Dungeon of Niflheim-Chapter 759: Beware of the skies (2)
759 Chapter 759: Beware of the skies (2)
"What the fuck is that!?" Loudly bellowed Frost as he covered his ears with both hands.
The roar that reverberated across the region was so loud and so heavily laced with aura that blood dripped from his ears, just the monster's voice alone was akin to a sonic attack.
Kiba who was desperately flying with all he had literally froze for a second or two. His muscles fully contracting in response to the overwhelming fear and bloodlust contained with the mighty roar.
The bird shaped monsters that were hounding after the two of them were no different, their shadowy forms halted in position as all colour drained from their faces and the blood held within their bodies ran cold.
The whole dynamic changed in but a single moment, a desperate running, a chase of prey was brought to a standstill.
Fear, unmitigated fear and oppression.
Even Frost with his mid B-rank strength and lofty background felt his skin tremble, his heart skip several beats and his confidence waver.

The threat contained in that mighty roar was overwhelming, the being responsible posing an extreme danger to his life.
Knowing full well thanks to Maya's dedicated training that wallowing in such emotions would only hasten his demise Frost sharply bit his tongue, drawing blood and allowing the pain to bring him back into focus.
[Kiba!!] Using their soul connection he loudly roared his partner's name and strongly pinched an area near his rear to bring him back to reality.
"Grrr!" Feeling a sensation of pain Kiba instinctually growled before realising the state of his body. Cold sweat covered his fur, and his mind felt heavy and exhausted.
[Fly away now!] Frost spoke again through their connection as he readied himself for battle. His glaive [Wolf howling at the moon] was held in his right hand while chakra armour and magic was cast by his left.
Only a brief moment had passed since the roar entered their ears, but it was more than enough time for the situation to change.
Just as Kiba started to move once again, growing the distance between them and the bird monsters a massive shadow, easily spanning over 30 metres loomed over from on high.
Frost looked up and saw wings, thick feather covered wings being harmlessly buffeted by the ongoing blizzard.
This was by far the largest creature he had even seen.
The monster's body was a fair bit smaller in comparison to its wingspan but even so from its sharp talons to its large protruding mouth the creature was easily 10 metres tall, much larger than even the Skarpion leader who by this point was shivering in abject fear along with the rest of his kin.
This was the creature that swallowed his son, that had terrorised all the terrestrial tribes since before he was born.
The king of the skies, the mighty Artic Zu.
The massive Zu flapped its wings, conjuring up its own storm as it lowered itself from a higher altitude, curious to know who or what dared to infringe upon its territory.
Its deep black eyes first roamed over the Skarpion tribe, a foolish little group that occasionally forgot their place in the food chain.
Seeing the fear in their eyes and the frozen state of their leaders the Zu remembered when it devoured one of their stronger kin. A taste and texture that was quite sublime if memory served.
"Grumble" The beast's stomach loudly rumbled in response to such nostalgia reminding it how long it had been since it last feasted on true prey.
Feeling a change in the Zu's perception the oldest, the leader of the Skarpion tribe forcibly shook off the pressure and roared in its racial tongue.
[Descend into the nest!] Knowing that only death awaited any who remained on the surface the old Skarpion dashed to where his granddaughter was and dragged her into the nearest crack.
Following his loud roar and forceful actions the rest of the Skarpion tribe madly ran for safety and within just a few seconds the icy surface that was previously covered by their kin was once again bare, leaving only the dead carcasses and still wet blood as proof of their existence.
"Tsk sharp little bastards." The Zu clicked its tongue as it loudly spoke, frustrated by the fact that a juicy meal had so easily escaped.
Its attention was thus drawn to the group of bird like monsters who unlike the Skarpions were still overwhelmed by their fear. The 8 creatures simply stared at the massive Zu like deer caught in headlights, frozen by the mere presence of a natural predator.
Not wanting to lose out on another meal the Zu once again flapped its wings and almost instantly it appeared above these 8 creatures, half of which were B-rank while the other half were at the peak of C. A powerful group but unfortunately in face of the mighty Artic Zu they were nothing but snacks.
With a vicious rend of its talons, and a few bone crunching bites from a mouth lined with hundreds of razor sharp teeth the group of 8 flying monsters were eviscerated, and devoured. The sound of such carnage was so chilling that many relieved themselves in response.
Frost meanwhile was silently urging Kiba to keep flying at fast as he possibly could while covering every inch of their bodies in durable armour.
His heart was beating a mile a minute, his head filling with dread and his every instinct screaming for him to run not fight. This was a monster, a vicious, hungry monster that he had no hope in beating with his current strength. Their only hope was to run and pray that they reached the secret entrance to Niflheim before its abyssal gaze was drawn to the two of them.
The longer they flew the more he understood the danger of the skies. With his senses pushed to the limit Frost was able to sense the many creatures that called the air their home.
So many peak C-ranks and B-ranks that the threat of the Skarpions were a mere joke in comparison. Unnervingly however these powerful monsters didn't dare to linger or attack the fleeing Winged Glacial tiger and young Dungeon core.
The presence of the Artic Zu forced them all to keep a distance, none of them wishing to anger it and become its next meal.
Yes even creatures who were at the very peak of B-rank were refusing to attack, such was the threat imposed by the Artic Zu, a monster that had reached the A-rank.
Frost was no stranger to powerful influences, take his girlfriend for example, an S-rank prodigy who crushed an A-rank assassin into paste with a simple gesture or Oscar Runak the War Marshall of the War Ursa Battalion and Duke of the Icethorne fortress, a man who was only a single step away from achieving the same level.
Both of these existences could easily quash this Artic Zu, but Frost was not them and unlike Duke Runak and his girlfriend the threat posed to him by the Artic Zu was very real. There was no prior relationship between the two of them that prevented it from truly threatening his life.
Prey and predator was their sole relationship, nothing more and nothing less. A fact that Frost could feel clearly deep in his bones.
He was in extreme danger.
Crunch! Crunch!
As Frost resisted the spectre of death that continued to whisper temptations in his ear the Artic Zu chewed and swallowed the bird monsters that had foolishly chosen to remain in his presence.
"Not bad but not great either." The Zu complained as it pulled several bones from its mouth. Though they were of high rank it didn't mean that they tasted all that good and besides the Artic Zu had long become bored of the taste of avians.
Though it appeared as though it had completely forgotten about Frost and Kiba the Zu's senses were in fact constantly locked onto them. A situation Frost was painfully aware of thanks to the constant feeling of dread impacting his body despite the distance they had accrued.
The Artic Zu enjoyed playing with delicacies and thus allowed Frost and Kiba to momentarily escape while it focused on filling its once empty stomach. The bird monsters were merely nourishment while Frost and Kiba would be instead be something to enjoy, to savour.
"Hehehe let's start the game of chase then shall we." The massive airborne monster chuckled in an evil manner as blood dripped from its frightening maw.
With elegance and without any hurry the Zu flapped its wings, ascending in altitude until the point it could no longer be seen by those living on the surface.
The hunt, the true hunt was now on, and Frost knew it.
His gaze and senses were always focused on the actions of the Artic Zu and thus he immediately noticed the fact that it had disappeared.
'Shit!' He internally cursed, his mind thinking up possible methods of escape.
They could try and descend but knowing the look in the Artic Zu's eyes such a solution would likely be a trap. An A-rank had many methods in which they could prevent one from fleeing let alone the fact that the other tribes that called this area home would not welcome their intrusion.
It was very likely that the moment they landed a group of them would do everything in their power to force them back into the air, thus getting on the Zu's good side.
He still had the teleportation talisman that could send the two of them tens of kilometres in a random direction but that would likely worsen their situation. Enemies were on all sides, and they were being hunted by an A-rank monster, something in a completely different class than Bella and her frost giant cohorts.
Therefore there was but only one option, run and hope that they make it to the secret entrance in time.
Unfortunately the exact position of their destination was still unknown. Was it 100 kilometres away, 200, 15, slightly underground they didn't know.
Thus their situation was truly dire.
