Demon Tamer's Ascension-Chapter 8: Sign Up
"Victor, only I can see this system, right?"
"Yes, only the user can."
A wild sneer ran across his face as he stepped just in front of the Inn’s door. He didn’t want his expression to be like that around Cassie, so he waited for it to fade away.
Ring!
The door slowly opened wide as Alex walked in, shutting it right back.
Alex somehow held a smile that spoke more of warmth than evil, "Hey, Cassie."
"O-oh Alex!" Cassie spoke elegantly, "For some reason, Miro told me not to come and that the Inn will stay open!" She blushed, "You just felt like the right person to tell this to, I’m sorry!"
Alex waved his hands back and forth, "Oh, no need to apologise, I’ll take that as a compliment."
Cassie held that same gold coin Alex gave her, "One night is only about three coppers, one gold will finally convince my mom to let me go to the Beast Tamer entrance exam. I truly can’t thank you enough. Wait until my mom hears about this." She said, happiness enravled her.
"Entrance exam...?" Alex paused on that thought, "Forgot about that, when does it happen?" He asked.
"In about a month." Cassie responded, "Since today is December 6th..."
Her eyes gleamed, rolling her fingers down one by one.
"So, it would be on," she tapped her jaw, "January 4th." Cassie declared confidently.
"Perfect," then, another one of his curiosities popped up, "How do I sign up?"
"You want to sign up as well?!" Her voice sounded more like a beautiful chant than a scream, "Well, why don’t we go out sometime, so that I can show you?"
Alex nodded, "Sure, I don’t mind that."
At this point, he thought about how jealous others would be, and that made him want to go out with her even more.
"You player," Victor’s voice came back.
"Shut up."
Cassie hung Alex’s room keys just in front of him, "Here you go, room 01. We don’t get many customers for sleeping in either way, so it’s good that you’re here."
Alex took those keys. "Thanks, I’ll get to sleep now, it’s getting late."
"Okay!" Cassie bent over respectfully, nodding up and down.
As Alex turned, he began walking up the stairs, one by one. The wood kept creaking below; clearly, it was old. The material was old and hadn’t been replaced in quite a while now.
But from behind, Alex’s back, Cassie held this one expression, one that no one, but herself, had the chance to see.
A smirk, a malicious one, an evil one...
Yet, Alex, even with his intellect, would’ve never guessed where that grin was coming from.
As he slowly walked up, he felt a soft rub on his shoulder.
"The little pup’s waking up," Victor said, "Let’s see how you handle him."
"That’s no worries, I already have a plan."
As Alex continued to walk up the stairs, he thought of something drastic, something that might change the fate of where his potential really lies.
"Intrigue me, Alex," Victor announced, "What’s this plan that makes you so confident?"
"Well, Victor," Alex chuckled, as he finally reached the second floor, standing in a wooden hallway with a wooden roof above, "I’ll tell you in just a moment."
"Stop edging me," Victor whispered, "Just say it."
"Don’t forget Victor," Alex snapped back, "I haven’t pried into your past yet, so don’t try demanding things you don’t deserve."
Victor sinisterly giggled, "Well, who do you think it is giving you all this potential power?" He asked.
Alex continued to walk forward. There were only five rooms. Two on each side, and one at the very back, which was designated for him. It had a sign, labelling it as ’room 01,’ exactly what Cassie had told him earlier.
Click.
Alex inserted the key into the doorknob and twisted it right after.
"I’m the one who has to work to gain more power." He finally answered.
Victor sighed in disbelief.
"An ungrateful bastard, you are."
Alex slid the door open after rotating the door handle ninety degrees to the right.
"Ungrateful?" Alex wondered out loud, then laughed the second after, "A Demon calling me ungrateful? A sight I would’ve never guessed would come true."
Victor didn’t respond, "Alright, then I’ll stay quiet while watching you do your thing." He said.
"Good boy-"
"What was that?"
Alex scratched his head awkwardly, "Thank you for your understanding, my oh so generous partner." He said, robotically.
"Anytime. Now, do your thing."
"You don’t have to tell me twice."
Alex exhaled as he slowly walked into his room, the little Grey-Wolf still asleep, but slowly regaining consciousness.
The room itself was honestly not that pretty, but not at all dirty or ugly. It was exactly what you would expect. Modern wood all around, including the mattress foundation, which had a table to its right, with a beautiful, thin table lamp that illuminated the entire room.
No roof lights, no nothing, only that. It had no wire connected to an outlet, so it was clearly working off batteries. On the top right corner of the room, opposite to where his white comfy double-bed mattress was, was another dark-wooden door with a ’washroom’ sign at the top.
"ArooOOOeeeewh." The Grey-Wolf yawned, but then went back to sleep once more. 𝕗𝕣𝐞𝐞𝘄𝐞𝚋𝚗𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹.𝚌𝕠𝚖
Alex went to sit on his bed, but before that, he placed the pup in the middle of his room. It was still calmly asleep, making inhaling and exhaling noises every second, but it was almost like a deafened whisper, so it didn’t bother anyone at all.
"I’ll go get myself washed, and as soon as I’m done."
He paused, standing up, then took off his clothes before opening the washroom door.
"I’ll tame him."
Victor popped back in, "Taming it? So you already noticed it, haven’t you?" He grinned.
"You just confirmed it to me, thank you, Victor."
"Huh?!" Victor thought to himself out loud, "Ah, I see what you did there. It doesn’t violate the ’assistance’ declaration on any of the rule books as long as I’ve been deceived, so it’s fine." He stated.
"Time to silence myself once more." Victor added, "Let’s see how you pull this off."
