Chapter 316: An Upcoming Business Trip

Thane stepped out of the kitchen, both hands occupied with plating. Brooke hastily dropped his phone back on the table, and helped him set the table.

For the most part their dinner was silent, with small talk inserted here and there, Brooke was tempted multiple times to ask about Mallory, and why he was still talking with her, but she ultimately decided against it.

After dinner, however, Thane made an announcement that left her stunned.

"I have a business trip coming up, I’ll be gone for a week." he informed her, whilst they cleared the table.

Brooke’s countenance fell, "Will you be okay?" she sounded worried.

He gave her a gentle smile, "I told you already, after we uncovered Gilbert’s scheme, I am more or less fully recovered. The medication is working perfectly."

She sighed, "Okay, but make sure you take your medication with you, and take doctor Anders too."

"Yes, Mrs Grayson." he bowed his head, teasing her.

She gave him a square look, "I’m serious-" her sentence got cut off by his phone ringing.

Thane at first did not pay it any mind, but when his eyes glanced at the caller ID he immediately picked it up. "I’m sorry, but I have to take this."

She nodded, "Sure, I’ll finish things up here." barely had she finished talking than Thane walked away to answer the call.

Brooke swiftly finished clearing the table and went upstairs to go through the script for the drama, before Thane returned. She read through the first couple pages, barely impressed.

"This is just like Cassie, to pick a script with such corny lines." she shook her head.

The female lead in the drama was born mute to a small fishing community, and fell in love with a rich billionaire that washed up on the shore on her Island. Granted, the plot was a bit predictable, it was still a good cliché.

However, the problem came from the execution of the scenes, they were so cringe, that just staring at the script made Brooke have a slight headache.

And what was worse, the drama was meant to extend to sixty five episodes!

She pinched her forehead, "What the hell have I gotten myself into?" she grimaced, hoping that at the very least, the cast would be far more enthusiastic about filming.

"I guess a bit of spying wouldn’t hurt." she said, then took out her phone to check the social media handles of all her co-stars.

She was in the middle of going through them, when a text from Hannah popped up on her screen. It was a link to a post that Cassie had just made, an interview between her and some gossip magazine.

Brooke could already tell her sister was up to something, and reluctantly tapped on play.

"That’s so generous of you, to invite Brooke Larson to your agency after her premiere. That must’ve taken so much out of you, considering how she acted towards you in the past." the interviewer said, reading through the per-prepared script sent by Cassie.

Cassie’s lips formed a slight curve, "It’s nothing really, it’s easy for young actresses to act out, she needs someone more experienced looking out for her. You see, after I saw at her at the premiere, it was clear as day that she had some talent, and with a nudge in the right direction, her talent wouldn’t go to waste."

"And by nudge in the right direction, do you mean granting her your role in director Lee’s new drama?" the interviewer asked.

Cassie gasped, "How did you know about that? Our company hasn’t made a public announcement yet."

"A reporter never shares her sources," she grinned, then adjusted her posture, allowing her to read the script better from her tablet. In her head, she cursed, ’This brat! Does she think it’s easy to set all this up at just the wave of her hand?’

The head of the gossip magazine jumped at the chance to interview Cassie, as well as be the first one to release confidential information to the public. However, the staff members who had already clocked out of work were forced to stay back and work around Cassie’s demands.

Straight from the camera person, down to the lights and sound team, no one was glad about this interview.

’I’d much rather interview Brooke, at least someone the public is interested in.’ she lamented, checking the time at a five minute interval.

Cassie carried on for the rest of the interview, singing her own praises, disguised as concern for Brooke. She also said something about being open to welcoming Sadie to their company, but the interviewer did not expand on that.

After an extended thirty minutes, the interview ended and Cassie was escorted to her awaiting car, where her mother had just arrived with dinner.

"Go gather my things, the owner said she has some gifts prepared for me." Cassie instructed Hannah.

"Yes, Ma’am." she meekly replied, her hands in front of her, her head bowed.

Watching Hannah walk away, Serena finally brought up what was weighing on her mind. "Honey, don’t you think all this is suspicious? I don’t trust that assistant."

Cassie ignored her and tore into the meal her mother had brought her.

"Cassie, I am being serious! Think about it, how could those photos we had of Brooke all go missing?" she pointed out, her eyes distrusting.

Cassie rolled her eyes, "It was a virus, did you not get that?"

"How could your phone suddenly get a virus? It does not make any sense. And, not to mention, we don’t know anything about her. I think you should have her fired." she suggested, wanting to pluck out the thorn in their side.

Her daughter shook her head dismissively, "The company hired her-"

"Then that’s even more suspicious!" Serena argued.

"What? You act like this is the first time that’s happened."

Serena shook her head, "But back then, Luther was the president, so we could trust all the staff he hired. But now, with this B.G. woman, can we be so sure this isn’t some ploy?" her mother had sensed that things were ominous around them, the timing for things was just too intentional.

Cassie sensed that the conversation was not ending anytime soon, so she decided to indulge her for a bit. "Say she’s not who she says she is, it isn’t an issue. I’ll just handle her. Look, at how timid she’s become after servicing director Lee. I can make her do even worse things, if it’ll ease your bitching. And if you catch her, then you get to do whatever you please with her."

Her mother nodded, and sunk into her seat, "But Cassie, there’s still something bothering me."

Cassie hissed, "What is it now?!"

Serena cut her off with a whisper, "Are you sure, the father of your child won’t be a problem for us?"

"I already told you to forget about that. That man is as good as non-existent." she scolded.

"Our focus now, is how to deal with that bitch, Brooke." she reminded her, her fist clenched tightly.
