Chapter 74: Chapter 74: You’re good at pole dancing?

"Doctor Chen, sorry to disturb you so late, but are you available?" He Lisan asked weakly. "My sister fainted suddenly today, and no matter how the doctors try, they can’t wake her up! She’s especially important to the He family; my dad is already going crazy. Your medical skills are so incredible, can you please save her?"

Chen Xiaobei asked, "Where is she?"

"At Songshan First Hospital. Should I send a car to pick you up now?"

"In Songshan?" Chen Xiaobei frowned. "A round trip would take too long. Tell you what, I have some things to take care of in Mangniu Town that I can’t get away from. You bring your sister here right now. As long as she’s still breathing, I have a way to save her! When you get to Mangniu Town, find me at the Longhua Hotel!"

After all, the man had even let his wife sleep with him, so Chen Xiaobei felt obligated to help He Lisan. Besides, his father was He Yongkun, the Magistrate of Songshan County, a connection Chen Xiaobei needed.

Upon hearing this, He Lisan couldn’t contain his excitement. "Thank you, Doctor Chen! I’ll tell my father right away. We’ll both head over!"

After hanging up, Chen Xiaobei walked into Qiu Xingcai’s private room.

Nine people were sitting inside, all of them Chen Xiaobei’s junior high classmates, but they hadn’t really kept in touch after graduation. Still, Chen Xiaobei had to say the polite thing. He cupped his hands in a traditional greeting. "Sorry, everyone, I’m late!"

He glanced around and saw empty seats next to both Qiu Xingcai and Zhang Xiangdong. Without a second thought, he plopped down right beside Qiu Xingcai.

"Xiaobei, you—" Qiu Xingcai’s pretty face turned pale. But she couldn’t deny that, deep down, she was also very happy and touched.

People these days are just so pragmatic. Even though I arranged this dinner to entertain Zhang Xiangdong, I still wanted to catch up with my old classmates. But what did they do? They deliberately kept their distance from me and Zhang Xiangdong, obviously to suck up to him! To be honest, I really hate Zhang Xiangdong! It’s bad enough that he’s ugly, but he’s also incredibly bossy and lecherous. Still, for the sake of my company, I have to submit to him.

The thought of having to sleep with Zhang Xiangdong after dinner made her feel incredibly sad and hopeless. Yet, she never expected Chen Xiaobei to come along. That feeling of being protected moved Qiu Xingcai so much she wanted to cry.

But what good would crying do? Xiaobei can’t help me, can he?

Qiu Xingcai was terribly conflicted, feeling as if she were on pins and needles, yet she couldn’t bring herself to send Chen Xiaobei away.

Just then, she felt a pat on her thigh.

She saw Chen Xiaobei give her a reassuring look before he proactively raised his glass. "Uh, everyone, I’m really sorry. I got held up by business and was late. I’ll punish myself with a drink. Please, you all carry on!"

With that, Chen Xiaobei drained his glass.

Instantly, the atmosphere in the room eased considerably. As a model student in their class, and a particularly handsome one at that, Chen Xiaobei had been very popular with the girls back in the day.

Sure enough, just as he finished his drink, a female classmate looked at him and smiled. "Wow! If it isn’t our class heartthrob. Chen Xiaobei, I heard you got into Songshan University. You must have found a pretty good job by now, right? If you make it big, don’t forget about us old classmates!"

Her words made all the other classmates look at Chen Xiaobei curiously. Back then, everyone was poor, and it was rare for a family to produce a university student, so Chen Xiaobei had been quite a figure among his peers.

Chen Xiaobei remembered the girl. Her name was Liang Xiaoxiao, and she’d been one of the girls who had a crush on him. It seemed she and her husband were now in Mangniu Town, running a business selling production materials. They were making a decent, if unremarkable, living.

"Sigh, it’s a long story," Chen Xiaobei sighed, telling the truth. "I did get into university, but I had to drop out because of some family issues. I’m not doing much at the moment. I just planted some watermelons in Shanhe Village, and they’re selling pretty well."

"Huh? Selling watermelons?!" Liang Xiaoxiao’s eyes widened, her interest in Chen Xiaobei vanishing instantly. Then, she sighed, "I guess life really is unpredictable. You were such a good student back then. I never thought you’d end up like this! It seems Classmate Zhang is the truly impressive one! After all these years, he’s become the president of the Songshan Rural Credit Cooperative. Classmate Zhang, you mustn’t forget about us old classmates! I’ll drink to you!"

With that, Liang Xiaoxiao raised her glass.

"That’s right, Classmate Zhang! Don’t you forget about us!" the other classmates chimed in, raising their glasses as well.

"Hey! We’re all classmates, no need to be so formal. In fact, it’s I who should be apologizing to everyone," Zhang Xiangdong said smugly. "I used to have a bad temper and always bullied you all in class. I hope you don’t hold it against me. I’ll make a promise right here, right now: if any of you ever need my help with anything, just say the word, and I’ll definitely help out!"

"Come, come." Zhang Xiangdong aimed his glass at Qiu Xingcai, completely disregarding Chen Xiaobei as if he were nothing. "But if we’re talking about our classmates, Xingcai is the most outstanding one here! She’s so young and already the general manager of a construction company. Although her company isn’t doing too well at the moment, she’s still leagues above the rest of us. Plus, Xingcai is treating us to this meal today. I think we should all give her a toast!"

"President Zhang, I think Xingcai was really just inviting you. The rest of us are just here basking in your reflected glory," Liang Xiaoxiao, ever the social butterfly, said, flattering him shamelessly.

"Ahem! Xiaoxiao, that’s going too far. We’re all classmates, don’t talk nonsense!" Qiu Xingcai said, a little embarrassed. She raised her glass. "Come, to our youth, now gone! Cheers!"

"Cheers!"

In an instant, the classmates all downed their drinks.

Only Chen Xiaobei didn’t drink. After all, he was only here to protect Qiu Xingcai and had no interest in these snobbish classmates. Besides, he was absolutely famished after spending the entire afternoon screwing Zhao Caixia and Yang Yun. The food at the Longhua Hotel was truly delicious. While everyone else was drinking, Chen Xiaobei swept through the dishes like a whirlwind, managing to devour half the food on the table by himself.

This scene left his classmates dumbfounded.

Liang Xiaoxiao, in particular, frowned, her eyes filled with disdain and contempt.

I used to have such a crush on him, but because my grades were bad, I never had the courage to confess. Looking at him now, how naive I was back then! What’s the point of good grades? In the end, didn’t he just end up as a farmer? On the other hand, look at Zhang Xiangdong. He used to be the one dragging the whole class down, and now he’s a bank president! It just goes to show that what matters is money and power. Just being good at studying is useless.

As she thought this, she found Zhang Xiangdong incredibly handsome and felt herself growing moist down below.

But I know he wouldn’t give me a second glance. His eyes are completely filled with Qiu Xingcai.

Sure enough, Zhang Xiangdong let out a burp, looked at Qiu Xingcai, and said, "Xingcai, I hear you’re pretty good at pole dancing. How about you give us a little show?"

As soon as he said this, Qiu Xingcai’s brow immediately furrowed.
