Chapter 926: Chapter 963: Return

The President of the Corporation felt somewhat entangled in contradictory emotions at that moment.

Mabel Quinn glanced at the phone’s location, noticing Kyle Kinston’s current position was rapidly moving, implying he must be in a car.

She decided to give him a call. It wasn’t long before he picked up, but his voice sounded different than usual.

"Sorry, I left earlier. I need to return to Falling City for a bit. Are you finished there? I’ll have someone pick you up," he said.

"No need, I’ll return to the residence on my own. But why the sudden need to go back to Falling City?" she asked, confused. This seemed like a spur-of-the-moment decision, as he hadn’t mentioned it before. 𝕗𝚛𝚎𝚎𝐰𝗲𝗯𝗻𝚘𝚟𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝕞

"Something came up suddenly." he explained, "I’ll be back as soon as possible. Don’t wait up for me tonight, you should go to sleep,"

"Alright," Mabel replied, feeling an inexplicable sensation lingering in her heart even after the call had ended.

She couldn’t shake the feeling that his sudden need to head to Falling City was related to Francine Howards’s abrupt appearance.

After a quick trip to the supermarket for some groceries, Mabel took the bus back to Kinston’s residence and cooked herself some food.

Without him, the residence felt empty and cold all of a sudden. At night, Mabel remained in the bedroom without a hint of sleepiness, unable to stop pondering his rushed trip to Falling City. What was he going there for?

What exactly happened? He had just been discharged from the hospital a few days ago, with an injured shoulder, yet rushing about... Confusion and concern filled her mind. She didn’t know how long had passed when, suddenly, she heard the sound of the door opening. She gasped, jumped out of bed, and dashed toward the door without even wearing slippers.

In her view was the familiar figure.

In an instant, the heart that had been hanging all along finally settled.

"You’re back!" she exclaimed, rushing forward.

Kyle was slightly startled, evidently surprised she hadn’t gone to sleep despite it being past midnight, "Why aren’t you asleep yet?"

"I couldn’t sleep with you gone," she confessed.

His gaze fell on her bare feet, and he frowned slightly, promptly scooping her up with one arm.

"Ah!" Mabel gasped, instinctively throwing her arms around Kyle’s neck, "Put me down, your shoulder is still injured."

"It’s no trouble. I’m not using the injured shoulder. Just stay still," he assured, carrying her effortlessly to the bed and carefully setting her down.

"I’m back," he finally said softly, his voice carrying an indescribable fatigue.

Not just his voice, but even on his face, there was a distinct exhaustion she rarely saw in him. Considering that afternoon he flew back to Falling City and returned late at night, and with his body still recovering from injuries, it made sense he was worn out.

"You could have stayed the night in Falling City and come back tomorrow," she suggested.

"I wanted to see you sooner," he admitted, as if only by seeing her could his heart truly be at ease.

"Was there something urgent that made you rush back to Falling City? Is it related to Francine Howards reaching out to you?" she couldn’t resist asking, her mind still lingering on the mystery since the afternoon.
