Fairy Tail: I Don't Want to Be the Guild Master-Chapter 479: Magical Warfare Unit, Erza Nightwalker
Chapter 479: Magical Warfare Unit, Erza Nightwalker
Carla’s face darkened with guilt. "Because... we were originally born in this world. When we were still just eggs, knowledge about Edolas and a specific mission was embedded into us. It’s our fault that Magnolia disappeared."
Wendy quickly stepped forward, trying to comfort her. "Carla, we’ve already talked about this! You and Happy didn’t do anything wrong!"
"But I still believe... since we came from Edolas, then we were at least indirectly responsible."
"Programming knowledge and missions into eggs..." Rhodes murmured, his tone thoughtful. As someone who had inherited knowledge through magical means himself, he could accept the explanation without much resistance.
Even though the idea of imprinting missions into unborn creatures sounded a bit far-fetched, in a world where magic could rewrite memories and alter fate, it wasn’t impossible.
"No, that doesn’t add up," Rhodes reasoned aloud. "Happy’s lived in the guild since the day he hatched. It’s been six years now. If he really had a secret mission, someone would’ve noticed. Not to mention, just look at him..."
It wasn’t that Rhodes was underestimating Happy’s intelligence, but the blue cat had never exactly been subtle. If he’d been hiding some grand mission all this time, it would’ve been the best-kept secret in all of Fairy Tail.
"Exactly!" Carla said, clearly frustrated. "Whatever that mission was, we were supposed to know it from the moment we were born! But that tomcat doesn’t remember anything!"
Her ears twitched in irritation. Though she’d long since decided to protect Wendy with all her heart, she couldn’t help but feel resentful. Why was she burdened with hidden truths and heavy responsibilities... while Happy got to laugh and play like any carefree child?
So was she the only one given this ’mission’? Was the spell only cast on her? Or had something gone wrong with Happy’s memory?
One thing was clear: Carla had no intention of fulfilling any shady directive. Her heart was aligned with protecting people, not betraying them. Which meant it likely wasn’t a spell that influenced the mind, but something else entirely.
Rhodes narrowed his eyes. "So... what is this mission of yours?"
Carla’s expression hardened. "That’s the one thing I absolutely refuse to talk about."
Wendy stepped in quickly. "Brother Rhodes... we agreed not to ask about it. Carla brought us here, and in return, we promised to respect her silence."
Rhodes locked eyes with Carla, his expression serious. She returned the look just as firmly, refusing to flinch or turn away.
Wendy looked anxiously between the two of them, worried an argument might break out.
’Undercover agent? A messenger? A living coordinate beacon?’ Rhodes ran through the possibilities in his mind.
In the end, he sighed. Whether it was worth asking depended entirely on trust. If he believed her, there was no need to force the issue. If he didn’t... then asking wouldn’t change anything.
"All right then," he said calmly. "But just remember, any mission that sends someone across worlds is bound to be tied to something important. It could be a vital clue to all of this."
Carla’s eyes widened slightly at that... but she still bit her lip, unable to bring herself to speak.
"When the time comes and you’re ready," Rhodes said gently, "tell us."
He wouldn’t push her. Trust wasn’t something that could be demanded.
Turning to Wendy, he shifted gears. It was time to talk about the next step.
"I arrived a bit earlier than you," Rhodes explained. "Based on the information I’ve gathered, it’s almost certain the King is behind all of this. So we need to head to the Royal Capital immediately."
"Mm!" Wendy nodded firmly. Compared to wandering around with no direction, having a clear goal brought her a sense of relief.
Carla spoke up, a bit concerned. "Should we call Natsu and Happy? They’ve been in there quite a while. Is that okay?"
"It’s fine," Rhodes said with a smirk. "At worst, they’ll just get beat up by this world’s Lucy."
The three of them stepped back into the guild. By now, Natsu had clearly realized this wasn’t their Fairy Tail. He was busy shouting in surprise as he identified everyone’s bizarre counterparts.
"Ahahaha, Cana! What in the world are you wearing?!"
"Nab’s actually working! And it’s a full-time job?! Has the apocalypse come?!"
"Wendy! Hurry and look! There’s a giant version of you here!"
Wendy froze in the doorway like she’d been struck by lightning. "T-That... that’s my Edolas counterpart?"
"This is hilarious!" Natsu burst out laughing again, turning his eyes to Rhodes. "Even Rhodes have a counterpart!"
"Aye~"
Natsu circled around Rhodes with exaggerated curiosity, inspecting him from head to toe. Suddenly, he slapped a hand against his palm as if something had dawned on him.
"Ah! Edolas Rhodes must be a complete idiot!"
"Aye~ Idiot!"
Bang! Bang!
Rhodes silenced the guild with two clean punches, one to each of them.
"Apologies, these two idiots have been bothering you long enough. We’ll be leaving now."
Carla sighed and said, "I really think you should explain it to them properly."
"This way’s faster," Rhodes replied dryly. "We can go over the details on the road."
Most of the key information had already been exchanged. Their destination was set: the Royal Capital. There wasn’t much else to discuss until they were on the move.
Rhodes prepared to summon a Murk Wolf to carry them out when an unexpected, thunderous beastly roar echoed from outside.
He stiffened.
It didn’t sound like a normal animal, it was more like a monstrous creature, perhaps something as fierce as a giant frog or a rampaging golem. Wendy and Natsu, who had only just picked themselves up, looked puzzled.
But the guild members reacted immediately. The moment the roar rang out, panic broke loose across the room.
"Oh no! The Fairy Hunter’s here!"
"Don’t tell me... this place has been exposed too?!"
"Those soldiers from the Royal Army, just how far are they planning to take this?!"
The atmosphere inside the guild was tense, but not in preparation for battle. No one was readying weapons or magic. In fact, there wasn’t even a flicker of fighting spirit.
That alone made one thing clear, there was an enormous gap in strength between the two sides... and Fairy Tail had clearly suffered devastating losses in the past.
"Levy! How’s the teleportation magic circle coming along?" someone called out.
"It still needs more time!" Levy shouted back, not looking up from her work. "And it’s your fault for distracting me, you stinky Lucy!"
Even as she frantically focused on stabilizing the teleportation array, she couldn’t resist bickering with her best friend.
Seeing Rhodes and the others about to head outside, Gray hurried over. "Hey! Where are you going?! It’s dangerous out there!"
Rhodes tilted his head casually. "Didn’t you just say the teleportation circle still needs more time?"
Wendy nodded. "It probably got delayed because we barged in so suddenly."
Natsu flashed them a grin. "Then we’ll hold off the enemy until it’s ready."
The three of them turned in sync, walking out the front doors side by side.
"Let us show you," Rhodes said, voice calm and confident, "how Fairy Tail fights in our world."
"You’re joking, right?! The ones chasing us are from the Royal Army, Second Magic War Division and Fourth Magic War Division!"
"Even if they didn’t all deploy, there are probably over a thousand soldiers out there!"
"And the captain of the Second Division is—!"
But before they could finish the sentence, Natsu’s jaw dropped. His eyes locked onto the figure standing atop a massive, beast-like magical machine in the distance.
"Er-Er-Er—Erza?!"
Wendy’s eyes widened in shock. "Miss Erza...?"
Carla’s voice was tight with anxiety. "Don’t tell me... in this world, Erza is an enemy?"
Happy gasped. "This is really bad!"
But Natsu was undeterred. "Don’t be scared! Our Erza’s crazy strong... maybe this world’s Erza is super weak!"
He clenched his fists, starting to get fired up. "This could be our chance to finally beat Erza up!"
Happy looked up at him with a mix of fear and logic. "But... no matter which world he’s from... Jellal is still strong, right?"
Natsu: "..."
