Daily Intelligence System: Don't Kill Me, Honey!-Chapter 48: The Imaginary Treasure Hunter
In the morning, breakfast was simple, porridge made from sorghum rice and pickled wild vegetables.
Ruirui held the rice bowl, stirring the porridge while sneaking glances at the two adults across from each other, exchanging affectionate looks.
*Something was off, these two were acting very suspiciously!*
"Sister."
"Sister."
"Huh?"
Su Yunjin turned her head to look at Ruirui.
"Where did you go last night? I got up to pee in the middle of the night and didn't see you."
Upon hearing this, Su Yunjin's face immediately turned red. She glanced at Chen Jie, picking up her rice bowl to hide her embarrassment.
"Why are you looking at brother-in-law? Brother-in-law, do you know?"
Ruirui turned to look at Chen Jie.
Chen Jie remained calm, took a sip of porridge and said, "Oh, Ruirui is quite impressive now, not wetting the bed anymore? Your sister told me that when you were four, you still wet the bed!"
"Well, brother-in-law, I haven't wet the bed in a long time. Ruirui is a big kid now!"
Ruirui became anxious immediately.
Seeing this, Chen Jie smiled, *this little kid is still just a little kid,* and then continued, "Is that so? But Ruirui still looks very small."
"Brother-in-law, let me tell you, Ruirui is five years old this year, and five-year-olds don't wet the bed."
"Is that so? Ruirui is quite impressive now."
"Mmm hmm."
"Good, very good. Since Ruirui is doing so well, brother-in-law will buy you some treats today, alright?"
"Okay!"
Ruirui shouted excitedly, having already forgotten about the incident of his sister disappearing last night.
Su Yunjin glanced at Chen Jie, her eyes showing gratitude.
Chen Jie responded with a casual "not a big deal" expression.
*It wasn't just dealing with a little kid, even in the past with business partners, he rarely left any loopholes in others' words; how could he let a child stump him?*
After finishing breakfast, Chen Jie took his leave from Su Yunjin.
He had originally wanted to give the money he earned yesterday to Su Yunjin, but upon thinking it over, giving her so much money abruptly might not be a good thing and could cause her to worry.
So, Chen Jie decided not to give her the money, thinking that he could find some time to buy some things instead.
With money to spare this time, he thought he might as well buy two new sets of clothes for the sisters.
Su Yunjin's current clothes still had patches. Although she was naturally pretty, patched clothes didn't affect her appearance; but now that life was getting better, why should Su Yunjin have to live so poorly?
As he walked out the door, he saw a few people in black clothes, resembling house servants, asking questions of some women in the village on the street.
The women gestured and spoke, leaving the house servants utterly confused.
As Chen Jie passed by, he overheard one woman say, "I'm telling you, the Golden Chicken you are looking for was definitely taken by that treasure hunter from out of town."
"A treasure hunter from out of town?"
"That's right, we saw it with our own eyes."
"You saw it with your own eyes?"
The house servants looked at the village women, and one woman said, "No doubt about it, he came down from the roof in front of us while we were doing laundry, we saw it clearly."
"What time did it happen?"
"It must have been around the Hour of the Rabbit."
"Right, when I was leaving home, it should've been a quarter past Rabbit Hour, so it hadn't reached the end of Rabbit Hour yet..."
"What did that treasure hunter look like?"
The house servants asked, and upon hearing this, one woman said, "About this tall, not slender from what I could tell, so he probably wasn't a farmer."
The woman gestured with her hands, "Wearing a conical hat, features not clear, but looked over thirty, right, second sister-in-law?"
"About right. Exposure to wind and sun ages people, maybe twenty-eight or twenty-nine."
The women described him bit by bit until they conjured up the image of a Hero of the River.
Seven feet tall, robust, dressed in black, wearing a conical hat, carrying a burlap sack...
And beside the house servants, there was an artist sketching based on the description, occasionally asking the women for more details.
The women chatted rapidly.
"Second sister-in-law, do you have anything to add?"
"This face needs to be more slender, right, there was also a scar on the left cheek."
"Uh, second sister-in-law, was there?"
"There was, you didn't pay attention."
"Hmm, was there or wasn't there?" The house servants asked.
"There was, there was!"
Finally, the artist sketched out the image of a Hero from the River, and the house servants, upon looking at it, thought, *This should be enough to report back.*
Just then, Chen Jie came walking over from his house.
"Stop, where are you going?"
Chen Jie looked at the house servants and said, "Who are you guys? Why are you stopping me?"
"No nonsense, just answer my question!"
One auntie on the side said, "Jiu Si, they're from Master Yu's house in town."
"Oh, oh, go ahead and ask."
Chen Jie nodded as if he just realized, and the house servants looked at Chen Jie and said, "Did you see anyone coming down the mountain with a burlap sack the day before yesterday?"
"Well, I don't know, do I?"
"Hmm?"
The house servants suddenly became suspicious, looking over at the women, the women urgently stared at Chen Jie, "Jiu Si, think about it carefully, wasn't there someone with a conical hat?"
Chen Jie looked innocent and said, "Aunties, I've been recently learning medicine with Doctor Bai, reciting the medicine classics every day, my head's in a fog, I really can't recall."
Upon hearing this, the women said, "Yes, Jiu Si's busy with his studies every day, where would he have time to pay attention to this?"
Chen Jie looked up at the house servants and said, "Gentlemen, I really haven't seen anything. If you want, why don't you follow me to my master's house and ask my Uncle Wu Zhong, he's always out and about!"
"How about it?"
Chen Jie looked at the house servants as he spoke, and the house servants immediately felt incredibly awkward upon hearing this.
*Who were they to go and ask Wu Zhong—did they have a death wish?*
What kind of person was Wu Zhong, the Fishery Manager for the Fishing Guild, on equal footing with their master; to question him, that was courting disaster, wasn't it?
Moreover, the young man in front of them wasn't just anybody, an apprentice of Doctor Bai, and everyone knew Doctor Bai was very protective of his disciples, while Wu Zhong was quite obedient to Doctor Bai.
Thinking of this, the house servants immediately changed their tone, smiling at Chen Jie, "Hehe, young brother, just joking, you're an advanced student of Doctor Bai, how could you have time to pay attention to this, we won't hold you up, go ahead and study."
Chen Jie smiled upon hearing this and said, "Alright, I'm leaving then. By the way, what are you asking around about?"
The house servants immediately shook their heads, "Nothing, nothing."
Chen Jie said, "So secretive."

He then headed directly to Doctor Bai's house, leaving the house servants there to continue asking others, "The day before yesterday, did you see anyone..."
After going around the entire Xiantao Village, the conclusion they reached was that there was indeed this man, wearing a conical hat and from out of town, who passed through here that day.
*How do you know?*
*As they say, a lie repeated often enough becomes the truth. When a rumor spreads throughout the entire village, it's no longer just a rumor.*
Chen Jie knew very well the danger of rumors, so Yu Biao, you better start searching for that conical hat-wearing, scarred-faced Hero of the River!
*Meanwhile, I'll keep a low profile and develop myself!*
