Chapter 4: The Final Bite

Alex rolled across the snow, dodging another one of the Grey-Wolf’s claws. He wrapped his hands around the small wolf, aiming his sharp nails right at the creature’s neck. The creature fell unconscious in shock. And, for some reason, the F-Rank Grey-Wolf paused, almost like it had been enveloped in sudden thought.

"So, I was right," Alex’s grin widened, "this is your child. You must be a mother."

The Grey-Wolf stayed silent, "Awo!"

Alex’s nails now touched the soft fur of the unconscious pup. He picked a small, sharp wooden branch from his surroundings and clipped it onto the pup’s neck. 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶

"Grrr!" The wolf stayed in one position, swiping its claws in the air, angered by her little child being taken hostage.

Clearly, it had a parent, and Alex had just outplayed it.

"Choose one." Alex whispered, "You or your child? Which one do you want to live?"

The Grey-Wolf’s face suddenly felt uneasy, almost like it understood every word Alex threw at it.

The wolf slowly began to walk forward, its gaze completely numbed by the sight of its vulnerable child. The beast raised its neck into the air and tossed Alex a sharp wooden stick on the floor, sharp enough to slice it down fully.

This was a clear sign from the Grey-Wolf, ’come kill me, but in return, let my child be at ease.’

Alex’s gaze darkened. He respected the wolf’s decision. And he felt bad himself; he felt terrible at his actions. Alex didn’t feel good about what his actions had caused, but doing something for the greater good shouldn’t involve pride.

"I see," Alex walked up towards the Grey-Wolf harshly, as it gazed towards its child deeply, almost like they had an emotional touch, even though its child was unconscious.

He made sure to hold the unconscious pup closely towards him, so that the Grey-Wolf wouldn’t try anything fishy.

"As much as I feel sorry for you," Alex blinked maliciously, "I still think I’m in the right."

He took the branch that the Grey-Wolf tossed him, swiftly aiming it high into the moon; the luminous glow from the moonlight above radiated across the terrain.

"Awooooo!" The creature let out one last noise, and to Alex, it was more than just that.

He felt the reasoning behind this. ’If you betray your promise, it’ll haunt you to death.’

"I won’t," Alex declared, "even though I’m a bad man, I’m not cruel." He lowered his gaze, shortly stabbing the tree branch into the beast’s throat.

Blood gushed out as it fell onto the layered snow, soft and deadly.

"Congrats, lil bro." Victor’s voice rang through Alex’s head once more.

"Where the fuck were you?" Alex harshly asked; he wanted answers before moving on.

"Calm yourself," Victor nervously squeaked, "I’m not allowed to interact with the user upon accepting a quest. So you have to learn to manage on your own."

"No worries," Alex replied, moving forward, "I’m good for now."

He stared at the pup that lay down unconsciously on the floor, and studied it disturbingly.

"Don’t make me feel bad," he tried looking away, but looked back, and then let in, "Fine."

He walked towards the cute little thing, crouched down, then picked it up from the snow into his palms.

"You sure you want to do this, Alex?" Victor asked, already comprehending what Alex was about to do.

"As I said, I’m a bad guy, but I’m not cruel."

Alex put it on his right shoulder; he didn’t want to carry the burden of having it in his palms.

"There you go," he petted it softly, "time to actually go to Beastfall Capital."

Alex tried emphasizing the ’actually’ clearly, showing that he’ll have no more distractions along the way.

"By the way, Alex-"

"If it’s about the system, then I’ll check that out once we book a room. It’s freezing out here," Alex cut Victor off smoothly.

"You sound a little down right now," Victor added, "Sad about killing the mother? Don’t be, sacrifices have to be made."

"I know that," Alex responded sharply, "let’s just go find a home for now, for this little one as well."

He stared towards the pup that slept soundly on his right shoulder.

Alex felt bad, truly, he did. Even though he didn’t want to, he felt guilt. But he’s a man who will do anything as long as it benefits him. And he had to kill the wolf, or else he would’ve died.

But the entire trip in the snowy night towards Beastfall capital still made him think about his actions, even though he tried not to; it always climbed back to his skin.

...

"Finally here," Alex proclaimed, "let’s get a room, then something to eat."

He stood in the middle of what individuals would call ’The Centre,’ also known as the Town Square, where everyone usually meets up before going on dates, adventures, or just any plans in general. Here is where everyone would meet and get connections; it was in the middle of the entire capital. Beastfall capital, to be more specific.

The centre was stretched wide, with concrete filling the floor below, and a waterfall statue right in the middle. Lights illuminated from the ground, sharp, thin yellow straps of it, and had a touching feeling.

The snow continued to shower down, which explained why nobody was out in public, trying to sell things, not even the street vendors.

Alex soon passed through different stores, including clothing shops and others that sold a variety of goods. Ones that included clothes, shops that sell adequate equipment, a small chapel dedicated to deities, restaurants, and neat little convenience stores. Everything was there, but all Alex wanted to stay at was an inn for the day.

"There it is," he walked over to a wooden scratched door with windows on the sides of it, and hard brick walls covered the entire place.

It had a sign over it, ’Beastly Inn.’

Knock. Knock. Knock.

Alex knocked rapidly, gradually freezing up as the minutes passed by.

Then, the door opened wide, and a bell noise came from within the cozy place.

"Welcome to Beastly Inn, what may I get for you today-?!"
