Chapter 135: A Forgotten Promise

Brooke stole glances at the man in his late forties, getting bandaged up by Maverick in one of the hospital rooms.

"It’s cold tonight, here." Thane’s voice echoed in her ears, followed by Thane’s scent wafting through the air, from his jacket.

"Thank you." She said, clutching onto the sides of the jacket.

Thane sat next to her, and followed her eyes to the piss drunken man, who Brooke had called father up until some minutes ago. Unfortunately, his security team pounced on him, apprehending the threat.

He looked at Brooke, and certain enough, she was shaken up by everything that had just happened.

"How’s your arm?" She asked all of a sudden, steering the conversation to the bandage wrapped around his left arm.

"It’s okay-"

"The truth, Mr Grayson." She snapped at him, her eyes narrowed into a sharp glare.

Thane swallowed, it was rare to see his wife get upset with him. "It stings, just a bit."

"I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have stormed out like that and gotten you hurt." She apologized, pulling the jacket forward.

"Actually, I should have just listened to you and never come here in the first place. I shouldn’t have said anything, and I shouldn’t have-"

"It’s not your fault. If anything, all this is my fault." Thane cut her off, he placed his fingers over Brooke’s hand and held her tightly.

Brooke’s chest tightened and her eyes widened at his sudden contact, she stared at his hand, which was so much larger and yet looked so much frailer.

"I didn’t tell you about my health, because I didn’t want you to feel guilty into loving me." He confessed.

"Loving you?" She gasped.

He retorted sharply, "I have always had people look at me with pity or contempt, all because I was born this way. But with you, I had someone treat me like an ordinary person, and it felt nice while it lasted."

Brooke swallowed, the heat from their palms spread throughout her body causing tingles and shivers.

What did he mean by loving him? Could she take it the way she thought he meant? Was all this just her overthinking things?

Thane gave her hand a tight squeeze, "It was selfish and inconsiderate of me to keep you in the dark." Just as he said that, Maverick emerged out of the hospital room, a disapproving look on his face.

"How is he?" Brooke asked, retracting her hand from his.

Maverick replied, "He’s sobered up now. And no, he doesn’t have any internal bleeding. Just a fucking bad attitude."

Thane and Brooke exchanged quick glances with each other.

"Can I go see him?" Brooke asked, peeking behind Maverick at her father.

Maverick nodded, "You can, but I don’t recommend you seeing him." He said, his gaze pointed at Thane while he spoke.

Thane rolled his eyes and got up, "If Brooke is seeing him, so will I." He extended his hand out to her, but she didn’t take it.

Her eyes apologetic she said in a loud whisper, "I think that I should see him alone."

Maverick raised a brow, he hadn’t thought that Brooke had it in her to disagree with his cousin.

But what surprised him even more was Thane nodding, "Alright, but I want you to call me the moment anything happens."

"Thank you." Brooke whispered, then wheeled herself forward, her heart heavy with feelings she could not interpret and her thoughts plagued with Thane’s confession.

However, as soon as she wheeled into the room, and cast her gaze on her father, everything else was pushed back.

"Oh fuck! Just my luck. What the hell are you doing here?" He snapped at her.

Brooke blinked twice, fighting back the tears in her eyes. "I thought you were dead. Mother said you were hit by a car-"

He hissed, "What the hell are you on about? You said the same bullshit earlier. Do I owe you money or something?" He asked, searching his pockets for something.

Brooke wheeled over to him and took another look at him, her gaze pointed at the side of his neck, which still had the stitch from when he got into a bar fight.

"Hey! What are you looking at?!" He snapped at her, taking out a pack of cigarettes, "I don’t have any money, I’m all out-"

"You’re Scott Larson, and I’m your daughter with Serena, Brooke. Dad, do you remember me?" She asked, her tone desperate.

"Like I said kid, I don’t have any money-" He took a pause, stun drawn across his face.

"You’re Serena’s daughter?" He asked, taking a critical look at Brooke.

She nodded, "Yes, do you remember me?"

"What the hell happened to you? The last time I saw you, you still used your legs, you look like you were the one in an accident." He remarked, wiping the spec from his eyes.

Brooke inhaled sharply, "That’s not important. What happened to you? Mother said that you died, I don’t understand, how come you’re all the way here? What’s going on?"

Scott scratched the back of his neck. "Where is she? Is Serena here with you?"

Brooke frowned. She figured that since he was alive and clearly not missing his memories, she wondered how he didn’t know a thing about them.

"She got married again."

"That lying bitch." He hissed.

"Dad?" She called out to him, "Can you slow down and explain everything to me? Why are you here? Where have you been all these years?"

Scott clicked his tongue, "Back away and give me some space to breathe, you’re smothering me."

Brooke nodded and wheeled away, "I’m sorry, I’m just so shocked to see you."

He balanced his cigarettes in-between his lips, and reached in his front pocket for his lighter. While he searched for it, his eyes fell to her fingers and couldn’t help but gawk at the ring sitting on it.

’The fuck? Is that diamond real?’ he took another look at the expensive wheelchair she sat on.

’Now that I think of it, this district, isn’t it that exclusive area? How could someone like this girl be here. Unless...’ he shook his head, then looked at Brooke carefully.

"What did you call me girlie? Dad?" He asked.

Brooke knitted her brows, "Can I not call you that?" She asked.

Scott forced a laugh, "Of course you can. I just didn’t think you’d still think of me as your father after all these years."

Brooke let out a deep sigh. "I know that, but you’re the only family I have left."

Scott smiled, "Is Serena dead or something?"

Brooke stroked her ring, "No, we just aren’t on speaking terms with each other."

The grin on Scott’s face grew broader, "You mean, she won’t know anything about us meeting like this?"

"I won’t tell her. I don’t know why she would lie about you dying, but I don’t have any plans of letting her know I’ve met you." she revealed.

Scott lit the butt of his cigarette, "Come closer child, and I’ll tell you everything that happened and how your mother took you away from me." He said, gesturing Brooke over.

Outside, Thane had just sent the last text to all of his information networks, which was a picture he got from the hospital’s security footage of Scott. He gave clear instructions to have everything about him submitted in less than twenty four hours.

"Someone looks paranoid, do you not trust your wife?" Maverick taunted, taking a seat next to his cousin.

Thane frowned at the door, "I don’t trust that man as far as I can throw him."

Maverick sighed, "I’m with you on this on, there’s just something shady about that man. And knowing your wife, I don’t think she’ll be able to see through it."

Thane didn’t say a word and just kept his gaze on the door, his worry spilling.

Maverick went on, "But still, why was he driving on a private road? He shouldn’t even have had access to this area." He pointed out, rousing Thane’s suspicion.

Seeing as his cousin wouldn’t say a word, Maverick asked, "And Zelda?"

Thane’s shoulders tensed up. He looked over his shoulder at Maverick, who had a sadistic grin on his face.

"How do you do it? Stare at aunt Cressida and not feel any guilt? Or was being grandfather’s favorite much more important than your promise to her?" Maverick asked.

Thane clenched his fist, "We agreed to keep that to ourselves-" he was saying only to get cut off by Brooke wheeling herself out of his room.

Thane quickly got up and walked over to her. He got on one knee and reached for her hand, only to notice the scent of smoke on her. He looked behind her at Scott, who had fallen asleep and his gaze darkened.

"Brooke..."

Brooke cut him off, tugging on his shirt, pulling him down to her level. In a low tone she said to his hearing only.

"I don’t trust that man." Brooke announced, her overly polite smile contorted into a harsh frown.
