Chapter 256: Star Island II

The sand felt firm under their boots as they moved away from the shore. The ship stayed behind them, quiet and still.

Rhys raised a hand. "We stop here for a moment."

Everyone paused.

Lyra looked around carefully. Tall trees, thick bushes, and uneven ground. No clear paths.

"No movement," she said. "But the forest is dense."

Aria knelt and placed her hand on the ground. "The magic here is stable, but different. It flows slowly. Like it’s watching."

Caria rolled her shoulders. "So... not friendly, not hostile?"

"Exactly," Aria replied.

Sophia nodded. "That means we don’t rush."

Puddle floated low near the ground. "Island feels quiet. Not empty. Quiet."

Rhys considered the area. "We set a short camp near the shore. Just in case we need to fall back."

They agreed and worked quickly. No fire, no noise. Just a marked spot and a clear escape route.

Once done, they moved inland together.

The forest grew thicker after a short walk. Strange plants lined the ground. Some glowed faintly. Others moved slightly when they passed.

Caria frowned. "I don’t like plants that move."

Lyra smirked. "Then don’t touch them."

They heard a sound ahead. Soft footsteps.

Rhys signaled for silence.

A small creature stepped into view. Not hostile. It looked like a mix of a deer and a lizard, with faint star-like marks on its body.

It stared at them.

Puddle floated forward slowly. "Hello?"

The creature tilted its head, then stepped back and disappeared into the trees.

Sophia exhaled. "That confirms it. Native life. Magical, but calm."

Aria’s eyes shone. "This island has evolved on its own for a long time."

Rhys nodded. "We move carefully. No fighting unless we have to."

They continued deeper, marking trees as they went.

After some time, Lyra stopped. "Stone ahead."

They pushed past the last line of trees and saw it.

Old ruins. Broken stone pillars. Strange symbols carved into the ground. Faded, but still strong with magic.

Aria froze. "This is it. An ancient site."

Caria tightened her grip on her weapon. "And probably guarded."

Sophia scanned the area. "I don’t feel immediate danger."

Puddle floated excitedly. "Old place! Important place!"

Rhys stepped forward slowly. "We don’t touch anything yet. We observe. Learn the layout."

They stood at the edge of the ruins, silent and alert.

Star Island had finally shown them its first secret.

They spread out slightly, keeping each other in sight.

Lyra moved first, light on her feet. She checked the ground, the pillars, and the shadows between them. "No traps that I can see. But the stone is worn. Watch your steps."

Aria followed, carefully studying the symbols. "These markings aren’t decorative. They’re part of a system. Old, but still active."

Sophia closed her eyes for a moment, sensing the flow of mana. "The magic here is sleeping, not dead. If we disturb it too much, it may respond."

Caria glanced around the ruins. "So we poke it gently. Or not at all."

Puddle floated higher, glowing softly. "Feels like waiting. Like test place."

Rhys nodded. "Then we don’t rush the test."

They walked the outer edge of the ruins, counting pillars and noting broken sections. At the center stood a circular stone platform, cracked but intact.

Lyra pointed. "That spot feels important."

Aria agreed. "It’s an anchor point. Something was activated here long ago."

Sophia frowned slightly. "And it could be activated again."

Rhys raised a hand. "We stop here."

Everyone froze.

A low sound came from the ruins. Stone grinding against stone.

One of the broken pillars shifted, moving on its own. Symbols along its surface lit up, faint but clear.

Caria took a stance. "So much for no touching."

Lyra drew her blades. "Still no enemies in sight."

From the center platform, a soft light rose into the air. It formed a simple shape—a floating crystal, dull and cracked.

Aria’s breath caught. "A control core... damaged, but functioning."

Sophia steadied her staff. "That means this place is aware of us."

Puddle floated close to Rhys. "Island watching now."

Rhys stepped forward, calm but ready. "Then we answer carefully."

The crystal pulsed once.

A clear, emotionless voice echoed through the ruins.

"Visitors detected. Trial state: incomplete."

The team held their positions.

This ruin was not abandoned.

It was waiting.

The crystal floated higher and turned slowly. Light passed over the ruins, scanning them.

Sophia spoke quietly. "It’s identifying us."

Aria nodded. "Likely checking intent, strength, or role."

Caria tightened her grip. "If it starts shooting, I’m breaking it."

Lyra kept her eyes on the shadows. "Still nothing moving."

The voice spoke again, calm and flat.

"Trial incomplete. Condition unmet. Guardian state: dormant."

Everyone relaxed just a little.

Rhys asked clearly, "What is the trial?"

There was a short pause.

"Purpose verification required," the voice replied. "Participants must demonstrate qualification."

Aria stepped forward half a step. "Qualification for what?"

"Access," the voice answered. "Knowledge. Passage. Authority."

Caria muttered, "Of course."

Sophia looked at the crystal. "And how do we demonstrate that?"

The crystal pulsed again. Symbols on the ground lit up in a wide circle around the central platform.

"Trial parameters initializing," the voice said.

"Non-lethal evaluation."

Rhys raised his hand slightly. "Everyone stay calm. No sudden moves."

The stone platform shifted. Sections of it rose, forming simple shapes—stone constructs, rough and unfinished. They did not attack. They just stood there.

Lyra studied them. "Training constructs."

Aria nodded. "Basic guardians. Meant to test control, not killing power."

Caria rolled her neck. "So... sparring?"

"Likely," Sophia said. "We hold back."

Puddle floated forward, curious. "Puddle help?"

Rhys considered for a moment, then nodded. "Yes. But carefully."

The voice spoke again.

"Trial phase one. Coordination."

The constructs moved at the same time. Slow. Predictable. Not aggressive, but advancing.

Rhys gave quick orders. "Lyra, flank and distract. Caria, block only. No heavy strikes. Sophia, support magic. Aria, observe and record patterns."

Everyone moved.

Lyra slipped around the side, drawing a construct’s attention without striking it down.

Caria stepped in front of another, stopping its advance with controlled force.

Sophia cast light barriers, guiding movement instead of attacking.

Aria watched closely, eyes on the symbols reacting to their actions.

Puddle floated between them, releasing a soft light that slowed one construct further.

The crystal pulsed again.

"Coordination acceptable," the voice said.

The constructs stopped and lowered themselves back into the ground.

The light faded slightly.

Aria exhaled. "We passed the first check."

Caria grinned. "That was it? I didn’t even sweat."

Lyra sheathed her blades. "Don’t celebrate yet."

Rhys looked at the crystal. "We’re willing to continue."

There was a longer pause this time.

Then the voice answered.

"Trial phase two available.

Warning: higher risk."

The ruins remained quiet, waiting for their choice.
