District 42-Chapter 320: Broken symbols
Rurik and Freygar rushed across the support base, passing through the crowd of people who were going to where the commotion was happening. Everyone was worried. Most of them were thinking if the Frelsi came to attack that base as well, even though they had already taken the Castle.
’But that can’t be possible at all! The Frelsis weren’t meant to know where this support base is, and soon we were planning to move on in order to not let them notice it. Is their communication network so good like this? We just made this base in a hurry, it’s been a short span.’ Rurik was as worried as everyone else.
He preferred that this commotion was because another Aesir totally destroyed inside and outside due to a fierce fight. An attack would end with them for real this time.
Whatever the enemy imposed against them, Rurik would be able to save those people. He couldn’t die, after all. However, he didn’t know how many he could save when another battle erupted.
Freygar, just in case, already had a weapon on his hand that he borrowed from one of his troops. His two pistols and knife were gone during that battle against Camilla, after all.
’If something is about to come, I am prepared. After all, my clone machine is still working. I will do my very best to hold them, outnumbering the enemies. If that’s me and Rurik, we can surely do it!’ Freygar still didn’t know whether it was an attack or not, but he kept his hands near weapons attached to his waist, just in case.
They both arrived where the mass of people was crowded and mumbling something to themselves, looking around in despair.
When they saw those two Aesirs walking toward that place, they immediately opened the way for them quickly, showing what was in the middle of that crowd.
Casper was kneeled on the floor, looking down. The veins of all his body were popped out, his skin was reddish, and he seemed to be struggling to keep himself from moving or even breathing. His body was thoroughly wounded, some more serious than others, but those didn’t seem to be the cause for his struggle.
Rurik was impressed that the White warrior could still be standing with that much harm in his body. However, that impression was gone as he analyzed his condition and guessed the reason for such resilience.
’Berserker... You surely don’t play to lose, White warrior. Nonetheless, you have no idea about the struggle you will need to pass starting from now. I am still impressed, though. You are still under the effects of the drug, but your mind seems to be ok, you are not trying to attack anyone here, nor screaming like an animal. I don’t know what you did to control yourself like this, but I hope you stay the same until the effect is gone.’
The man looked to the figure beside Casper. As he thought, it was Canute. The man was lying on the ground. He didn’t seem harmed in any way. However, anyone could see that he was exhausted. The man couldn’t even lift his arm.
Freygar felt pain on the left side of his chest. Rurik couldn’t bear to see Canute like that, but Freygar felt it harder than him. After all, he saw that individual grow since he was a kid. The Cloned Aesir considered him as his nephew.
’I myself treated him when he was in need. He might have been pushing himself since the start to save the others. I don’t know what you did, but you are the type of stubborn person that, despite being all worn, would do something that is useful for others. I bet you were a decisive factor.’ He thought, closing his eyes.
"For Odin, where is the Princess?" Freygar murmured, tired of those feelings that befell him. He was tired of that suffering. He was tired of that defeat. Everywhere he went, he just saw something to make the atmosphere get even more melancholic.
Casper seemed to hear him and raised his head, looking straight to Freygar. He lifted his arm and pointed to one of the beds, which those people were also surrounding and gazing at.
Freygar and Rurik slowly walked toward that bed. Even though they didn’t want to do it, everyone forced themselves to open space for those two.
Rurik was in front, so he could witness Vick’s state right off the bat. His legs shook once he saw that. He needed to back away some steps but got interrupted when his back hit Freygar who was behind him.
"Let me see it, Rurik." He said, calmly. "Let me see what my... what OUR failure caused, please." 𝕗𝗿𝕖𝐞𝐰𝗲𝕓𝐧𝕠𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝐨𝚖
The Immortal Aesir let him pass without any protests.
Freygar walked in front and gave a look toward the woman that he swore to protect at all costs, even if his life needed to be used for this. Her disfigured face, her beaten body, the unsteady breath, and the deep wound on her back; everything got printed on his mind like photography.
Freygar finally let his pride aside, kneeling on the ground and laying his forehead on the edge of the bed’s mattress.
The Aesir yelled in pain as if he was the one who was receiving all those blows. People around began to cry with the Aesir.
"I am sorry... I am so sorry. I couldn’t... I couldn’t do anything! I am so weak, I am so impotent... Why couldn’t I do it this time!?"
His desperate words echoed through the support base.
The healers, Ridires, and citizens who were there, even the wounded ones, walked toward that tent where everyone was gathered.
Once they realized what was happening, they began to cry and lament together with the others.
That day, they saw one of their major symbol of authority, the Princess, nearly dead. Also, they witnessed their symbol of protection and strength, show that he was feeling as weak as they were.
The people living in the Castle had everything that they believed shattering in front of them.
