Chapter 200: No Different From When They Were Kids

The driver pulled over at a park situated a good mile from the center of the city, one frequented by not so many people. Thane alighted the vehicle, Brooke’s hand in his and led her for an evening stroll.

For the first half of their stroll they moved in silence, matching each other’s pace, the other people at the park stole glances at them, in awe of such a visually appealing couple.

It wasn’t until they reached a fountain that Thane halted in his steps and reached into his pocket for his wallet.

Brooke made a face when she watched Thane pull out two hundred dollar bills, "What are you doing?" she asked raising a brow.

Naturally he replied, "Making a wish, isn’t it appropriate to throw money into a fountain and make a wish?" he passed a bill to Brooke, "Let’s both make a wish."

Brooke stared incredulously at the note in her hand, then she averted her gaze to her husband who had his note clasped between his palms and his eyes closed ready to make a wish. It felt almost criminal to tell him he was giving too much, seeing how earnest he looked, a smile played on her lips.

"Thane," she tapped his shoulder gently, "You toss a coin to make a wish, not a hundred dollar bill."

Thane responded, "Won’t my wish get granted quicker if I pay more money?"

She chuckled, "It’s not a competition you know, what could you possibly want that’d make you act so rashly?" The thought of her rationalist husband depending so stubbornly on luck made her intrigued.

In a serious tone Thane replied, "I’d like to always be able to make you happy. No matter what is thrown your way, I want to stand in front, shielding you from it."

Hearing his words, Brooke immediately pressed her dollar bill in between her palms, and closed her eyes making a wish. After she finished she turned to him, his eyes expectant, he was just a word away from asking what she wished for. Unfortunately, Brooke’s phone rang, slicing into their conversation.

"Brooke-"

"I should get this." She said, reaching into the coat Thane had placed on her shoulders, she pulled out her phone and rushed out to answer the call. ƒrēenovelkiss.com

Watching her walk away, Thane’s features softened, he loved that woman so much and couldn’t bear to see the conflicted look on her face.

At the hospital, Sarah could sense that something was off, her sister’s ex-husband showing up from nowhere and demanding to see Cassie alone spelled nothing but trouble.

Dragging Serena by the elbow she pulled her away and slammed her sister hard against the nearest door. "What the hell Serena? Why is he here? And what is he doing here with Cassie?"

Serena sent her sister a scornful look, "It’s none of your business-"

"It is! And unless you tell me what is going on, you’ll regret it!" Sarah scolded.

Seeing how serious she was about the matter she retorted, her eyes fiery, "If you must know, Julian is Cassie’s father and he’s here to see his daughter." She admitted gleaming with pride.

His daughter? Sarah hissed, "That is bullshit! There is no way he is her father! Serena what the hell are you trying to do?!" she ran her fingers frustrated through her hair. "What about Luther? Did you cheat on him?!"

Serena kept her head high, "Anyone can make mistakes-"

"A mistake?! You let someone else raise Cassie all these years...wait a minute, there is no way Julian could be her father! He had already divorced you and left, if he was the father of any of your children then it’d have to be..." she left her words hanging, her thoughts calculated, she looked at her sister and let out a gasp.

"It’s Brooke, isn’t it?" Sarah pointed out, her eyes glistening with realization. "Julian’s daughter is Brooke." She muttered, instinctively reaching for her phone. She pulled out her phone and started to call Brooke.

She turned around to leave, but Serena held her by the arm, "You’re sprouting nonsense! Cassie is his daughter-"

"No! It’s Brooke! It all makes sense! You and Scott were acting so vague about the identity of Brooke’s father back then, saying he died, rubbish! You’re both nothing but liars!" she cried, placing the phone to her ear.

The person on the other side answered, Sarah sighed in relief, "Brooke! Thank goodness you answered-" she was saying until Serena smacked the phone out of her hands, cracking her screen!

"Hello?!"

"Aunt Sarah?!"

Brooke’s voice drew both sister’s gazes to the phone, in a flash they both dashed for it but Serena was swifter and picked the phone up. She disconnected the call, and held tightly onto the phone.

"That is enough!" Serena raised her voice, earning some stares from the passersby patients. Some nurses came over to check what was happening but Serena marched out first, with Sarah’s phone in her hand.

Sarah rushed after her sister, desperate to get her phone back, however getting outside the hospital, she was caught by someone from the past she didn’t think she’d meet.

Her eyes filled with anger, she glared at the man her sister had gone and hid behind, the one who caused all of the confusion, and pain.

"Scott." She gritted her teeth, looking at her older brother.

Scott looked Sarah from head to toe, his lips curved into a sadistic smirk. "The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, does it?"

Serena snorted, "She tried to snatch this phone from me. She was going to tell Julian that Brooke was his daughter." She reported.

Sarah folded her arms, "You’re no different from when we were kids, always hiding behind our dear brother." She turned to Scott, "Why the hell are you back?!"

Scott scoffed, "I could ask you the same thing, why are you back?"

Sarah frowned, "I’m different from you-"

"Are you? You left when you got a job, came back when shit’s hit the fan. Sarah, you’re no different from me, if anything you’re much worse." He stepped forward, bridging the gap between them.

Leaning in he said, "At least, I don’t mask my intentions, pretending to be some saint. So tell me sis, will you keep your mouth shut, or will you do what I tell you to."
