Chapter 175 -176: Stubborn as a Dead Duck_1
Muniang smiled, “Everyone, please take a seat.”
The room quickly became lively. Muniang had long wanted to invite Mrs. Du and her family for dinner but never found the chance. After all, Mrs. Du and her family had supported her and Mrs. Lin a great deal in the past, and it was only right to show gratitude both emotionally and rationally.
But Mrs. Du was restless inside, worried about whether her young niece had met with trouble, thinking why she hadn’t arrived yet.
While they were eating, Mrs. Du’s eldest son Dunzi came in, “Mother, I’ve looked all along the road and didn’t see anyone! Wanwan wouldn’t have taken a wrong turn. It’s not her first time coming here.”
Mrs. Du immediately stood up in fright, “What’s going on? How could no one be found?”
Mrs. Liu quickly said, “Mother, Wanwan didn’t come to our village alone. Isn’t Tiezhu with her? Nothing would have happened.”
“Dunzi, Datun, you two hurry and split up to search again. No matter what, we can’t lose people. Otherwise, forget how I would explain it to her mother; my heart would feel terribly heavy!” Mrs. Du’s tone was a bit frantic.
The two men quickly responded and rushed out to search separately.
With this disturbance, no one could continue eating. Everyone was preoccupied with thoughts of Wanwan, and worry crept into their hearts.
Muniang also found it quite strange, hoping nothing serious had happened.
After a tense wait, finally, the doorkeeper came in to report, “They’re back, they’re back!”
Mrs. Du was startled, “Clarify, who’s back?”
The servant boy quickly replied, “Everyone is back!”
Muniang was stunned, then looked up to see Dunzi, Datun, Li Cheng, a girl with fine brows and clear eyes, probably Wanwan, and Wanwan’s brother, Tiezhu, all returning together.
Mrs. Du heaved a sigh of relief and quickly took Wanwan by the hand, “You scared me to death, why did you only arrive now? Your mother said you left early in the morning, I thought something had happened to you!”
Song Wanwan, who knew how to behave properly, greeted everyone in the room politely before sitting down with Mrs. Du, “On our way here, we passed through the town and got distracted by the fun there, watching lots of festivities. When we realized it was getting late, we decided to take a shortcut to arrive sooner, but we didn’t expect to run into mountain bandits, just our luck.”
Mrs. Du’s heart tightened, “Mountain bandits? What happened?”
Song Wanwan squeezed Mrs. Du’s hand and smiled, “It’s alright, we were lucky to come across Li. If not for him, we really would have been bullied. Li was amazing, he took the bandit’s knife in two or three moves, and scared them off to where they wet themselves and fled!”
Muniang looked at Li Cheng in astonishment as he scratched his head in embarrassment, “It wasn’t much, I just couldn’t stand by and do nothing.”
Song Wanwan quickly said, “Li, don’t be modest. Standing up for what’s right and drawing your sword to help is what a knight does. With such an upright and courageous character, you’ll surely receive good fortune in the future!”
Li Cheng grew even more embarrassed, “I’m just a hunter with some skills in boxing and fighting; I hardly count as a knight.”
Mrs. Du started laughing, “Chengzi, don’t listen to the child’s nonsense; she’s just read too many storybooks, always talking about knights this and knights that!”
Song Wanwan playfully protested to Mrs. Du, “Aunt, could you not expose my shortcomings in front of others?”
The whole room burst into laughter, dispelling the previously tense atmosphere.
Qinghe and Muniang exchanged glances, nodding at each other, sensing a promising development.
Muniang hurriedly invited everyone to sit down, “Please sit and eat before the dishes get cold.”
Mrs. Du’s mood also improved and, holding Song Wanwan’s hand, she laughed, “Absolutely, Muniang’s cooking skills are one in a hundred. It would be a pity to miss this. Eat up while you can!”
Song Wanwan was a sweet talker too, “I’ve often heard my aunt praising Muniang, saying she’s capable and beautiful and knows how to make money, like she can do anything. I’ve even felt a bit jealous in my heart.”
Mrs. Du playfully tapped her, “You silly child, jealous? When has your aunt ever thought of anyone but you when it comes to good things?”
Qinghe silently observed Song Wanwan and thought the girl was cheerful and genuine. Such a girl would be a perfect match for her reclusive brother, wouldn’t she? Thinking this, Qinghe’s smile deepened.
Li Cheng, not understanding, looked at Qinghe, “Qinghe, why are you laughing? You’ve barely touched your food. Eat more, you’re carrying a child.” As he spoke, he placed a piece of chicken in Qinghe’s bowl.
Qinghe said, “Brother, I’ve been nourished with plenty of meat and fish every day. Missing one piece of meat won’t matter much. Miss Song here hasn’t had the chance to taste such delicacies, and today she even got a scare. You’re not here as a guest today; you’re practically a host. Shouldn’t you be looking after the guests?”
As she spoke, Qinghe kept giving Li Cheng meaningful glances.
Li Cheng became thoroughly confused. This was clearly Muniang’s house, so how had he become half a host?
Seeing him clueless, Muniang could only speak up, “Give Miss Wanwan some meat. Look how thin she is; she needs to eat more.”
Li Cheng, upon hearing this, quickly complied and added a piece of chicken to Song Wanwan’s bowl, “Miss Song, have some meat, eat!”
Song Wanwan timidly lowered her head. Mrs. Du saw this and knew there was a chance, so she laughed, “We’re all so familiar; no need to keep calling her Miss Song. Just call her Wanwan; that’s what we all do.”
Li Cheng hesitated, then agreed, calling out, “Wanwan.”
Song Wanwan, in turn, became more forthright and responded, “Hey, Big Brother Li!”
After seeing Mrs. Du and her family off, Li Qinghe dragged Li Cheng into the back room to talk.
“What are you doing, Qinghe?”
“Brother, what do you think of Wanwan?” Qinghe couldn’t wait to ask.
Li Cheng’s face instantly reddened, “What do you mean, ‘what do I think’?”
“I mean, as a daughter-in-law?”
Li Cheng’s face turned even redder, and he stammered, “Qinghe, how can you say such things? I, I—”
Qinghe was desperately anxious; knowing how her brother was, if she didn’t push him, he’d be a bachelor for life!

“What’s so random about it? You even saved her today. Wanwan is pretty, and from what I saw, she has a good temperament. It seemed to me you cared quite a bit about her. If you like her, you shouldn’t miss the chance!” Qinghe urged earnestly.
Li Cheng quickly waved his hand, “Where did you get the idea I like her? No, that’s not it!”
But then Muniang suddenly came in; she knew Li Cheng wouldn’t easily open up with his personality!
Li Qinghe, frustrated to death, “Why can’t you admit you like her? Your face is all red!” What was with her brother, determined to exasperate her to death? Why was finding him a wife so difficult?
Li Cheng prepared to be stubbornly defensive, “I said I don’t like her, and I don’t!”
