Disaster Apocalypse: Farming, Family, and My Hidden Secret Space-Chapter 76: Buy Buy
Chapter 76: Buy Buy
I didn’t expect this father and daughter, who looked like they were dressed modestly, to be so willing to spend money.
Seeing them spend money made the attendant’s attitude even better. He hurried to serve them tea and asked them to wait a little.
Soon, the table was filled with dishes. The aroma was something, and the presentation looked quite good.
Seeing her father’s expression of distress that seemed to make his teeth ache, Hua Jin burst out laughing and quickly served him a bowl of lamb soup.
"Dad, since we’re here, let’s enjoy it. What’s the point of earning money if not for ourselves? If we’re out of money, we can earn more. Since we’ve already ordered, we can’t waste it. Let’s eat quickly."
Hua Jin placed the lamb soup in front of her father with a smile, earning a playful glare in return.
"You!" Hua Chengtian looked at his daughter helplessly. These days, "You" had almost become his catchphrase for her.
"I know you’re doing this out of filial piety. You want me to eat something nice, but even if we have money, we need to plan how to spend it. Let this slide for now, but don’t order so much next time."
Hua Chengtian said these words, which were the sternest he’d ever spoken to his daughter.
Hua Jin nodded. Any nod was the right one anyway.
She understood that parents loved to nag, and she particularly enjoyed this process, sometimes reminiscing about old memories.
There was happiness, there was pain, there was despair, and there was a sense of persistence.
"What are you thinking about?" Hua Jin snapped back to reality as her father flicked her forehead playfully.
"You told me to hurry up and eat, but then you spaced out yourself. Hurry up before it really gets cold." Hua Chengtian picked up some beef with his chopsticks and placed it in his daughter’s bowl. He didn’t know what had been on her mind earlier, but that fleeting sadness still tugged at his heart.
"Okay," Hua Jin quickly stuffed the meat into her mouth, her eyes glimmering slightly beneath her happy exterior.
Papa, Mama, did you send me here because you saw how lonely I was?
Rest assured, I’m doing well now, with family who love me just like you did.
Hua Jin thought to herself.
Hmm... As she chewed the marinated beef, Hua Jin’s eyes lit up, and any trace of melancholy vanished.
The marinated beef tasted really good, so she quickly picked some up for her father as well.
"Dad, it’s really delicious, you should have more."
"Hmm... the fish maw is also particularly delicious... Dad..."
The father and daughter ate more than half of the food on the table. Overall, this restaurant’s dishes were quite good, and they were very satisfied, except it cost nearly two taels of silver.
The leftovers were packed and taken back to their room, where they stored them away in the space.
After returning to their room and requesting hot water to wash up, Hua Jin was urged by her father to enter the space and rest.
Seeing it was still early, Hua Jin returned to her space and began the mechanical work of digging and turning the soil.
After several days of hard work, the front yard was completely plowed, and a small portion of the backyard was done as well. There was hope to finish everything in a few days.
Then she could start planting. Grains like rice and wheat were the highest priority, as were potatoes and sweet potatoes. They would also plant various vegetables with the remaining space.
After working for an hour, without even having time to shower, Hua Jin dove into the warehouse to look for seeds.
She had stored a good quantity of wheat and rice seeds, more than enough for the few acres in the space.
She then took out most of the potatoes and sweet potatoes, allowing them to sprout on their own, with plans to plant them in the ground later.
With the seeds sorted and ready, Hua Jin felt at ease. She took a quick shower, set an alarm, and threw herself into her bed for a deep sleep.
Hua Jin woke up to the alarm the next day. Considering her heavy tasks for the day, the idea of lingering in bed quickly disappeared. After washing up, she made a simple breakfast to take out of the space.
The porridge was ready-made, cooked by her grandmother and mother the day before and stored by her in the space. Hua Jin made some pancakes with eggs and flour, poured a small bowl from the fridge’s aged jar, along with some small pickles and boiled eggs, setting a sumptuous table.
Knowing that the egg pancakes were made by his daughter, Hua Chengtian felt an overwhelming sense of joy!
After all, this was the first time his daughter had ever made food with her own hands, especially just for him... How could he not be happy?
Hua Chengtian almost single-handedly devoured the egg pancakes and drank a bowl of porridge, along with the favored egg his daughter peeled and the delicious, spicy sauce she brought out. It was so spicy and flavorful that the more he ate, the more he wanted to eat, until he was truly full for the first time.
After finishing the meal, the bowls and chopsticks were directly stored back into the space. Despite having witnessed this scene several times, Hua Chengtian’s heart still couldn’t help but be stirred each time he saw it.
As daylight brightened, they checked out of their room. The father and daughter, along with the well-cared-for yellow ox, set out from the inn, heading straight for the few stores as suggested by the attendant.
Just like in Shanggu Town, they strolled down the street, buying up more than half of the stock of coarse salt from every shop they entered. As the salt was loaded into the carriage, Hua Jin stored it into her space.
Continuing this way, walking and stopping along the way, they spent half a day. They traversed nearly every street in the county, entering any store they found, spending over sixty taels of silver. Without realizing it, they had stored over two thousand pounds of coarse salt in the space.
They hadn’t planned on buying charcoal, but after learning that the price in the city wasn’t much higher than in the town and that stock was ample, Hua Jin’s hoarding instincts kicked in thinking about the cold winter. She encouraged her father to buy a significant amount.
Since they had the space, they didn’t have to worry about dampness or other issues, no matter how long it stayed.
Initially, Hua Chengtian was firm about not buying any, reasoning that the family already had enough to last the winter. However, his daughter was very persuasive, and he realized she was right: storing it in the space meant no worries about moisture, and with their extremely cold winters, it was better to be prepared. This was called "being prepared is being safe."
In the end, they couldn’t resist buying it. They collected over ten thousand pounds of ordinary charcoal from different stores, spending more than twenty taels of silver—enough to last the family several winters.
Even so, spending so much silver at once did make Hua Chengtian feel a bit heartache.
What came next made Hua Chengtian feel even more distressed.
He never knew his daughter could spend money like this. Anything that wasn’t available in the town, if it was useful or tasty, was bought without hesitation, and she even dragged him to a fabric store. Hua Chengtian couldn’t stop her, especially since her wheedling was irresistible.
They bought fabrics in bulk for spring, summer, autumn, and winter.
The problem was that each type they bought started at two bolts, making the shopkeeper so happy he couldn’t close his mouth. The shopkeeper was so pleased that he even gave them quite a bit of leftover scrap fabric as a bonus.
You should know these scraps could be pieced together to make clothes for a child, and usually the shopkeeper wouldn’t part with them like this.
Could the shopkeeper not be happy? Hua Jin not only bought several bolts of seasonal fabric but also helped him dispose of a few damp bolts left from the spring and autumn seasons. Even at a discount, those fabrics would be even harder to sell next year if they weren’t sold now. Overall, it wasn’t a big loss.
Another ten or so taels went out in an instant. Hua Chengtian wanted to pay, but his daughter beat him to it, taking up half a carriage load, which was then stored in the space.
