Chapter 242: Black out.

Leilani.

If there was something I loved more than the smell of blueberries muffins wafting through the air, then it was the way Chalice shook uncontrollably like a leaf in the wind.

It was the way the pungent smell of her fear filled my nose. It was her panic, her desperation... heavens, I even revelled in the way she gasped as if short of breath... The way she cried for mercy... and how she got none of those.

Right now, she was waving her hands in the air like a lunatic and whenever she stopped, she would turn to land a slap on Louis’ face... his head. In fact, wherever she could touch as she yelled; 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦

"You don’t know what you’re saying! Do you know that your words can be considered treason?!"

"What is treason?" That was Kael who suddenly asked.

Since the beginning of this whole debacle, he’s been silent. Calculative... and while his eyes never left my face for even a moment, I could easily tell that it wasn’t I that he was thinking about. It was Chalice.

He drawled; "Do you know the meaning of the word ’treason’?"

At the sound of his voice, Chalice lowered her head and hiccuped. I almost smiled when she wiped the tears off her face and leaned close to him as if silently screaming; ’Help me!’

But he didn’t look like he was here to help her. If anything, I feared that he wanted to break her.

"T-treason means stealing from... it means lying about..."

"Dumbass..!" I hissed under my breath, causing a few people present to turn to me. When Chalice’s eyes landed on me, they thinned. She spat; "What the fuck did you just say?"

"I just called you an empty brain. I said you’re a dumbass and that I can’t believe that we’re sisters with how stupid you are!"

She gasped and I noticed how the expression on her face went from desperately sorry to irritated in a second. However, she was just about to speak when I waved her off and took a step back, intentionally leaning closer to Zevran when I noticed the way her nostrils flared.

I spat; "Treason means betraying one’s people or government."

Her lips snapped shut. "Oh."

"Of course, oh." I mumbled, twisting the knife of humiliation even deeper into her chest. "You don’t know the meaning of a word but you think it’s just sexy to throw it around like a smartass?!" I snorted, but surprisingly, this time, she didn’t hit me with a clap back.

She didn’t even clap back.

She simply ignored me and turned to Kael, her voice dropping a few notches as she whispered to him; "I didn’t betray you."

"You betrayed our wedding vows by sleeping with your bodyguard." Kael answered coldly. "You betrayed all we stood for by plotting behind our backs..."

"You even tried to kill your twin and for the longest time, pretended like it was your twin who was after you." Zevran added andI noticed the way she crumbled even more.

If she was in pain or ashamed earlier, then now it was worse.

She whispered; "But I didn’t—"

"Did you or did you not send some rogues to attack her?" Zevran seethed from beside me, making me flinch slightly before turning to him.

And the sound of his voice, Chalice crumbled again. She shook her head.

"Don’t lie to me!" When he spoke this time, I felt goosebumps spread across my skin. I felt the way some people around ducked their heads almost instantly and I knew then and there that he’d used his Alpha voice again.

But why isn’t it working on me?

Why am I immune to a lot of things?

I was snapped out of these thoughts when her knees hit the floor. Now compelled, she sobbed; "I did... I did. I just wanted them to kill her so that I can take her place."

"Like you’re smart enough to take my place!" I hissed back, not missing the laughs that rippled through the crowd.

Chalice’s face colored a bright shade of pink, and coupled with the tears running down her face, she looked botched. She stuttered; "I wanted to be loved by you... to be accepted. I wanted to feel—"

"Eishhh! You’re such a greedy ingrate!" I heard someone hiss from behind me but before anyone could respond, Caelum cut in;

"That’s enough!" He snarled, "We’ve all heard what you have to say but it doesn’t take out the fact that your stolen company’s money for your own personal use. You were involved in an illicit affair with your bodyguard... and you plotted to kill your twin."

"We all act like we’ve forgotten that she murdered grandmother too and that Leilani was forced to bear the consequences for so long!"

That was Gavin, and as soon as I heard that, I felt the entire room freeze.

My mouth went dry too, and maybe it was because those words had managed to fuel the surge of some unpleasant memories, but I found myself fisting by my sides, my breath going heavy as I stared pointedly at Chalice still crouched on the floor.

"She has committed crimes that are unimaginable and should be made to face the consequences!"

"Please..." she sobbed, "I didn’t... I really didn’t sleep with Louis!"

"Then would you agree to have your pup removed from your womb and placed in an incubator?" Kael suggested but as soon as the words slipped out of his mouth, her head snapped up and she yelled;

"Why?"

"That way, we could perform a DNA test on it. We could find out if it is ours or his... and after that, we would decide on what to do about—"

"No!" She yelled, "don’t harm my baby!"

Maybe that was a reflex action but it had given all of us the answers we wanted to hear. And when she realized what she had done, her face fell. Goddess, I could swear that I saw the light slowly drain from her face.

She dropped her head and whispered; "I didn’t... I really didn’t..." but then as if possessed, she snapped her head up in such a way that her icy gaze now met mine as she seethed; "This is all your fault!"

I frowned. "How?"

"If you had never returned! If you had just died! Then I would never have been in this situation!"

"Is that what you think?" I whispered, "is that the lie you whisper to yourself whenever you go to bed?"

She gulped. "I hate you."

"Well, sister, the feeling is mutual..." I sassed back, but when she still wouldn’t back down, I added; "...and it is for this reason that I have decided to ensure that you totally crash and burn today, Candy— even though that wasn’t my intention in the first place."

The moment she staggered and fell to the floor, I knew that my words had hit right center.

"Leilani... what do you...?"

"Now, come forward Mr Clement..." I drawled and as I did, I noticed the confusion on everyone’s faces... followed by the realisation on Chalice’s.

And then she fainted!

It wasn’t one of those fake faintings she usually does. This was real. She literally blacked out!
