Chapter 144: Chapter 144: Eager

Because they were still in the provincial capital, it would take more than three hours to drive through the city to the military region.

Xiao Xu was driving, while Yang PeiMin and Shen Yiguang sat in the backseat.

By now, the sky had darkened as well.

"Still a long way to go," Shen Yiguang said to her, "you should get some sleep."

Yang PeiMin nodded in agreement.

She had hardly slept on the train, due to either noise or smell, feeling as if she had been in that space for two days and had even picked up its sour, refreshing scent.

Thinking about it made her feel uncomfortable all over.

Originally sitting very close to Shen Yiguang, hardly a fist’s width apart, she now shifted a little away, feeling somewhat ashamed.

"What’s wrong? Is the seat uncomfortable?" Shen Yiguang checked the seat conditions for her.

Yang PeiMin raised her hand to touch the small flowers by her ear and smiled sheepishly, "Nothing, just looking for a comfortable position to sleep."

Shen Yiguang reached over, gently patted her head, and softly yet firmly pushed her closer, motioning her to lean on his shoulder to sleep.

"This should be better."

Yang PeiMin looked up at him, his modesty replaced by directness now?

Xiao Xu was still driving upfront, and he had a habit of glancing back when talking to them, allowing him to see what they were doing.

Shen Yiguang peered down at her with intense eyes, stroked her hair twice, and eventually said, "Sleep for a while."

Yang PeiMin cast her wandering thoughts aside, closed her eyes, and leaned on his shoulder.

The road was rough as it had been on their arrival, marked by potholes and lacking streetlights, the night sounds of insects, and passing villages that provoked dog barks; yet, Yang PeiMin strangely felt a profound tranquility, managing to fall asleep amidst the jolts and shakes.

Shen Yiguang opened her bag, pulled out a jacket and draped it over her, and under the sparse moonlight, gazing at her peaceful sleeping face, he felt a deep sense of serenity.

He had finally seen her again.

Carefully, he wrapped his arm around her shoulder, as she nestled into his chest. Yang PeiMin slightly shifted as if to find a more comfortable spot, and Shen Yiguang gently pressed her against his chest, then watched as she smacked her lips in her sleep, sweetly unaware, and he couldn’t help but silently laugh.

Xiao Xu, driving alone in the front seat, felt the pang of loneliness, tilted his head and said, "Boss, the sister-in-law has fallen asleep." Despite the darkness, he really hadn’t seen anything clearly.

Shen Yiguang hummed a response through his nose.

Seeing him respond, Xiao Xu quickly added, "Boss, you and sister-in-law have such a good relationship, not like those arranged marriages... How do I put it? It’s like they still haven’t figured out each other’s personalities and are still holding grudges..."

"Shut up, you speak as if you’ve been married," Shen Yiguang said disdainfully.

Xiao Xu chuckled twice, "It’s just what those youngsters talk about. Hey, honestly, boss, does sister-in-law have single friends, cousins or sisters or something?"

"To have even one-tenth of sister-in-law’s qualities would be enough,"

Shen Yiguang frowned, "No!"

Xiao Xu sighed with some disappointment.

However, as his eyes turned twice more, intending to procrastinate, Shen Yiguang ignored him, so he could only drive on with a feeling of melancholy.

It was hard to say how long had passed, but Yang PeiMin seemed to be in a cycle of sleeping and waking. The road was extremely bumpy with several big potholes that nearly threw her out of her seat. Although Shen Yiguang was holding her, she still woke up startled a few times and then asked Shen Yiguang if they had arrived and how much longer it would take. After asking, she continued to sleep.

By the time they actually arrived, she was deeply asleep.

Shen Yiguang helped her out of the car, and the gate guard, seeing their condition, kindly asked if they needed any help.

Shen Yiguang simply said it was due to some dizziness from the car ride, nothing serious.

Yang PeiMin, who heard this, instantly woke up fully.

After saying goodbye to Xiao Xu, Shen Yiguang took her back to the dormitory.

"The Political Commissar arranged a single room for me knowing my family was coming for a visit. It’s all set up. Go wash up and sleep," he said as they reached a dormitory building, went up to the second floor, and entered a room in the middle on the right-hand side.

Previously, Yang PeiMin had heard from him that he also used to live in a large dormitory with his subordinates. They had simply divided it into two small rooms for him and the Political Commissar with plywood, just big enough to fit a bed and a desk. Once, the family of three comrades from his camp, who lived far from the county and needed introduction letters, came visiting. It was inconvenient, but their families too wanted to stay for a few more days.

However, the other singles dormitories were occupied by couples from two other teams in the camp. The space used was also already given up by Shen Yiguang and the Political Commissar. With no other option, the Political Commissar had their parents stay in a guesthouse in the county, and the three couples shared the two small rooms previously used by Shen Yiguang and the Political Commissar. They separated the spaces with curtains, creating three small areas.

Listening to this, Yang PeiMin also felt embarrassed, as ideally a couple would want to be intimate, especially a couple meeting after a long separation.

Thus, the acts of the three couples were nearly heard through the corners of the walls.

She had once told Shen Yiguang that if she were in that situation, she would absolutely refuse.

Shen Yiguang pinched her face and whispered, "I wouldn’t want you to face such a situation either."

Fortunately, there was electric light. Shen Yi touched the switch cord and pulled it; the light came on.

Someone next door, hearing them return, opened their door and greeted them. It was a Military Wife around thirty years old, who immediately fixed her eyes on Yang PeiMin, appraising her. "So this is the sister-in-law, oh, quite a handsome one! Why did you come so late?"

It was indeed very late, nearly 11 p.m.

Yang PeiMin nodded at her politely.

But Shen Yiguang pulled her away and said to the woman, "It’s very late, Military Wife. I’ll introduce her to everyone tomorrow."

The woman’s gaze lingered on Yang PeiMin before reluctantly looking away, nodding repeatedly, "Yes, you must have a lot to talk about, I won’t disturb you then."

Shen Yiguang closed the door and shook his head, "Don’t mind her, just curious to take a look, it’s tough for her staying up this late."

Did he mean that the Military Wife specifically waited until 11 p.m. to see her arrival?

Yang PeiMin couldn’t help but admire the woman’s strong curiosity, thinking she wouldn’t have a quiet moment in the coming days.

But soon, she didn’t have the leisure to think about anyone else. Shen Yiguang turned around, pressed her against the door, his breath growing heavier, eyes blazing, voice hoarse, "Wife, I’ve missed you to death!"

Yang PeiMin’s heart also skipped, despite her weariness. "You first let go, I, I need to take a shower..."
