Chapter 354: Why did you create them?

After hearing Wayland’s explanation, Casper couldn’t feel anything like anger. However, a bitter taste spread through his mouth as he wondered about that situation.

’This guy didn’t have the intention to bring me here at all. He was just trying to do what he thought that was right for this District. He wanted to avoid that they destroyed themselves because of this war. It’s still irresponsible to him to do such a thing, knowing that a human being would have been brought here and forced to leave his past life behind. He had no other choice, though.

’Anyway, something that I can’t understand at all is his will to help everyone. Does he like this district that much? If so, why is he making these masks, aware that they will take the freedom of his own folk? It doesn’t make too much sense to me...’

Casper still had no clue about Wayland’s motivations. The way he talked made it seem like he was fond of his folk and that he was willing to do such irresponsible actions if it meant to save them. But it didn’t seem like it. Otherwise, he wouldn’t be creating these masks with so much effort, always trying to bring it to its perfect version.

The soldier didn’t feel malice coming from that man. Anyhow, he still was willing to be as careful as he could when dealing with him. After all, he surely was strong, Casper did not doubt it. He was someone capable to get skillful enough to deceive people masterfully.

"Hey, Wayland..." Casper called him in the middle of his explanation. Now, The Forger was going on and on about how he got the soldier to that world and the implications of his actions. Nonetheless, Casper had too much on his mind to care about anything that he was saying at that moment.

"I was wondering now, why did you create these masks? Why did you begin to make them? You seem to have noble reasons behind your actions, regarding the safety and future of your folk. But I know exactly what happens when someone wears one of these."

Wayland stopped his explanation and looked at the soldier with sad eyes. He didn’t have any excuses for that question, and he was not the type to lie, anyway. In the end, he decided that it was time to tell someone why The Forger, one of the most powerful men of that district, made such a thing to his own folk.

"Listen well, Casper. Maybe that’s something that you can relate with us when looking back at your own world and analyzing some past events regarding to their development through time. That’s something that tends to happen in any society, after all."

The soldier nodded, crossing his arms and leaning his back against the big screen of the computer.

"What I am about to talk to you is something that you probably never heard of before. After all, nobody ever talked to you regarding the history of the district, particularly the era when the masks didn’t exist yet."

Casper gasped once hearing that.

He had been reading a lot of history books since he got in District 42 and occasionally asked people. He even tried to make Yanke research some things but he didn’t have success.

The history of District 42 was very well hidden, for some reason. He didn’t know why, though, and the more he researched about it, the more confused and cornered he got.

"Indeed, no one ever talked to me about it. I thought that it was lost in time or something. It’s hard to hide all the vestiges of history, after all. Someone would need to struggle for real to do so."

Wayland nodded his head, sighing.

"You got exactly on the right point here. They did struggle hard to bury history. What District 42 has in his past isn’t something worth to be remembered, or so they said."

Casper frowned hard at that phrase. There was information missing.

"Who are they?"

Wayland didn’t want to go so deep in that subject, but it seemed that the White warrior would grasp every detail that he omitted.

"The Royal Family. Not King Leif and Queen Freya, exactly, but past generations of Kings and Queens, whose names are lost in all this time that passed and never will be remembered again. I mean, except from one person, and this person is the King that helped to skyrocket District 42 development, but also was the reason why the masks were born. A curse and a blessing at the same time. A devil and an angel.

"The legacy of this King is so great that he was renamed after several years governing District 42. They named him Baldur, one of Odin’s children. The greatest and baddest king in the world..."

...

In very distant times, when the masks were yet to be created and Wayland was still developing his genius mind that soon would become one of the most brilliant ones of the district, a king was standing on a hill and looking to his kingdom.

Monarchy was always the government system that dominated District 42, and at that time its tradition was still ingrained in their culture completely. The folk was yet to call that place a district.

The king had red hair and beard. The look on his face wasn’t that of someone present at that place. Whoever looked at it would have the impression that he was constantly looking at the future.

After all, people always said that Baldur was the man ahead of all men. It wasn’t a lie, not the least. The talent of that young king was noticeable. The folk couldn’t complain about him at all, nor the Council of Jarls of the General Court. Nobody had something against him, but everyone was frightened about what was passing on his mind.

People would bet a lot of different things.

Maybe the king was thinking in conquer more lands.

Maybe the king was aiming to go to the war that was happening.

Raising the taxes was a possibility as well...

But all of them were wrong. Nobody could ever imagine how his plans would change that kingdom completely.
