Chapter 69: Survive

"I will find you, Katrina. And you will pay for this."

A wave of emotion tried to overwhelm his throat, but his eyes remained dry. Only a cold emptiness persisted within him.

"Cold Blooded...you won’t even let me have that." He murmured, addressing his own ability.

"It’s already rank A,I need to be careful. Or maybe I should play the fool, to get a Berserk-type skill so it auto-stabilizes?"

He pressed his hand against the wound on his side, gritting his teeth to stifle a groan. Then, his gaze turned towards the interior of the ravine, where the shadows seemed denser and the passage narrower.

"First," he said quietly, "I have to survive."

And, squaring his shoulders despite the pain, he plunged into the waiting darkness.

...

Kaiser was at a dead end.The rocky wall behind him was too high to climb, especially in his condition. Moreover, a storm was raging outside the ravine, and the icy wind literally took his breath away. The only way out seemed to be a dark, narrow opening dug into the opposite wall. After taking a deep breath to prepare, he entered it, leaving the faint daylight behind.

As soon as he entered the cave, darkness swallowed him. The air was damp and heavy with the smell of earth and wet stone. A cold mist hung near the ground, making visibility difficult. Although the place was inhospitable, it at least offered shelter from the raging wind.

He advanced cautiously, keeping one hand against the damp wall to guide himself. With each step, a sharp pain shot up from his left arm, still stiff with frost. The ground was littered with pebbles and sharp rock fragments. He slipped, and a sharp stone deeply cut his leg.

"Fuck...."

He clenched his jaw to keep from crying out.

’I don’t know what’s in the dark,I can’t be noisy.’

A few steps further, while trying to regain his balance, another stone, particularly sharp, sliced open the palm of his hand. Blood slowly flowed from the wound. He exhaled, a hiss between his teeth, but kept his calm. The Cold Blooded skill remained very important in this kind of situation, preventing panic from taking hold of him. All he felt was the pain, constant.

"Did I screw the Seraph of Luck’s lover to be so unlucky? What is this shitty luck..." He hadn’t even finished speaking when a deep growl echoed from the depths of the cave. Kaiser froze, then slowly straightened up.

Its ebony fur almost blended with the night, and its fangs gleamed with a spectral light. Immediately, Kaiser took a step back, raised his good arm, and projected a Slashing Cut. The energy blade struck the creature on the flank with a sharp sound. The wolf collapsed with a high-pitched howl, then moved no more.

No sooner had the opponent fallen than other growls answered it, rapidly approaching. A second wolf lunged, then a third. Kaiser adjusted his stance and projected two new successive Slashing Cuts. The first two beasts were felled in seconds. But the third one leaped before he could recharge.

Kaiser rolled to the side, narrowly avoiding the sharp claws. The shock of the impact resonated in his already painful skull. The wolf pivoted and charged again.

At that moment,he used aura in his legs.

Dash

His body became a blurry streak, and he materialized three meters away. The beast, off-balance, briefly exposed its chest. Seizing the opening, Kaiser drove his weapon into its sternum. The wolf collapsed heavily onto the ground.

A relative silence returned. Motionless, Kaiser caught his breath, each inhalation burning his lungs. His frozen arm sent sharp stabbing pains through him, his injured leg throbbed with every movement, and his open palm burned from contact with the icy air. Yet, he refused to stop.

"Every cut,I’m saving it for you, you bitch half-elf," he murmured.

"At this rate,I’m going to become racist like the elves of Yggdrasil."

He continued on his way. Each step was an ordeal. In the distance, he heard the irregular sound of water droplets falling into a puddle, a sound that, far from being soothing, accentuated his feeling of isolation.

Then a heavy, dull sound made the ground tremble. Something massive was approaching.

A high common troll emerged from the darkness. Its grayish skin was dotted with crevices, and its vacant gaze was nonetheless charged with a primitive aggression. A smell of putrid meat emanated from its breath. Kaiser understood immediately that this fight would be perilous.

The creature let out a deep roar and charged.

Kaiser barely dodged and launched another Slashing Cut. The energy blade barely scratched the troll’s thick skin. The beast retaliated with a violent backhand blow. Kaiser only had time to raise his forearm to protect his face. The impact threw him violently against the rocky wall.

"Fuck!!"

Kaiser’s back cracked ominously on impact. He collapsed to the ground, dazed and stunned.

*Cough*

The troll rushed at him to finish him off.Kaiser attempted a Dash, but his energy was at its lowest. His aura flickered, his vision blurred.

"Not yet... I must...," he gasped.

Since his reincarnation, this was the first time he had been this close to death. And in reality, even though he was cold-blooded...

"I’m scared,damn it..."

He barely managed to roll backward. The monster’s fist smashed down where he had been a second earlier. Kaiser retreated further, suddenly realizing the obvious.

"I can’t win in this state."

He turned around and rushed into a narrow passage between two enormous rocks. The troll tried to follow, but its massive body got stuck. It struck the stone in rage, but Kaiser was already out of reach.

He felt his way forward in the dark, his breathing wheezing and irregular. His heart was pounding wildly in his chest. His wounds seemed to reopen with every movement. 𝕗𝗿𝕖𝐞𝐰𝗲𝕓𝐧𝕠𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝐨𝚖

"I have to hold on... just a little longer...," he repeated like a mantra.

"Maybe it will leave."

He finally found a recess,a small natural alcove. He collapsed to his knees, his body shaken by tremors. With clumsy gestures, he searched his spatial ring. The supplies were almost empty; Ruby held the majority of the rations. Only a few pieces of dried meat and bread remained, and a single vial containing a reddish, thick liquid.

The Elixir of Life.

He grabbed it, unscrewed the cap, and swallowed the potion in one gulp.

"*Cough* That feels good..."

An immediate, beneficial warmth spread throughout his body. His aching muscles relaxed, his breathing steadied. He felt his wounds begin to tingle, a sign they were slowly but surely closing.

A glimmer of determination returned to his gaze.
