Chapter 317: A Simple Minded Man

Mallory tried calling Thane a few more times, but her calls failed to go through. She sent messages but it was all to no avail. After a few unsuccessful tries, she decided to ask Matthew for help and contact his brother, but he ended up letting her know Thane had previously blocked his number as well.

But that was not the only thing he was concerned with. "Care to explain just what it is you and my brother have been talking about all this while?" he asked, stretching out on the bed.

Mallory stared at him through the reflection of the mirror as she blow dried her hair, "It’s regarding the business, Thane was the one who gave me the hint that Kayden is handling the business in his sister’s place. We were able to use that bluff earlier to seal the deal with him."

Matthew was still not pleased, "I think it’s fine and all, but you should know when to stop, I don’t want to owe that man any favors."

"That man is your brother, and he happens to be very influential, you should be taking advantage of this more." she argued.

"You say it’s for business, but do you honestly expect me to believe that you don’t still have feelings for him? I am not stupid." he muttered the latter part to himself, but Mallory caught it.

"I am sorry if this will rub you the wrong way, but who I talk with us none of your concern, you said so before, this is just a marriage of convenience." she reminded him, placing her blow drier down.

His countenance changed, "Of course I know that, but I can still give you advise. He’s a married man, and he has his heart set on his wife alone, nothing good will come out of it." he said, then turned his back to her.

A small smile played on Mallory’s lips, "Don’t worry, I have already sorted out my feelings for Thane, anything left is just..." she intentionally left her sentence hanging.

Matthew’s ears stood, "Just what?" he sprang up, he marched to her dresser, an expectant look on his face.

’So predictable.’ she couldn’t help but chuckle in her head.

She spun her chair, directly facing him, "You mean you don’t know why I’m doing this? Why I’m contacting your brother for help in the business?" she teased.

Without thinking, he replied, "You said you’d help make me the heir to the business."

"Well yes, but you still haven’t figured out why I’m going to such lengths?"

He frowned, "Why? Isn’t this supposed to benefit the both of us? That’s what you said, isn’t it? I get the business, while you won’t get married off by your family."

She pinched his chin, "You really are slow." she said, then returned her focus to drying her hair.

Mathew scratched the back of his head, half pissed, half confused, "You’re always like this, never finishing what you start." he grumbled, then returned to the bed, his hands crossed behind his head.

"But I know Thane well, he wouldn’t help if there wasn’t something he gained from this." he let her know.

Mallory nodded, "You are right about that. He did mention something he wanted me to do, but I get the feeling he has something more planned."

"What did he ask?"

She sighed, "Don’t be angry at me," she started.

Matthew frowned, "Why? What did he make you do?" he recalled Hannah, and his blood began to boil. He,n just like his entire family knew just how similar Thane was to their grandfather.

"He asked me to get close to your grandfather." she confessed.

"What?!" Matthew sprang up.

"How dare he? He knows just how terrifying he is, how could he ask that of you?" Matthew fumed with anger.

"See, I knew you’d be upset, that’s why I didn’t bring it up.-"

"So he gets kicked out and thinks he can boss you around? Just because you have feelings for him?!" he cursed.

Mallory shot him a glare, "I already told you, I don’t like him, I just feel obligated because he helped me with my aunt. Not to mention he didn’t give me any strange requests, he just wanted me to get close to the old man." she defended.

Matthew hissed, "We all know where he’s headed to with this. He left home on his own, so now he wants eyes and ears in the family. And you’re busy defending him!"

"Matthew, I can make my own decisions, and no, I would never place myself in danger for anyone, not even for Thane." she clearly stated, "I’m not foolish, I know he’s just using me, but at the same time we can stand to benefit from this. Becoming your grandfather’s favorite will work in our favor. And the closer I get to him, the more he’s likely to let his guard down around me." she tried to make him understand.

"Do as you please!" he marched to his closet and pulled out his boxing gear. "I must bore you with how unintelligent I am, forgive me for worrying about you."

Mallory dropped her shoulders, "What are you mad about now? I apologize for not telling you about this earlier, I’ll keep you in the loop next time." she went over to him, and reached for his wrist.

Her tone softened, "Come on, don’t be mad at me anymore, I wasn’t going to make a move until I told you about this, we are partners, so your opinion matters the most to me." her eyes held a gentle gaze.

On hearing that, the anger on his face quelled, he retraced his hand from hers, a proud smirk on his face, "Naturally my opinion matters most, I was checking to see if you knew that."

Adjusting the bag on his shoulder, he said, "Don’t wait up for me, I’ll be at the gym all night."

She nodded, "I have some documents to gloss over anyway."

Matthew made a face, "There’s still more paperwork?"

"Naturally, there’s much research to be maid about potential investors, I’m also studying on your family’s business, if we want to leave a lasting impression, there is still so much work to cover." she informed him. 𝕗𝚛𝚎𝚎𝐰𝗲𝗯𝗻𝚘𝚟𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝕞

After listening, he slid his bag off his shoulder and dropped it on the nearest table.

"Aren’t you going to the gym anymore?" she sheepishly asked.

He walked past her towards the study area in his bedroom, "What are you standing around there for? We have a lot of work to do." he said, making a complete one eighty.

Mallory covered the grin on her face, "He really is simple minded." she muttered as she went after him, an all knowing look in her eye.
