Evil dragon has a warm heart-Chapter 114 - 113 Nourishing Qi
Chapter 114: Chapter 113 Nourishing Qi
Chapter 114 -113 Nourishing Qi
The Spirit Insect bears the name “insect” not only because it indeed resembles an overly plump bug, but also because its behavior is like that of a bug as well.
Bugs are solely responsible for eating, drinking, sleeping, and growing.
Aside from occasionally nibbling on some jade powder, Spirit Insects spend the rest of their time sleeping and growing, with no other interests. They don’t act lively all day nor chirp incessantly like Little Sprites or Mushroom Birds.
Therefore, they rarely become restless and if they do, there are only a few possible reasons.
The cordyceps is under threat, its lifespan is coming to an end, a strange conspecific is approaching, the contract master is gravely injured or deceased…
Or, it has grown to a critical point and is beginning to evolve to the next stage.
“All scenarios can be ruled out, I even passed by the Birch Forest when I came back from fishing, and everything was normal there… so there’s only one possibility left…” Russell took a deep breath and suddenly wondered if the Shadowflame Dragon from the duke’s family was truly watching him.
Otherwise.
This earliest-contracted Fluorescent Fungi Mushroom Bug, why would it become restless—excluding other possibilities, there’s only evolution left.
Quickly.
The Knight Attendant Jack, who also serves as the captain of the Birch Forest Cordyceps Guard Squad, rushed over on horseback, hurrying into the manor’s annex.
He reported to Russell: “Sir, the first Fluorescent Fungi’s cordyceps is safe and sound, with no difference from usual; I also checked the second one’s cordyceps, and there’s similarly no unusual change.”
Russell had two Fluorescent Fungi Mushroom Bugs, one given by Baron Roman when he was enfeoffed, the other a coming-of-age gift from his sister, Rolin.
The one that was restless now was the former.
“Good, I understand, thank you for your effort, go rest,” Russell waved and felt even more certain inside.
“Serving you is not a burden, Sir,” Jack bowed and said, “Then I shall take my leave; if there is anything you need, just command.”
He descended the stairs and exited the front door.
Jack didn’t leave immediately, but went to the rodent kennel, spotting the Red-eyed Rat King fussing about something in the corner of the cage.
He immediately brightened up, then pulled out a piece of Primordial Beast jerky from his bosom and handed it over: “Rat King, look what tasty treat I’ve brought you.”
“Squeak,” the Red-eyed Rat King, once starved and now particularly gluttonous, immediately took the jerky and munched on it voraciously.
After Jack delivered the jerky, he squatted by the kennel for a while before standing up.
Just as he turned around, he saw Kevin the Gold and Silver Wolfhound, left to monitor the Red-eyed Rat King, gazing at him with a distant look in his eyes.
He awkwardly fumbled in his pocket while speaking and quickly walked away: “Kevin, sorry, I just brought one piece of jerky… Next time, I’ll bring you jerky to eat, I still have things to do, I’m leaving now.”
Having said that, he mounted his horse and galloped away.
Only leaving behind Kevin, lying in his kennel, his eyes full of contempt and resentment—aren’t contracted Fantasy Beasts desirable anymore!
On the second floor of the manor’s annex, in the elf room.
Butler Morris was full of anxiety; he tried to speak several times but swallowed his words, unable to hold back he finally asked: “Sir… Does this Mushroom Bug have a chance to evolve into a Mushroom Bird?”
“I don’t know.”
“Ah.”
“Don’t worry, Morris, whether it can evolve or not depends on whether the willpower of this Mushroom Bug is strong enough,” Russell had calmed down from his initial surge of excitement and tension, speaking indifferently, “Or rather, if the duke’s Great Dragon is willing to spare it a glance.”
The gaze of a dragon is only a blessing.
If the evolution of a Spirit Insect also required a dragon’s concerns, then the duke’s Shadowflame Dragon would certainly die young, worried to death.

“Ah!” Butler Morris sighed.
But he soon mustered his spirits and said cheerfully, “Sir, under the watchful eye of the great dragon, this mushroom bug will surely evolve successfully! It is full of vitality; it will succeed!”
“Relax, Morris,” Russell said with a chuckle, “Success is luck, failure is the norm. Don’t be anxious over things you can’t control. Go take a break and pour yourself a cup of tea.”
“I apologize, Sir. I lost my composure,” Morris said, bowing in apology.
“Don’t worry about it. Go on, have some tea.”
“I’ll take my leave, Sir,” Morris said, casting a profound glance at his master, his heart filled with emotions.
He was already past forty, and though he may not have experienced great turmoil in his life, he had considerable experience.
However, in the face of events, he realized his ability to maintain composure was far inferior to Russell’s, who was only sixteen years old.
“Perhaps, this is what it means to be born a noble,” Morris thought to himself.
Obviously, Morris didn’t know that the reason Russell could face the spirit insect’s restlessness so calmly was not because he had mastered the art of maintaining composure.
It was because he had confidence.
“Little guy, work hard!” Russell patted the oily green body of the Youguangxun Mushroom Bug, “If you were born into another family, you might have to rely on yourself to evolve. But since you have become my spirit insect, alright then, we’ll meet again tonight!”
Time flew by quickly, and night had fallen.
Shortly after Russell lay down, his consciousness awakened in the Gloomy Dreamland. He twisted his neck and just happened to hear a “croak” as the Little Dream Dragon flew over.
“Ice Cream, it’s going to be tough for you tonight; I’ve taken on a job,” Russell said as he mounted the Little Dream Dragon and instantly, the magic light began to sparkle all around.
The Little Dream Dragon, not knowing the reason, croaked a questioning “Croak?”
Russell guided it to fly into the next room, which was the Elf room.
Inside, the magic lights of seven spirit insects reflected off one another, making for a beautiful sight. From the different species of spirit insects, the glow of their magic lights varied, adorned with their own distinctive colors amidst a faint white glow.
“Ice Cream, take a look at this mushroom bug, the Youguangxun Mushroom Bug. See its light flickering,” Russell pointed at one of the magic lights.
Unlike the other six steady magic lights, this one had a pearlescent white with a hint of green luminance. The light pulsated constantly, now bright, now dim, with the green within the white looking as though it was struggling to expand and break free.
But the green light was still too weak to break out of the white light’s envelope.
Seeing this, Russell understood that the will to evolve in this Youguangxun Mushroom Bug was not strong enough.
The green light could represent the light of evolution, and the white light could represent the light of the mushroom bug itself. Now that the green light could not overcome the white, it also meant that there was basically no chance of successful evolution for the Youguangxun Mushroom Bug.
“As expected,” Russell sighed.
The chance for a spirit insect to successfully evolve into a little sprite was very small; often dozens or even hundreds of spirit insects might not produce a single sprite — otherwise, the Fluorescent Fungi Family wouldn’t have only two sprites after so many years of cultivating in the Glowing Valley.
One of which was even a dowry brought by Lady Meryl.
“By calculation, our family’s mushroom bird Lorey is a second-generation mushroom bird. The original mushroom bird was acquired during my great-grandfather’s time and lasted until my grandfather’s. Shortly after it died, a mushroom bug evolved into Lorey.”
In the century since, the Glowing Valley had nurtured many Youguangxun Mushroom Bugs, their ten to twenty-year lifespans fleeting in a blink.
Only Lorey stood out and successfully challenged fate.
The difficulty of evolution was evident.
“Croak?” Seeing Russell sigh, the Little Dream Dragon cocked its head.
Suppressing the feelings in his heart, Russell chuckled, “Well, Ice Cream, do me a favor and give this little one a burst of dragonflame, will you?”
