable," the voice said.

But then the ground changed again.

A single construct at the center grew larger. Its glow brightened.

Lyra narrowed her eyes. "Boss version."

Aria said quickly, "This one tests leadership."

The large construct moved faster than the others. It attacked in wide, controlled swings.

Rhys raised his voice. "Same plan. I lead. Everyone supports."

They moved together.

Lyra drew its attention.

Caria blocked its path.

Sophia weakened its movement.

Puddle stayed close to Rhys, boosting recovery.

Rhys stepped in at the right moment, struck once—not hard, not lethal—right at a glowing symbol.

The construct froze.

Then it lowered itself and broke apart into stone.

Silence returned.

The symbols faded.

The crystal floated lower.

"Trial phase two complete," the voice said.

"Judgment: acceptable."

Aria let out a long breath. "That was close."

Caria laughed. "That was annoying."

Lyra relaxed slightly. "Still alive. Good."

Sophia smiled. "We adapted fast."

Rhys looked at the crystal. "What now?"

The crystal glowed steadily.

"Final phase unlocked," the voice said.

"Choice required. Proceed or withdraw."

Rhys looked at his team, calm but serious.

"We’ve come this far," he said. "We continue."

Caria raised an eyebrow. "Really? After that?"

Lyra crossed her arms. "We know the risks. I’m in."

Sophia nodded. "If we withdraw now, we learn nothing new."

Aria adjusted her notes. "I want to see the full structure. We can do this carefully."

Puddle floated higher, glowing brighter. "Team go! Puddle go!"

Rhys turned back to the crystal. "We proceed."

The crystal pulsed rapidly, brighter than before. The symbols on the ground shifted, forming a wide circle around the central platform.

"Final phase initiated," the voice said.

"Assessment: full capability. Trial: complete engagement."

From the platform, multiple constructs rose at once. They were taller, smoother, and faster than anything before. Some held weapons, others moved like armored beasts.

Lyra whispered, "All at once... this will test everything."

Rhys signaled, "Stay together. Focus. No unnecessary force—observe patterns first."

The constructs advanced in coordinated formations.

Caria blocked one that lunged at her, careful not to break it.

Lyra darted between two, using movement to redirect them.

Sophia focused on support, shielding the team and slowing construct movements.

Aria moved with caution, tracking the glowing symbols on each construct. "They’re connected. Damaging one influences the others."

Puddle glowed and sent pulses of soft light to disrupt the constructs’ speed, buying the team small advantages.

Rhys stepped forward, leading a coordinated strike—not hard, precise. Each hit aligned with the construct’s glowing patterns, neutralizing them without destroying them.

The constructs shifted, adapting to their approach. The team adjusted seamlessly, working together.

Minutes passed. The constructs stopped responding, lowering their arms and kneeling slightly.

The crystal pulsed once, intensely.

"Final trial complete," the voice said.

"Participants verified. Judgment: qualified."

A calm silence followed. The ruins felt empty, yet alive.

Aria exhaled. "We... did it."

Caria grinned, lowering her weapon. "Finally. That was exhausting."

Lyra relaxed her stance. "We survived. Together."

Sophia smiled, letting her magic settle. "And we stayed in control."

Rhys looked at the crystal. "This place... it tested us, but it also showed us what we can do. Take notes, remember everything. This knowledge matters."

The crystal floated one last time, then dimmed, becoming still. The ruins felt peaceful, as if waiting for the next visitors.

Puddle twirled happily. "Team strong! Puddle proud!"

Rhys nodded. "Let’s rest here for now. Then we explore further tomorrow. Star Island still has more secrets."

The team settled near the platform, keeping watch over the ruins. The first trials were complete, but the island’s mysteries were far from over.

The team spent the rest of the day setting up a small, quiet camp near the ruins. No fire—just mats and blankets, carefully placed so nothing would disturb the surrounding magic.

Caria flopped down onto a blanket. "I don’t care how old this place is. My back needs a break."

Lyra leaned against a standing pillar, scanning the trees. "Quiet... for now. But we can’t relax completely."

Sophia checked her potions one more time. "Everything is fine. Mana is steady, no injuries. That’s a good sign."

Aria flipped through her notes, jotting observations about the constructs, the symbols, and the crystal’s responses. "The patterns repeat. But small variations suggest this island adapts. It’s learning from us."

Puddle floated around happily. "Puddle happy! Team safe!"

Rhys finally lowered himself onto the ground, leaning back against a stone. "We rest tonight. Tomorrow, we explore the rest of the ruins. Step by step."

Caria grumbled happily. "Good. I earned this."

Lyra smirked. "Don’t get too comfortable. We still have an island to map."

Sophia nodded. "We can recover, then return with full focus."

Aria added, "The ley lines we saw might lead to deeper areas. We need to be ready."

Rhys closed his eyes for a moment. "We did well today. But Star Island is bigger than we realize. Stay alert, stay together, and we’ll uncover its secrets safely."

As the sun dipped below the horizon, the ruins grew quiet. The crystal no longer glowed, but the air still hummed with latent magic.

The team rested, knowing that tomorrow would bring more challenges—but for now, they had earned this calm.

Puddle floated near Rhys, glowing faintly. "Adventure tomorrow! Puddle ready!"

Rhys smiled. "We’ll be ready. Together."
