Chapter 288: Chapter 288: Succubus Alice and Yasser’s Warning

Yasser rushed toward Box No.13 again. He had worked at Suncrest Mercantile for a long time, but he had never walked that far before.

Luckily, even though Ratfolk have short legs, Yasser was strong, so he didn’t feel tired at all.

When he reached the door to Box No.13, Yasser took a deep breath and deliberately messed up his neat clothes just a little.

He couldn’t stop thinking about what Aelris had said.

"He was still just as shocked and serious as before; the feeling hadn’t faded at all."

"That guy has incredible wealth, and he’s smarter than I could have ever imagined, Yasser thought to himself. With that kind of money, he’ll be thriving in Heartspire before long."

Right now, besides delivering Aelris’s message to Miss Lumina, his biggest priority was to promote Hazel!

That was the bond between him and Aelris, and he had to treat it with the utmost care.

"Perfect timing. The succubus who was supposed to handle the pigfolk is seriously injured and needs medical care. How about we let Hazel handle that? It’ll cost her nothing, but after she gets promoted, it’ll also serve as a warning to the other staff." Yasser quickly made his decision regarding that succubus’s fate.

He took a deep breath, his breathing growing heavier, then knocked on the door of Box No.13.

"Miss Lumina, Mr. Aelris..."

At the same time, in front of Box No.13, Aiden squinted as he watched the succubus bowing her head and hurrying away. His mind was racing.

Raphael seemed in great pain before he left. He really needs [Chain of Pain Transfer].

"If I were him, what would I do?"

"Send Draw and Loros to gather intel. This way, it makes sense for them to leave."

"But then, how would they gather it?"

Aiden watched the succubus stumble away, his eyes gradually turning cold.

He returned to his box and carefully asked Hazel about the succubus.

Hazel instinctively curled in on herself, but seeing Aiden right there beside her, she quickly composed herself.

"Succubus Alice is a formal employee of Suncrest Mercantile. She has her own residence and has worked here for many years," Hazel explained slowly.

Aiden figured Raphael might try to find Succubus Alice to dig up information about him.

That didn’t matter much. The real concern was that Aiden wasn’t sure if, besides Raphael, Loros, and Draw, there were any other powerful Demons lurking.

He didn’t want to let something like last time happen again.

If there were others, he needed to be ready in advance!

Aiden took a deep breath. He decided to try tailing Succubus Alice later to see if he could find anything.

He had limited time and couldn’t afford to waste too much.

"Yasser shouldn’t be a problem anymore. He won’t miss out on a wealthy Slaughter Demon like me."

"I bet if I offer a high enough price, you could probably leave. But I still have things to do, so I can’t take you out of the Abyss," Aiden said.

Hazel looked at Aiden in silence, shook her head, and replied,

"Since I won’t be in danger and I don’t need to host other guests, I might as well stay here. As long as I’m here, I can help any other human women who come after me. They won’t feel as desperate as I did. I’ll give them a glimmer of hope for freedom."

Hazel took a deep breath. The only thing weighing on her mind now was this human who was pretending to be a Slaughter Demon.

That was exactly what Aiden had written on her palm before they slept together.

"It’s still not safe here. Be careful. I’ll wait for you," Hazel said. She didn’t ask to see what Aiden looked like underneath his disguise.

Aiden nodded. He reached into his storage space, pulled out some Legendary Rank materials, and handed them to Hazel.

"These are for you. If possible, keep an eye out for the roots of the Skeleton Tree."

"Also, once you get promoted, you’ll likely have more freedom. Try finding other humans in Heartspire and see if you can train them."

Hazel didn’t hesitate. She took the materials from Aiden’s hand immediately.

Standing on her tiptoes, she gave Aiden a hard kiss on the cheek, smiling, "Don’t hate it. Everything on my mouth is yours."

Aiden blinked in surprise, then nodded helplessly.

He left the box right after that.

Once Aiden was gone, Hazel took a deep breath and looked at the materials in her hands, muttering to herself:

"Staying here... besides what I said, it means... maybe I can help you in Heartspire."

"Next time we meet, I really want to see if you’re handsome!"

Just then, Yasser appeared at the door, panting heavily. His small eyes darted around.

"Has Mr. Aelris left already?"

Hazel nodded and replied, "Is there something important?"

Yasser sighed. "A bit too late. Miss Lumina has some duplicate Skeleton Tree roots and asked me to give them to Mr. Aelris. She said that once he’s done with his work and has time, she’d like to invite him to dinner."

"Never mind. Mr. Aelris really values you. You can hold onto these for now."

He paused, his eyes turning serious. "Hazel, honestly, you have the luckiest fate I’ve ever seen. But you need to know: you can only accept gifts directly from Mr. Aelris." His tone carried a clear warning.

He didn’t want Hazel doing something stupid, because that would make him lose Mr. Aelris’s trust.

Hazel nodded firmly. She felt that today was indeed the luckiest day of her life. But then she remembered how Aelris had asked about Succubus Alice right before leaving. Maybe he hadn’t left Heartspire yet after all.

"Mr. Yasser," Hazel asked, "can I take a temporary break from the mercantile? I think I know what Mr. Aelris is planning to do."

Yasser’s face showed a hint of hesitation.

Everything was moving too fast; he hadn’t even had time to apply for permission from above yet.

If he let Hazel leave now and it got discovered, the punishment would be severe.

However, thinking of how Aelris had spent three hundred units without so much as a frown, Yasser decided to take a risk.

He quickly removed Hazel’s slave collar and handed her a black hat.

"This will help hide your human identity, but it only lasts for a few hours. You must be back before it wears off."

"This is Heartspire, the hell of the weak. You should know that, whether you’re a human slave or just another creature of the Abyss, life is miserable. This isn’t something I can change."

"Nothing would change for other Abyss creatures either. But you’re in a much better position now. At least you have value, so you won’t be treated as food."

Hazel nodded quickly, pulled the hat down over her head, and left the box.

Yasser watched her go, staring at the now-empty room. He let out a long sigh, then walked over to the liquor cabinet and pulled out a bottle of strong spirits.

He poured a glass and drained it in one gulp.

The spicy alcohol burned his throat and stung his eyes red.

Trembling, he reached deep into his chest pocket and pulled out a piece of amber, no bigger than his palm.

Yasser stared at the thumbnail-sized Ratfolk fetus trapped inside the amber, letting out a guttural, beast-like growl from his throat.

"I’m sorry... Dad just had bad luck. I never found anyone like Mr. Aelris. If I had, you wouldn’t be dead like this."

Whether Ratfolk, human, or another creature of the Abyss, in Heartspire, the weak and the rootless always met the same fate.

Either you died like trash, or you became food.

He took a deep breath, straightened his clothes, and adjusted his facial muscles into a polite smile before slowly stepping out of the box.

...

Outside Heartspire, the dark sky hung low over the district.

Compared to the prosperity and bright lights of the Inner City, this place felt suffocating and heavy.

Rubbish littered the streets, reeking of filth.

Succubus Alice dragged her heavily injured body toward her residence.

"Damn Yasser," she cursed, spitting on the ground. "He wouldn’t even pay for my treatment. If I wasn’t a succubus, that fat pig would have played me to death by now."

It was all because of that Slaughter Demon.

If not for him, Hazel—that bitch—would have been the one dealing with the pigfolk!

"Garbage, all of it garbage! They all deserve to die!"

"If only my talent were a bit better, I wouldn’t be stuck in Suncrest Mercantile forever!"

"I wonder what those two Demons are up to right now... I’m so exhausted. I just want to rest." Alice couldn’t walk another step, so she stopped to catch her breath.

Just then, several drunk, staggering figures suddenly stepped out of the shadows nearby.

Alice’s face went pale. She scrambled to her feet, trying to escape.

Just then, a tall, thin figure stepped forward. Raphael stared coldly at the drunk Demons and barked, "If you want to live, get the hell out of here!"

Alice whipped her head around to look at him.

"So you’re the one who wanted to harm the Slaughter Demon?" Alice narrowed her eyes. She slumped down to the ground.

Blood kept pouring from between her legs, yet her face remained numb.

"I saw that guy and that human woman named Hazel. They have a good relationship. I can help you," she said.

"But there’s a condition. You have to find one hundred of the filthiest, ugliest pigfolk to torture that human woman to death!" Alice’s eyes burned with pure hatred.

From the shadows, Aiden slowly reached in and pulled out the Abyssal Flame Demon staff.
