District 42-Chapter 149: What changed
It was being a week since Casper and his friends started to work in remodeling Halden along with the Princess and her subordinates.
As Casper was a layman in the architecture of that world, and how it worked exactly, he measured that, to change that much of things they were planning, it would last a whole month. However, it took just one week for them to finish everything, and even now the soldier was flabbergasted because of their techniques and technologies that made all the process much easier.
To begin with, he didn’t even know if they could be able to fill the hole he did between the Third Lab and the fifteenth floor. However, they made it as if it was a kid’s game.
The White warrior was trying to figure out how those processes worked, but he had no clue, and when he asked for someone to explain to him, his mind would just explode in confusion. He surely would need a whole lecture of some days to even understand the basics. There were concepts of architecture and civil engineering that were still to be born in Casper’s world, this if they really came to be discovered someday.
He was still amazed by how they could pull through everything so quickly, and now he was on a short trip throughout the new construction along with Alfar and Olaf, so they could take a look at the final results.
"Who would think that everything would be done so fast?" Casper commented, surprised.
"Well, that was just the expected... To be honest, they even lasted more than they should have been. Princess Vick got nervous with them. If she was here all the time to maintain those guys working hard, things would be get done even earlier than now." Olaf explained, looking around the place.
In the superior level of the Third Lab, all the equipment and inventions that they were working on got apprehended by the Ridires. Those things were considered too much dangerous for society. The weapons were transferred to another base, where they would be destroyed... Or that was what the Princess said.
"Do you think that they will put an end to those things?" Alfar asked. They were inside the Search Block that they got stuck in before, and where they made that huge hole on the ground.
Now, that hole disappeared completely, and there were no traces of its previous existence. It was not just covered but filled inside, in a way that, if someone digs in the exact part where it was made, they wouldn’t find any flaws on the ground.
"Of course not," Casper answered him. "They will not show those deadly weapons to the public for a reason, and it’s not because they don’t want the citizens to get frightened. They will just pretend to throw it in the trash, but will probably keep working on it in secret."
Olaf shook his head, agreeing with Casper.
"I thought so, too. I am pretty sure that they are developing another laboratory now to keep up with those projects. I doubt that they will make another Halden, since the first try was just a mess, and at some point, another ’White warrior’ will appear there and make the same thing as Casper."
Alfar seemed to not care about those weapons, as long as something like Halden was not made again anymore.
They kept walking further inside the Third Lab, all the Blocks were re-designed and new equipment was arriving each day and fulfilling the different parts of the superior levels.
Those levels got expanded as well and were 50% bigger than they were, everything to settle lots of scientists working there. The reason as to why they choose to make it, was because the lower levels of the Third Lab weren’t exactly a laboratory now.
The new director of the Third Lab would be Amelia. However, she still wasn’t there.
The trio took the elevator and went to the lower levels after a check on all the superior levels to make sure that the engineer made everything as they ordered.
"You were a chemical, Alfar. What do you think about the Superior levels, also known now as the new Third Lab?"
"I think that’s great. The work conditions are better than before, the equipment isn’t illegal as the previous ones, and it has a basis to make truly beneficial researches, even though most of them will still be directed to belic power."
After the long wait for the elevator to arrive, its doors opened and they could get out.
"Ok, now, the lower levels, also known as Halden Treatment Center," Casper announced, walking through those less frightening and dirty corridors, without those weapons and strange human experiments anymore. Now it wasn’t exactly a laboratory, but a Center of treatment for people who got into the cruel experiments of Halden.
It was mostly the idea of Alfar, and he was responsible for planning everything around there. As it seemed, he was acquainted with other Center of treatments for different types of diseases, so he had what it takes to plan everything.
Now, the design of those levels was way more similar to one of a hospital. The Search Blocks were substituted for different rooms for treatment, procedures, and even researching. That place would serve for both: the assistance in the healing of those prisoners, and the research and craft for different medicines, treatments, and techniques to end with those tough conditions.
It wasn’t as big as the Third Lab above was, but had enough space to attend the 4 hundred or so prisoners that remained from Halden’s revolution, and to settle all the workers it would need for its projects and services.
"Although the princess said to you two to not be bothered by the construction here and that you could leave after the planning stage, you both stayed until the end, huh? Stubborn..." Casper said, while they were checking on each room destined for the patients.
"Of course, if we weren’t here, who knows how it would be? Our supervision was needed in the end, anyway." Alfar answered. He was being very detailed regarding that specific part of that structure. In truth, he didn’t care too much about the Third Lab.
"To be honest, I didn’t help at all, but it was good to follow how things happened here." Although Olaf was very insecure in his contribution, he was a smart guy, so of course, he was of huge help there.
Alfar led the way, while Casper and the ex-Jarl just kept walking behind him and helping with the check-ups he wanted to do.
"So, you will be taking care of here when it gets activated, won’t you, Alfar? You will be... hmm... the Director of Halden Treatment Center, right?" Olaf questioned.
"Yes, that’s right. With this place in my hands, I am sure that I can reach my goal. I will work every day restless until then. Now that I have the tools, I can’t slack. Medicine isn’t my specialty, to be honest, but being a chemical and studying it every day, I am pretty sure that I can get the hang of it." Alfar wasn’t insecure at all with his plans, and he was willing to indulge himself completely in it.
Both Olaf and Alfar had their own objectives. They wanted things and were prepared to fight for them. It was ironic how they were the ones worried about their future, since they were finally free, and the person who really ended up lost was Casper.
Seeing his friends trying hard and fighting for their desires like that, the soldier just came to a realization: He had no goals, purposes, or objectives. Since he entered that world, he was empty.
After that tragic year in the Yanke Forces, Casper was left with no purpose in his life at all. If he couldn’t act as a soldier anymore, then he would not be able to find happiness and feel useful doing anything else.
And he had brought that feeling inside his heart to that world. Until now, he was just striving to survive and settle in District 42, but what he wanted to do?
He was always thinking on something on the side, but he never questioned himself about this. It was always about his past life, his problems, the resolutions and plans for those problems, calculations, reasoning... But he never stopped to look to the outside and pay attention to his inside.
"Casper?" Olaf asked, and then he noticed that he was thinking about those things for longer than he expected.
The check-up was even finished, and they were already in front of Halden’s elevator.
"Oh, sorry. Ok, let’s do this..." He was impulsive at first because of his dumbfoundedness, but then he thought for a while. "Well, it will be hard to face them again after what we did... But that’s something we ought to do, I guess..."
Olaf and Alfar got pensive for a while, but they also were willing to face their comrades as well.
In an impetus of courage, they entered into the elevator and went to see the prisoners.
