Chapter 27: Chapter 27: Why Did Annie Look So Much Like My Son When She Was Little

Mrs. Sterling collected her thoughts and walked over with a smile.

"I know a thing or two about jade—these two Peaceful Coins look a lot alike, but they’re actually quite different. Even the places they’re from aren’t the same. Julian’s looks a little better."

Everyone knew Mrs. Sterling was an expert in jade, so after hearing her say that, all of Silas’s doubts were put to rest.

He let go of Julian Prescott’s hand, a bit disappointed, and nodded at Chloe Nash.

"Dr. Nash, you shouldn’t have gone to such trouble."

Chloe smiled. "Just a little token, to thank Mr. Prescott for saving my life."

Lucy Rhodes looked as if she’d just discovered a jaw-dropping piece of gossip, her eyes wide as she stared at Silas.

"Bro, when did you ever save Dr. Nash? You two seem pretty fated, huh."

Silas shot her a glare. "Hurry up and take Dr. Nash inside."

Lucy grabbed Julian’s little hand, smiling. "Julian, let’s take Dr. Nash over there to play, okay?"

Julian nodded excitedly again and again, pulling Chloe Nash away with him.

Watching this scene, Stella Sterling was so jealous she could barely stand it.

Wasn’t Chloe Nash just some powerless little doctor? Why did Silas and his son treat her so well?

She walked up to Silas, looping her arm through his, smiling. "Brother Silas, I’ve called you these past few days, but you never replied to me."

Silas quietly slid his arm out of hers, elegantly polite: "Sorry, Julian dropped my phone and broke it, haven’t fixed it yet. Miss Sterling, if there’s anything you need, you can contact my assistant."

The dignified Prescott Group CEO’s phone was broken and apparently unusable until it was fixed.

This was no different from him saying he was allergic to apples.

He just didn’t want to be in touch with her, that was all.

Stella Sterling was boiling inside, but nothing showed on her face at all.

She just smiled and said, "No worries. From now on, if I want to find you, I’ll come here. It’s a perfect excuse to bond with Julian."

Silas didn’t respond, and instead walked toward Chloe Nash.

When she saw him walk away, Stella finally let her emotions show.

She stamped her foot angrily. "Mom, what’s really going on between Silas and that doctor? He only has eyes for her, won’t even look at me, keeps saying all those nasty things. I don’t think he wants a marriage alliance at all!"

Mrs. Sterling was quick to comfort her: "Don’t worry, honey, I won’t let Chloe Nash ruin things for you. That spot as the Prescott Family’s future daughter-in-law is yours—let’s go find your Uncle Prescott. He’s your father’s old friend and will definitely help."

——

Back at the Prescott Family house again, Chloe Nash’s heart was tinged with bitterness.

In the past five years since she’d left, she’d returned here countless times in her dreams.

This was her warm second home.

Grandpa Prescott treated her like a real granddaughter, and, worried she’d be lonely, had Lucy Rhodes move in to keep her company.

She’d had her best memories here, but also had the past she never wanted to recall.

Silas Prescott was always a golden boy in her heart, and the place he stood was somewhere she could never reach in this lifetime.

But back then, Sienna Paxton was still like a moth to a flame, drawn relentlessly to that light.

She crashed so hard she could never turn back.

Thinking back to all this, Chloe Nash smiled silently to herself.

All the tangled love and hate between her and Silas ended five years ago.

There wouldn’t be any more emotional ties between them from now on.

Lucy Rhodes took Chloe Nash and Julian to the banquet hall for some photos.

Julian, who usually hated getting his picture taken, was unusually excited today.

He tugged Chloe Nash over to take photo after photo.

But he still felt something was missing.

Suddenly, his bright black eyes landed on Silas Prescott not far away, and he immediately trotted over on his small legs.

He grabbed Silas’s hand and pulled him back.

Seeing this, Lucy instantly understood what he meant and called out.

"Bro, come take a group photo with us."

As soon as she heard that, Chloe Nash immediately ducked to the side.

It was a family photo—they should take it, she, an outsider, shouldn’t be in it.

Besides, Julian’s mom might misunderstand.

Seeing her keeping her distance, Silas frowned slightly. "Dr. Nash, am I a tiger or something? You see me coming and have to dodge away?"

Chloe Nash smiled a little, her lips curving. "You’re a family—so I’ll stay out of the picture."

Silas gave a soft laugh in his throat.

He was about to explain when Jett Sterling strode up to Chloe Nash, not at all politely, and waved to the photographer.

"Hey, man, take a photo of the two of us."

Chloe Nash tried to slip away, but Jett hooked his arm around her shoulders.

He leaned in and whispered by her ear, "We’re old classmates, can’t even take a photo together? Or do you still have lingering feelings for me?"

On hearing that, Chloe Nash rolled her eyes at him. "Narcissism is a disease too, you know."

Jett chuckled low. "Then can you cure me?"

"I can’t—you’ll need to see a psych specialist."

The photographer was a pro; while Jett was whispering into Chloe’s ear, he snapped several candid shots.

And praised, "These are great—really natural, and you both look amazing."

Jett lifted his eyebrows at him. "Send them to me later."

Seeing all this, Silas was so mad a vein popped on his brow.

He instantly pulled out his phone and sent a message to the photographer.

[Delete those photos. Otherwise, not only will you not get paid today, I’ll blackball you in the industry.]

Seeing that message, the photographer felt a chill run down his neck, like an invisible knife was pressed against his throat.

He discreetly deleted those shots right away.

No way he’d risk offending a client like that.

Silas saw the photographer give him an ’OK’ gesture, and his lips curled in satisfaction.

He looked at Jett, cool and composed: "Are you done? My son wants to take a photo with Dr. Nash."

Jett shrugged, not bothered: "If it’s a group pic, count me in."

He led Chloe Nash up to Silas, even making a point to stand between them.

Julian’s plan was foiled; he puffed his cheeks, big dark eyes glaring at Jett.

Silas chuckled. "Sorry, looks like my son doesn’t want you here. He’s the star today, so I have to let him decide."

Jett tousled Julian’s hair: "Uncle’s so handsome—you really don’t want a photo with me?"

Julian wouldn’t budge, shaking his head vigorously.

Lucy Rhodes couldn’t help but laugh. "Young Master Sterling, sorry—you’ll just have to stand aside and not block our light."

She straight-up shoved Jett out of the way.

Then she stood beside Chloe Nash and made a heart gesture with her hands.

No matter how you looked at the photo, she was definitely the extra.

Silas held Julian in his arms, Julian had his arms around Chloe Nash’s neck—the three of them looked just like a family.

When the photographer counted ’one, two, three,’ Lucy had a quick idea and jumped out of the frame.

The photo was left with that cheerful little trio.

Lucy couldn’t help but marvel out loud: "What a beautiful family!"

When the photo session was done, the photographer was tweaking his camera, when a cold, deep voice sounded above him.

"How much did Silas pay you? I’ll pay you ten times that. Give me that photo you just took."

The photographer shook his head nervously. "He’ll blackball me."

"And you think I wouldn’t?"

Neither of these big shots was someone he could afford to offend, so he restored the photo from the trash and sent it to Jett.

Chloe Nash followed Julian Prescott into the living room.

The little guy grabbed a photo album and ran over.

Chloe Nash asked with a smile, "Are these your baby pictures?"

Julian nodded vigorously.

Lucy Rhodes put her arm around Chloe’s shoulders. "Dr. Nash, get ready for a treat. This album has our little master’s naked pics, and he never shows them to anyone, not even me!"

Chloe laughed. "Really? Thanks for trusting me. Come on, let’s look together."

She picked Julian up and together they turned the pages.

It was Julian’s artsy shots from baby to now, every special occasion had a few tucked in here.

In every photo, the little guy was super serious, rarely smiling.

But even so, that cute face was irresistible.

Chloe Nash doted over the photos as she flipped through them.

"This one’s gorgeous—looks just like a little prince."

"Those eyes—absolutely charming. Makes me want to kiss you."

Hearing her praise, Julian broke into a wide grin, showing off his tiny tiger teeth.

With his chubby little hands, he helped Chloe turn the pages, one by one.

From Julian at age four, then three, then two—

The more Chloe looked, the more anxious she felt. Why did she see her own son’s face in Julian?

Was it just because they were both Silas’s kids, so they looked alike?

Finally they reached the last page, a photo of Julian at one month old.

And he was freshly bathed, totally nude.

Chloe Nash saw that picture and her heart clenched suddenly.

Why did that baby look so much like her son?
