District 42-Chapter 139: The escape part 3
Almost all the time until the superior levels had passed. The trio was still exhausted. They felt like those fifteen minutes had been only two.
Casper was the only one used to get short times of rest for great amounts of effort, so fifteen minutes for him were quite a lot, although he couldn’t ignore the limits of his body and make it be 100% recovered just in this short period of rest.
The soldier was the first one to stand up and get prepared. He was not sure if there would be enemies waiting for the elevator to come, so he needed to be ready for a fight if needed.
The other two got the cue and raised from the ground as well, looking pretty unpleased to be moving again so early, but determined to finish it as soon as possible.
Casper was anxious for that elevator to arrive. Once they got into the superior levels, they would need just a bit more struggle and then they would be already in the outside world again.
His eyes were filled with hope and will. He was dreaming about that day throughout all those weeks, and all his efforts were directed to achieve it.
"In the lower levels, I could even have a reason to retreat and maybe give up. But now that I am just some steps away from what I want, I will not back away for nothing in this world..."
He turned to Olaf and Freygar, who were standing behind him and waiting for the elevator to get at their destiny.
"Ok, we will be going for this. I don’t know how many enemies there will be on the other side when we arrive at the superior levels. Besides, I am not sure if the scientists of there are also trying to stop the Ridires from killing us."
They seemed to be apprehensive about the outcome of that situation.
Casper said about the possibility of the same ambush they were planning before be made again in there as if it was just another problem, but that was not something so trivial.
Just as the last time, they all could die if Amelia didn’t do it in the right manner. The scientists from the superior levels weren’t too attached to the ones from the lower levels, and Halden, so it was unlikely they would care if subjects from them would be executed.
That was something that worried both, and although he didn’t show it to them, even Casper couldn’t help but feel that same anticipation from before.
Unfortunately, he was pretty sure of what would happen. Even with Amelia’s influence, no one could convince the scientists to risk their careers and lives for something they didn’t believe or worried about.
This time, the trio just had themselves. They should trust each other’s abilities and find a way out of that problem.
There was no way to the superior levels instead of the elevator. And there wasn’t another choice except to face what was coming.
The elevator finally arrived, and Casper’s mind kept in a rush to sort out what he could do to escape from that situation as well.
Different from the other elevator, that one just opened when they pressed a button inside there. Otherwise, it would be closed, except if someone outside pressed, instead.
However, Casper knew that they would wait how much time it was needed for them to get out. They wouldn’t do such a hasty movement.
"Relax, man. It has to have a way to survive here. If we could do it the first time, we can do it now..." In a short period, Casper saw himself again with just one choice on his hands, but that would mess with all the plan.
"Hey, Casper. There is a way now, right?" Olaf asked, and the soldier nodded, searching into his clothes and finding something that he let aside for too long. He almost had forgotten about that thing, and it would be something decisive in the end.
However, if he used that, there wouldn’t be a way for them to escape from the superior levels. They would be stuck at the same place forever.
"Casper... I know that it’s not time for pressure, but... If you have something, whatever the thing, that can make us keep going forward, even some more steps, it’s time to use it. There is no need to economize resources, nor to discard possibilities because of fear.
"Also, you will find a way to overcome the consequences, right? That’s what you do, anyway." Alfar slapped him in the back as if he was paying back Casper for every time he did such a thing with them.
The soldier shook his head again, more energetically. He still didn’t know what to do afterward, but Alfar was right. As long as they could keep alive, and with more choices appearing in front of them, they could sort it out for sure.
Casper pulled from his clothes something that Olaf, nor Alfar had seen before.
"What’s it?" Olaf asked.
"A Detonator. I have been keeping this thing with me for quite a while... I never thought that it could come in hand at this time. I am glad I kept it.
"Anyway, pay attention. We will not resort to fire guns now. Pick your knives. We will need to go with the good and old close combat."
Alfar stopped Casper before he could walk towards the panel to press the button.
"What it will detonate, Casper?"
"Let’s say that this Laboratory will suffer a blackout, and it will probably affect the Indigo energy supply, so..." Once he heard his response, Alfar couldn’t help but get amazed by what that soldier had prepared for the Third Lab.
It was difficult to find someone as perceptive and prepared as Casper out there. Be it a coincidence or not, he still was prepared for that situation either way.
Alfar drew the knife that was in his waist. Sharp objects left Deamhan quite agitated, but it was just as worse as a fire gun. Olaf followed him.
Casper walked towards the panel and pressed the button to open the elevator’s gates. At the same time he spotted all those Ridires standing in front of the exit, he pressed the button of the detonator as well.
It took some time to happen, and the soldier was pretty sure in the beginning that it had not worked out.
Once all the lights out there turned off and the bright red of the Ridire’s weapon got weakened, Casper kicked the ground, drawing his knife at the same time and running like crazy while cutting everything that appeared in front of him.
The soldier seemed like lightning passing through the Ridires, his muscles working tirelessly to wipe the enemies before they could react and retaliate.
His action needed to be the swiftest and precise as possible. He couldn’t engage in battle with anybody. If that happened, he would be caught by those dozens of Ridires. Also, if he could work hard to clean the way for his comrades, they wouldn’t need to struggle that much, nor he worries about them.
Pass through the corridors was the hardest thing that Casper ever did. If his ankle was as bad as it was before, he surely would have died.
At some point, the Ridires started to retaliate, so he needed to be agile in dodge while running, and counterattack with a clean cut that would knock them out and let him pass quickly for them.
The minor mistake could cost their lives.
However, the more Ridires he knocked out, the more of them seemed to appear. Their numbers increased so much that it came to a point where just kept running around the laboratory, without any course, and fighting like crazy, wouldn’t be worth it.
The trio entered into one of the search blocks, hiding inside there. They were more advanced than the Ridires, so they could outwit them for the time being.
"This will not work, Casper! We can’t... We can’t keep up like this..." Olaf said, gasping.
Alfar did not protest about that matter, but it was clear that he wasn’t too happy with the outcome of that situation.
Casper had been searching for something that could lead them to a different exit from the laboratory, but he couldn’t find anything. It seemed that the only way to get out of there was through the elevator.
Mess up with the electric circuits of the Third Lab kept them alive for some more time, but, as he predicted, it also left them without options.
"In the situation we are in now, we have just a few alternatives. We can keep searching for another exit, but end up getting too tired and be caught. We can keep hiding and just defending ourselves, waiting for something to happen, but we will not be 100% sure that something will appear..."
He got pensive for a second, then his eyes shone.
"When alternative A, B, or C doesn’t work... choose the one that’s not listed..."
