Chapter 38: Chapter 038 Such a Shameless Person

Simpson’s mother remarried many years ago, and he lived with his father, a middle-aged man with a wooden expression.

His face always looked tired, and he hardly spoke with anyone.

“Please accept my condolences.”

Amanda and Roger, one after the other, presented flowers.

“Wait a moment.”

Suddenly, Simpson’s father spoke up; he looked at Roger, who was standing behind, “Was it you who chose to distract the beast’s attention, thereby creating an opportunity for the others to escape?”

...

Roger nodded.

The middle-aged man’s wooden face flashed a hint of warmth, “Thank you, although he still didn’t survive in the end.”

“But you tried.”

Roger didn’t know what to say for a moment, so he just nodded and gave a consoling smile.

“Have a look around.”

“If Simpson were still alive, he would have wanted you to come over as guests.”

After completing a simple procedure, Amanda and Roger started looking around. Simpson’s house seemed rundown from the outside, but the interior decoration was decent, with many parts retaining a clear sense of the era.

On the wall beside the stairs hung some old photographs, the earliest of which could be traced back to the beginning of Simpson’s family.

“This man is Sherman.”

Amanda pointed to a middle-aged man in a group photo on the wall and said to Roger.

The Sherman in the photo was impressive; he was dressed in a neat suit with a serious expression, and his gaze seemed to penetrate the picture, where Roger also found Adeline’s figure.

“Mom?”

Amanda let out a surprised gasp upon discovering her mother’s image in the photo.

“When was this taken? I’ve never heard my mother mention having any association with Sherman.”

“Maybe it was just normal work interactions.”

Roger offered an explanation and then pointed to a red figure in the photo, asking, “Who is this woman?”

Amanda frowned, “That should be Miss Huda; she is the mayor of Baytown, but in recent years, as she’s aged, we hardly see her in public anymore.”

“Let’s go, there’s nothing here. Let’s check out Simpson’s room.”

Amanda whispered quietly to Roger after they had looked around.

Simpson didn’t have many friends while he was alive; Amanda and the others were almost his only friends.

His room was crowded but not messy, with books neatly arranged everywhere. Amanda handed a color to Roger; he kept watch at the doorway while she quickly scanned the room.

The guests were all gathered in the downstairs hall, not noticing their subtle actions. Amanda searched for a while but didn’t find any clues.

“There’s nothing here.”

She said, somewhat disappointed.

“Let me take a look.”

Roger walked into the room.

“If I could activate Hunter’s Perception now, it would be extremely convenient for finding clues.”

A fervent wish rose in his heart; Roger almost longed to become a real Demonic Hunter right then, albeit the intense perception ability was mainly due to an extreme enhancement of various senses.

If he were to practice step by step, even without becoming a Demonic Hunter, the powerful perception would still help him discover many inconspicuous clues.

After preparing the Spirit Communication Water, Roger had begun using it, though due to the short time, the effects were not yet very apparent.

“Someone’s coming.”

Just then, Amanda’s slightly tense voice came from the doorway.

Roger placed the book back in its spot and quickly adjusted his expression. He turned around, and the figure had already appeared at the door.

“It’s you guys.”

A gentle voice came through, and Sherman said with a smile.

“Mr. Sherman.”

Amanda greeted with a nod, then Sherman nodded and turned his attention to Roger.

He stepped forward and extended his hand, “I’m Bob’s father. I haven’t had the chance to thank you in person for what happened that day. If it weren’t for your courage, Bob might not have had the chance to come back alive.”

Hesitating for a moment, Roger’s hand lightly touched the tip of Sherman’s fingers.

“It was nothing,”

he answered in a formulaic manner.

“No, young man, you did well,”

Sherman slightly shook his arm and then withdrew his hand.

“Do you have time this weekend?”

“I hope to have the opportunity to thank you in person. How about Saturday morning? I’ll send someone to pick you up.”

“You and Bob are both young. You might have a lot in common.”

Sherman extended the invitation proactively, his tone getting slightly forceful, unconsciously. An average young person would probably have accepted, if only to save face.

But Roger clearly was not average.

“No need, sir.”

“I hate socializing.”

“If you really want to thank me,” Roger’s gaze lingered for a moment on the family crest on Sherman’s collar and on the wristwatch he was wearing.

“Perhaps you could generously reward me with some money,”

Roger said without changing his expression.

Standing to the side, Amanda’s jaw almost dropped. Not only did you decline their invitation, but you had the audacity to ask for money!?

She was realizing for the first time that someone as thick-skinned as Roger existed. In the eyes of the red-haired girl, the image of Roger that had been built up collapsed completely, leaving only the face of a man demanding money.

Sherman clearly didn’t expect to be declined so directly. His cheek twitched momentarily, but he quickly regained his composure.

“Haha.”

“What a straightforward young man.”

“Youngsters always feel that they don’t have enough pocket money.”

“But I like your honesty. Don’t worry, I’ll have someone send you a check later.”

Sherman nodded, “I have other matters to attend to, let’s talk another time,” he said and then turned and left.

No sooner had he left than Roger felt a gaze upon him as tangible as substance. He turned his head and saw the red-haired girl glaring at him fiercely, “That was very rude, Roger.”

“How could you…”

“Why not?” Roger said nonchalantly, “I saved Bob; he is his only son. It’s only right and proper that he rewards me with some money.”

Amanda was left speechless.

“Well, I think it’s just not right anyway.”

Because of the incident with Mar and the General Motors vehicle parked on the road at night, Roger had almost certainly linked Sherman to Ivy.

Concerning the mysterious event, he wouldn’t dare accept the invitation without absolute strength. Before that, collecting clues and keeping a low profile were vital.

If there was indeed a connection between Sherman and Ivy, then he must be part of the Three Holy Spirits organization. Reflecting on the symbol he saw in the flames during the ceremony Amanda and others performed, Roger was certain that the attack was connected to the Three Holy Spirits.

But on the day of the incident, Bob was also at the scene. Even if Sherman were mad, he wouldn’t risk his own son’s safety, would he?

Roger thought to himself.

He felt he had grasped some leads but lacked key evidence.

Could it be that in Baytown, besides Ivy and Sherman, there were other members of the Three Holy Spirits?
