Chapter 54: System Reward Joji Grew Fond Of

Joji shoved a chair behind the door and barred it tight before he dared accept the system rewards.

He closed his eyes, bracing for pain, bracing for another change in flesh.

This time it was different.

When he opened his eyes, light burst across the room.

In the air before him, a thin chain of platinum began to form, link by link.

Each link was small, yet etched with detail so fine only the greatest craftsman could have engraved it.

Plants. People. Beasts. Rocks. A whole world carved into a chain.

At the end, a round lens of glass appeared, rimmed in black crystal.

It attached itself with a soft click, as if it had always belonged there.

Joji took the artifact carefully in his hand, holding it like it might shatter if he breathed wrong.

Then the system displayed its details.

{The Monocle of Sir Decipher}

{Rank: EX}

{Brief History: Wizen Decipher was the greatest appraiser ever to draw breath. Alas, fate, though it granted him a peerless eye for the truth of all things, denied him an heir.}

{In his last days, Sir Decipher fashioned this artifact and entrusted it to Sir Engine.}

{Wizen Decipher’s Last Words: Let my creation pass only into the hands of a man of my own measure, one who can perceive the true worth of men, yet has the cunning to profit.} 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶

{Abilities}

{See Through Material and Immaterial: By the rightful offering of aura and mana, a man may uncover the hidden truths of all things, living and lifeless alike.}

{Auxiliary Sir Engine Connection: It shall aid you, setting forth a true measure of what may be gained by the equipping, assimilation, or devouring of a chosen item.}

{Durability: Invincible}

{This item is bound to but one bearer, and the power it holds cannot be shared with another.}

Joji lifted the monocle, and fitted it over one eye. He focused on a simple intention, the ore bread he had been forcing down, wondering if it was unique enough to show him anything worth knowing.

The monocle answered at once. It pulled at his mana and aura with a familiar tug, like the portal did, only softer.

The consumption was low enough that he felt no strain, only a quiet awareness of something drawing power.

{Item: Bread with Crushed Copper}

{Taste: Bitter}

{Details: Cooked within brick ovens of Loui Village.}

"Wow. That’s so particular," Joji muttered.

Curiosity bit him hard enough that he could not sit still. He headed straight for Daisy’s study.

Joji knocked, waited only long enough to be polite, then cracked the door and slipped in.

Daisy pursed her lips at him, but she had work to finish, so she forced herself to look back down and keep writing.

Joji did not help. He stood there and stared at her with the monocle, intensely enough that she began to squirm, shoulders tightening, pen pausing mid line.

"Joji," Daisy warned without looking up.

He only leaned a little closer, eyes narrowed, studying her like she was a puzzle.

Then the monocle answered. A new window slid into view.

{Here are the several paths of knowledge upon which you may set your sight.}

{1. Abilities and Power Level}

{2. Current Emotions}

{3. Gears and Equipment}

{4. Biography} {Rank F to Rank EX access available.}

Joji was curious about her emotion first, so he thought of seeing that, making the intention clear on her mind. Then three displayed showed itself that made her dumbfounded.

{Daisy Everhart’s Current Emotion}

{Masochistically Excited}

{Her wits are thrown to sweet disorder, as eager dread and forbidden longing mount within her at the thought of another private tryst.}

{Deep Love}

{She dreams of a life joined with yours, and of children who might one day bear your likeness.}

{Absolute Trust}

{Her trust in you is absolute. She would place even her life in your hands without hesitation.}

Joji felt warmth after seeing it. The monocle was a game changer, yes, but that was not what made him feel lighter.

It was the plainness of it. No guessing. No second guessing. No pretending he knew what Daisy felt when he could not be sure.

He had not known how deep her feelings ran. The Monocle of Sir Decipher said it without mercy.

If it said so, then that was how she felt.

Joji stepped close and leaned to her ear.

"Have a healer sweep you before dinner," he whispered. "Then come to my room."

Daisy’s breath caught, but she did not pull away.

Joji straightened again, the thought already shifting. He was curious now, in a different way.

He wanted to know how strong Daisy truly was.

{Daisy Everhart’s Power Level}

{Pinnacle of Rank-3 Mage}

{Element of Wind Mastery}

{Element of Fire Mastery}

{Element of Earth Mastery}

Joji watched the new window settle into place through the monocle, and something in his head went tight.

A memory that was not his own, yet lived in his bones anyway.

Vicario Academy of Knights and Magician. Their third year, the last year.

Daisy had vanished for an hour, long enough for panic to turn into rage.

Joji had searched until his throat went raw from calling her name, until his boots had worn grooves into stone halls.

He found her in a knight’s room.

Five squires, boys with the same uniform as him, had her cornered.

Her clothes were torn at the shoulder. Daisy kicked and spat like a wild thing, eyes red, refusing to fold.

Joji remembered the moment his vision went red.

He did not argue. He did not plead. He broke them.

He left five bodies on the floor that would never walk right again, bones ruined in a way that could not be undone by apologies.

Honor, graduation, the highest praise the academy could offer, none of it mattered after that.

He took Daisy and went home. From that day on, he trained like a man chasing a ghost.

His only breaks were eating, drinking, and sleeping.

The memory faded, but the ache did not.

Joji stepped close and hugged her from behind, careful and firm.

"Daisy, do you remember our time in the academy?" he asked softly.

The heat in Daisy’s expression died at once. She lowered her head.

Her fingers tightened around her dress as if the cloth could hold her together.

She had blamed herself for years.

She had kept it locked away because Joji never spoke of it, and silence felt like condemnation.

Joji felt her tremble.

"I didn’t move on from it," he said.

Daisy’s eyes watered. She swallowed hard and said nothing.

Joji held her tighter.

"You know why," he continued. "Because there is nothing to move on to. If I was given the chance to protect you again, I would do it again. Even if I was given a hundred chances. I would choose you every single time."

The words loosened something in Daisy. A thorn she had been living with finally shifted.

In this world, women were taught to swallow their anger and call it manners.

Confrontation was labeled disrespect unless you carried power in your own hands.

Daisy had feared that truth would make Joji turn away.

Instead, his arms stayed around her.

"I changed, Daisy," Joji said. "If it’s only the two of us, then let’s be honest with each other."

Daisy hummed, tears still clinging to her lashes, but her eyes curved into a small crescent smile.

Joji wiped her cheeks with his thumb, until her breathing steadied.

Then the old curiosity returned, stubborn as ever.

Joji wanted to see more. More windows. More truths.

More of how people looked when stripped of the stories they told themselves.

He left Daisy to her work, quiet now, and went to Rizz.

The donkey sat on a bed with a book in his hooves, reading like it was the most normal thing in the world.

"Yo. Lil Rizz, sup," Joji greeted.

"Yo. We gonna go somewhere?" Rizz asked, clearly bored.

"Not yet," Joji said. "Still, it’s better if you train in actual knight arts. What do you think?"

"Okay, that would be cool, but when do I start? Like, right now?" Rizz said.

"I’ll tell the folks over their. Don’t worry, I got you." Joji assured.

"Cool. Thanks."

Joji stared at Rizz, wanting to know what Rizz felt about him.

{Rizz D’ Donkey Current Emotion}

{Awed Admirer}

{Joji, whose hand had touched near every venture, was the very mark of his envy. He wished to live as such a man lives, and to prove as stirring and capable as he.}

{Anticipation of Adventure}

{Rizz D’ Donkey had no taste for idleness. He hungered for another battle, another venture into the unknown, another journey upon the road, for such things had been beyond his reach in his former life.}

{Curiosity Concerning Your Ability}

{He wished to learn how great your strength truly was.}

Joji went to Alaric next. The man was still sleeping, but what Joji saw when he inspected him made his face sour.

{Alaric’s Current Emotion}

{Absolute Trust}

{His trust in you is absolute. He would place even her life in your hands without hesitation.}

{True Friend}

{He would do whatever you asked of him, so long as you but gave the word.}

{Unspoken Desire}

{Alaric, having shared his bed with both men and women alike, bore feelings for you that he would never dare confess.}

"Fucking knew it," Joji scowled.
