Doted By The Regent King-Chapter 595: It’s Not Easy to Make Besties
Chapter 595: Chapter 595: It’s Not Easy to Make Besties
After exchanging greetings, they were about to head to Green Mountain Temple. Ping Caier took the initiative to share a carriage with Wufu, which would be good for a conversation.
"In that case, Mrs. Zhou, you come with me. Let the young misses talk amongst themselves," Madam Ping said, taking Madam Zhou’s hand.
Madam Zhou was only too eager for Wufu to interact more with people her age, so she nodded immediately and got into the carriage with Madam Ping.
"Sister Wufu, let us get on the carriage too," Ping Caier said with a gentle smile toward Wufu, intending to take her hand.
Wufu shivered as she was addressed as "sister," gave a stiff smile, let Ping Caier board first, and then, with the help of Purple Jade, took her seat. Before a lady, one must play the part.
Ping Caier surveyed Wufu’s carriage and a flash of surprise crossed her eyes. The carriage didn’t look like much from the outside, but inside, it was incredibly comfortable. There was even a small Huali wood table at the front, along with two or three short cabinets.
"Sister Wufu..." Ping Caier turned her attention back to Wufu.
"Miss Ping, you may just call me by my name, Wufu," Wufu interrupted her, smiling. "We are about the same age and equals; it is best to address each other by our given names."
Ping Caier’s brows furrowed slightly, but she quickly let out an amiable smile, "Alright, then you call me Caicai."
Wufu nodded.
For a moment, there was silence between them. Wufu took in Ping Caier’s plain clothes—she was in mourning. Though she didn’t wear plain white, her attire consisted of dark, unadorned fabric, with the exception of a few discreet patterns, giving her an air of subdued elegance.
"What does sister Wufu usually do at home?" Ping Caier broke the silence.
"I am an enthusiast of Jade Carving. I usually carve when I have free time," Wufu replied with a smile, and then asked, "How about you?"
Ping Caier’s face flushed, and she lowered her head, slightly embarrassed: "I... usually embroider my dowry, and I also help my mother with household affairs."
"Embroider your dowry?" Wufu was somewhat puzzled. She had never heard that in this era, one had to embroider one’s own wedding dowry.
Ping Caier raised her head to look at her, "Hasn’t Mrs. Zhou told you? A woman must embroider her own wedding dress and clothes for her husband, as well as socks and shoes for senior relatives when recognizing them; all must be made by herself."
Wufu’s mouth twitched slightly, and she said with embarrassment, "I come from a rustic background and am ignorant of such customs."
Ping Caier pressed her lips together with a smile, and chided, "Even if you come from a rustic background, you still need to embroider them yourself."
Wufu gave a few awkward laughs and changed the subject, "Have you set a wedding date then?"
Hearing this, Ping Caier’s expression darkened, and her smile faded, "I am still in mourning; I have two more years before I am out of it. The wedding can only be set for next year at the earliest."
"I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have brought up such a painful subject." Seeing the young girl’s crestfallen face and remembering that she had lost her father at a young age, Wufu felt an unusual pang of sympathy; after all, she was just a child.
Ping Caier shook her head with a smile, "It’s alright."
"Actually, it’s better to marry later. You’re still young; you’re just sixteen this year, right? I’ve heard that it’s a great ordeal for someone too young to bear children. They say that giving birth is like passing through Ghost Gate Pass; it would be more secure to wait until you are older..." Wufu trailed off, noticing the change in Ping Caier’s expression, and stopped talking. freёnovelkiss.com
Ping Caier’s face indeed went from red to pale, her eyes filled with panic as she looked at Wufu, and her embarrassment was indescribable. She bit her lower lip, unsure of how to respond.
She, a young lady who had yet to reach the age of marriage, was being talked to so bluntly about the matter of bearing children!
It struck Wufu then how different her upbringing had been from Ping Caier’s, likely making it hard for her to accept Wufu’s manner of speaking, and realising she might have frightened her. Wufu felt annoyed at herself, as making friends with ancient ladies was ever so tricky!
