Having given everything that needed to be handed to Madam Zhou, the rest of the items were to be organized by the maids, and Wufu was promptly sent off by Madam Zhou to rest.
Wufu made no fuss and headed to her own room, where the bed had been made soft and comfortable by the maids. She sighed contentedly, rolled around a few times, and quickly fell asleep.
When she woke up, the sky had already darkened; in the outer living room, the maids were whispering. Wufu coughed, and Purple Jade quickly came in.
"Miss, have you awakened? Did we disturb you?" Purple Jade asked as she fetched clothes to help her dress.
Wufu yawned and inquired, "What time is it now?"
"It is already a quarter past the Wu hour," Purple Jade glanced at the small clock and said, "Madam noticed you were still asleep, so she didn’t call you for dinner. She has saved some for you."
Wufu gave a grunt, quickly freshened up, and stepped out.
"What are you all doing?" The room was somewhat messy.
"Miss, we are arranging your boudoir. Does it look good like this? This Plum Branch was picked by me, the two prettiest branches from the tree," Jadeite said eagerly, hoping for praise, pointing to the plum branches put in a plum vase on the windowsill.
A delicate and fresh fragrance wafted in, and Wufu took a deep sniff—it was indeed crisp and fragrant—so she smiled and said, "Not bad."
Jadeite’s face bloomed with joy.
"You are all new here; rest for now and familiarize yourselves with the residence, without forgetting your duties," Wufu advised, sitting by the table.
Purple Jade and Jadeite exchanged glances and smiled, "When the Miss was resting, Sister Hongyu led us around the residence, and we also found rooms to settle in; we are not tired."
"The household is small; there’s no rush to familiarize yourselves," Wufu said with a smile.
"Yes."
At that moment, Hongyu had brought in the insulated food container and laid out the dinner on the table, while Purple Jade brought hot water for Wufu to wash her hands.
Wufu clicked her tongue and remarked, "If it continues like this, I fear I might be spoiled by you."
No wonder the young ladies of great houses, though only one person, are surrounded by a bevy of maids and old women. With everyone having their tasks and serving only her, naturally, she is pampered and delicate.
Wufu was joking, but she wasn’t entirely wrong; dependency leads to laziness, after all.
After a simple dinner, and hearing that someone from Madam Zhou’s place had said there was no need for her to go over for evening greetings, Wufu stayed in her own room, drinking tea while reviewing accounts and assigning duties to her maids.
To say she was drinking tea, it was actually floral tea; this was a blend prepared by Jadeite, reportedly beneficial for beauty and complexion, and better than other strong teas that might disturb sleep at night.
In Wufu’s own room, there was a separate ledger. In the afternoon, she had distributed several ledgers, each for recording items such as jewelry, clothes, utensils, and silver.
Listening to Purple Jade’s explanations, Wufu came to understand how harshly women of this era were judged. Even intimate clothing and jewelry had to be stored and recorded properly. If such items were to be handed to men, especially, it would be a scandal that could ruin her reputation.
Thus, in Wufu’s place, caution was imperative; everything was recorded, so in case something went missing, there was a ledger to refer to and determine what was lost or misplaced.
Ah Jiu had said that Purple Jade was adept at stewardship, and Wufu, now listening, truly believed it. Purple Jade managed everything meticulously, and compared to Madam Zhou’s attendant Qiu Xiang, she was more than a match, perhaps even surpassing her.
This made Wufu very curious; if Purple Jade had not come to her side, where would such a talent end up serving in wait for a high-ranking person?
