Chapter 129: Playing dirty

For a brief moment, dozens of different thoughts crossed Freygar’s mind and he got desperate. His heartbeat was going crazy, and his breath, unsteady. With his eyes widened, he looked in disbelief at what that man had done until now.

Everything was just a big trap since the start. The Aesir cursed himself for not being able to notice the obvious. Those split groups of prisoners were quite difficult to deal with. His troops had passed for hard times with them.

For numerous times, he felt like a rat inside a trap, going back and forth and just finding dead ends. He himself had questioned a lot of times how they could have disabled and messed with all the network of Halden; also, how they could have such harmony and synchrony, being as coordinate as soldiers, and knowing their position in all those maze-like corridors, even without any communication.

However, the thing was that all this time Casper could be in touch with them, tell them what to do, and see everything inside the prison. He was controlling the apparently disabled cameras, talking with all the prisoners, everything through that master key inside his pocket.

"That’s an item that one cannot carry so lightly... Even an Aesir has difficulties having one of these. How could he find a way to take it!?" His mind couldn’t accept what was going on. That was just illogical.

Nonetheless, Freygar wasn’t the type to get desperate and hopeless so easily. Through years of training and struggling, his mind was sharp enough to maintain its coolness no matter the situation. That man could somehow make him nearly snap, but it wasn’t difficult to ignore.

"If you keep your mind working calmly you will pull through this situation and fulfill your mission. Casper was fooling everyone with this master key, and that’s it. There is nothing you can do now."

He let his flabbergasted expression behind and returned his focus totally on the White warrior.

Casper was still standing in front of him, but not paying attention. The Aesir was hoping to take advantage of that distraction to end with him, but stopped when Casper raised his hand high and then shouted to his comrades.

"Retreat!" His strong voice echoed through the corridor, and all the prisoners started to disengage immediately.

The Ridires got so surprised by that turn of events that nearly froze just like Freygar.

"Don’t stop give chase after them. We need to execute each prisoner that’s still in Halden!" The warriors answered to him with a warcry as always and gave chase after the prisoners.

Freygar was going to prevent Casper to run away, but the man was already running, following his comrades.

The other Ridires were still ignoring him, finding it safer to let him for Freygar than to have troubles in the future because of it.

"Why!? Why are they doing this? Running away after calling reinforcements is a movement so..." Suddenly, he had a realization, and stopped himself to chase after those prisoners.

"Stop! All of you! Stay still and get ready for the worst now!" The warriors answered as quickly as possible, wielding their guns to use them to defend themselves at close range and gathering together.

They were expecting that reinforcements would come to retaliate them, and since the energy was disabled it would be almost certain that it would be a close combat battle.

They waited patiently for the outcome of all that fuss. It was frustrating when they saw the last prisoner run away from that corridor to another, but they couldn’t disobey Freygar’s orders.

"They are coming..." Freygar thought, maintaining his anticipation as low as possible to prevent himself to do idiotic things.

"Stay still, the time is coming!" He spoke this time, carefully looking to all corridors around him and trying to sort out from which one the reinforcements would arrive.

The march in the background kept going, and the rhythm was making their hearts almost explode, inpatients.

Then, a lot of prisoners appeared in both extremes of the corridor. They had serious looks on their faces, and also seemed very confident about what they should do.

"These helpless prisoners could get pumped up by a brat like him? A guy with, what? 22 to 25 years? That’s amazing..." Freygar needed to give his compliment to the soldier. He was exceptional when dealing and gaining respect from those people, and even more for being able to make all of them have organization and coordination, which was two flaws, among a whole bunch of others, that those inexperienced inmates had.

That guy all alone could pull through it.

"Well, it doesn’t matter. They can bring how many people they want to, we will end up with all of them. I have the more trained and equipped soldiers..." That was what the Aesir thought, at least until he saw what those prisoners had in their hands.

They didn’t throw their improvised weapons away. And those weapons weren’t Indigo-based, they were made for Frelsis, after all.

Just when Freygar realized it, the reason why all those prisoners ran away popped up in his mind.

"If they stayed here, they would be caught by the attack of their own comrades... They weren’t running away from us, they were escaping from their friend’s fire!"

Freygar looked at his back, where his device was hanging.

"I will need to resort to this again... That’s the only thing I have with me that stocks a bit of energy... It might get defections afterward, but it doesn’t matter. I will do what I can do for now and fulfill my mission."

The prisoners organized themselves in each extreme of the corridor, getting into position to shot, and then waited for the orders. 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚

Who said it was Casper, who was behind those lines of shooters with the other harmed prisoners.

"Fire!" He ordered and so the prisoners did, pulling their triggers all at once and shooting at the Ridires.

Out of desperation some of the warriors threw smoke grenades there, covering the whole troop with a gray and dense cloud of smoke.

However, it was useless. There was a whole bunch of inmates using guns against them. It would be just a matter of time until all of them got shot.

Casper was behind all that fuss but could see what was happening there.

He was kind of sad that his fight against Freygar ended with such an outcome, but there was nothing he could do about that. The safety of prisoners was the top priority there, not his personal frustrations.

Even the Aesir could forget about that thing and fight for his mission. If the soldier couldn’t do the same, then he would be the weakest one there.

The fire just ceased when the bullets and electricity from the improvised guns ran out.

The prisoners looked to each other hesitantly, asking if it had ended. They started to low their guns and whisper among them.

Their conversation got more and more excited as the time passed and there was just that dense smoke covering the center of the corridor.

Soon, they were celebrating. The relief in their hearts was so big that they couldn’t even bear it anymore. Their faces got brightened by the sight of a victory without much loss.

All of them knew that it wouldn’t be possible to end with that escape if they could not defeat those troops.

Nevertheless, Casper wasn’t celebrating and didn’t show a hint of happiness on his face.

Inside the cloud of smoke, he could see vaguely that blue light was shining inside there. A tone that remembered Indigo energy.

He double-checked his guns to make sure it wasn’t recharging and confirmed that they weren’t being provided with energy yet.

"There is something off here... That vague blue light, the smoke being used all of a sudden... What the heck are they doing?" The White warrior would love to tell to his comrades to begin the fire again, but they were running out of ammunition. It was impossible.

"Hey, everyone!" He called without looking back and approaching that cloud of smoke slowly and carefully. "Hey, everyone!" He tried again in a louder voice.

The scenario was getting quieter and his comrades kept just staring at him while he moved towards that cloud.

"Don’t low your guards now..." The prisoners felt the danger as well and were about to raise their guns to prevent that the worse could happen, but it was already too late.

From that dense and gray cloud, the Ridires started to appear one by one, rushing towards the unprepared prisoners.

Their bodies were well trained, and some of them were using exoskeletons or prostheses there, which raised even more their speed. In a matter of seconds, they could get into close range and retaliate.

Casper was going to instruct and help his comrades but got stopped when someone assaulted him.

He got a punch right on his face and was sent flying some meters.

"Why are you so calm, White warrior? We still have some issues unsolved." Then, Freygar got out of the cloud of smoke... Though not just one, but two...
