Fantasy Lord: I Have a Moving Castle-Chapter 49 - 2 After the Storm Rain Sound Kingfisher
Chapter 49: Chapter 2: After the Storm, Rain Sound Kingfisher
Chapter 49: Chapter 2: After the Storm, Rain Sound Kingfisher
Char walked toward the direction where the cries of a peculiar-sounding chick were coming from. After covering some distance, Betty and the Star Worm also heard the chick’s cries.
The Star Worm showed no particular reaction, but Betty immediately displayed an excited expression.
“That call, it’s a Rain Sound Kingfisher! Mr. Char, let’s hurry up,”
Instinctively, Betty flew toward the direction of the call but flew back after a short distance.
It wasn’t that she feared the Rain Sound Kingfisher would harm her; it was just that after the previous ordeal, she had become much more timid and dared not wander off recklessly anymore.
“Rain Sound Kingfisher?”
“Betty, you can tell what bird it is just by its call?”
Char asked as he continued forward.
“Yes, Mr. Char. Sister Fei Lin has a Rain Sound Kingfisher! The Rain Sound Kingfisher has such a lovely voice, Ira, and the others love listening to it sing,”
Betty chirped in explanation.
Soon, Char had everything figured out.
The “Fei Lin” and “Ira” Betty mentioned were Flower Fairies, her companions, with Fei Lin being the eldest and strongest among them.
Not only was Flower Fairy Fei Lin much stronger than Betty and the others, but she also had a Rain Sound Kingfisher as her animal companion, the only one among the several Flower Fairies of Green Rose Village to have a Demon Beast as her animal companion.
The other Flower Fairies’ animal companions were regular animals that were merely smarter and stronger due to Magic.

Soon, Char saw the Rain Sound Kingfisher that Betty spoke of, known for its captivating voice.
It was a palm-sized, chubby chick.
Most of its body was bare, with just a small part covered in beautiful aqua-blue feathers, and its exquisitely constructed nest made of twigs and bones was overturned nearby.
From the size of the nest, it seemed that adult Rain Sound Kingfishers weren’t large either, probably about the same size as the Clover Mantis.
The little one was soaked through and crying weakly.
Even as a Demon Beast, it had little resistance against the terrifying natural disaster the previous night.
Char glanced around, then locked eyes with the Clover Mantis, who had also been searching the area. Neither had found any trace of the adult Rain Sound Kingfishers.
It was unclear whether they had abandoned the nest or died in last night’s storm.
Thus, Char focused his attention on the chick.
A few lines of text appeared above the chick.
[Rain Sound Kingfisher (Chick)]
[Skills]: Rain Sound Song (0th level)
[Challenge Level]: 1/4
[Introduction]: The Rain Sound Kingfisher is an excellent singer at lakesides, capable of producing a variety of songs for different effects. In addition, they have the ability to manipulate wind and water, capable of sky battles as well as underwater engagements. This Rain Sound Kingfisher was just born recently and is very weak.
“Mr. Char, please help it, look how pitiful it is.”
Perhaps due to her fondness for companionship, Betty was filled with compassion for the Rain Sound Kingfisher chick before her. She flew to Char’s side, tugging a small crease in his clothing and pleading.
“Is… is a Rain Sound Kingfisher easy to tame?”
Char was somewhat hesitant.
The majority of Demon Beasts are difficult to tame and are utterly wild.
Especially the adult Demon Beasts, unless you used some special magic or Divine Arts, it was almost impossible to succeed. This was why Char had never attempted to tame wild Demon Beasts before, aside from recruiting Magic Pets.
Because the probability of success was very low.
He didn’t want the Demon Beast he raised with so much effort to turn ungrateful in the end.
Besides, how dangerous would it be to have a Demon Beast that could potentially lash out and harm someone nearby?
Even though Char had many Magic Pets for protection and Clover Mantis was strong enough to suppress with force, he didn’t want to take the risk.
“The Rain Sound Kingfisher is very gentle; it won’t hurt anyone, Mr. Char. Let’s give it a try!”
Betty pleaded again.
After hearing Betty’s words and seeing her pitiful, pleading expression, Char thought it over and agreed.
Even if just for Betty’s sake, he had to give it a chance, right?
Moreover, it wasn’t just for the sake of Betty’s face.
On one hand, he felt that compared to adult birds, the chances of taming a young bird were indeed much higher.
On the other hand, even if he couldn’t tame it, Betty could still try using the “animal companion” skill to tame it, which would significantly increase the probability of success.
After all, there was already a successful case in Green Rose Village.
This young Rain Sound Kingfisher had a Challenge Level of 1/4. By comparison, an adult Rain Sound Kingfisher could probably reach Level 2.
If successful in taming, it would also add considerable combat power.
A Level 2 Challenge Level could rank third in his squad, just behind Clover Mantis and himself, with no other being higher than Level 2.
“Alright, Clover Mantis, help it.”
Having agreed, Char then ordered Clover Mantis.
Clover Mantis immediately activated “Clover’s Summer,” and vibrant green light took the shape of clovers, surrounding the young Rain Sound Kingfisher.
With vitality infused, the previously languishing young Rain Sound Kingfisher visibly perked up much more.
Betty was not idle either; she approached the young bird and activated “aromatic healing.”
With both physical and spiritual healing, the young bird’s condition improved significantly, and its chirping grew stronger.
It was not a low-intelligence creature, and even in its youth, it displayed a certain sharpness. After gaining some strength, it struggled to stand up, then knocked its head, stabbing its long beak into the ground as if to express thanks by bowing.
‘This little guy has quite the insight.’
Char smiled inwardly, reached out to lift the Rain Sound Kingfisher, and placed it in the bamboo basket on his back.
With a new companion joining, Star Worm seemed very pleased, first flying a few circles around the Rain Sound Kingfisher, then darting into the bushes, gently bumping and breaking a dry branch to reveal a large grub hidden inside.
Clover Mantis swiftly appeared beside Star Worm. Knife Hand made a light slice, the sharp blade securing the grub, then, in a blink, it was behind Char, carefully offering the large white grub towards the Rain Sound Kingfisher’s beak, exhibiting a thoroughly maternal demeanor.
Char was slightly amazed; he knew Clover Mantis was even-tempered and extremely patient, often caring for Lantern Firefly, Star Worm, Lotus Leaf Frog, and Betty, which was a stark contrast to the decisive, ruthless killer shown in battle.
But even so, he had not expected Clover Mantis to show such an overwhelmingly maternal side.
