Chapter 53: Exiled

[You have gained 200 EXP]

That was the reward for completing his quest. It was lacklustre, but he didn’t care, he got to beat some idiots, and that was what mattered.

After getting rid of the flies that came after him, Zane left the alley. He used his connection with Lucy to find her exact location, and then finally, after a while, he spotted their carriage right in front of an inn that doubled as a bar.

He and Grey walked into the bar. The smell of booze and wine hit him hard, but he was unable to become drunk as a vampire; his body nullified the smell in an instant.

The bar was filled with noise, men cheering, drinking, some with ladies on their laps as they drank and tried to get into their sheets for the night.

Zane walked through, not paying attention to whatever was happening around him. Then he spotted Lucy and Ava seated at a table.

Their eyes locked, and Ava waved immediately, signalling that they should come her way. Zane headed there; they sat at a round table with extra seats.

There were some drinks on the table, but it didn’t seem they had been consumed at all.

"Master, welcome back. You spent a lot of time outside," Lucy said.

"Sorry, we were grinding in the dungeon. Maybe sometime later I’ll take you," he said, then his gaze shifted to Ava. He didn’t hide his sour expression.

She looked at him and knew that something was wrong, so she leaned in. "Tell me, what has you all twisted?" she said.

"Gluttony," Zane stated. She raised a brow, confused. "He is one of the seven deadly, and it’s also the power that inhabits my body," she replied.

"I know. You see, I didn’t understand why someone of your strength and your ability would leave the demons and decide to roam all around this realm.

I didn’t want to question it at first, but then something happened in the dungeon that made it all make sense. So tell me the truth, and let’s not start digging unnecessarily," Zane said, placing both hands on the table and leaning in.

Their eyes locked. She leaned back slowly. "If you think that was somehow supposed to make me understand what you are talking about, then you are sorely mistaken," Ava said, folding her arms.

"Fine, then tell me about Gluttony’s plan to awaken a chaos demon beast by using the life force of humans," Zane said.

Her eyes widened when she heard that. She dropped her hands and looked at Zane. "How do you know about that?" she asked in a serious tone.

"Seems I touched something sensitive. Well, I don’t care, tell me what you know about it and how you are a part of it," he barked at her.

She stared at him even more, and then broke into a smile. "A demon like me has no need to follow the instruction of any demon.

I am a rogue, cut off from my clan and everything. I live as I want and will die an exile, and as for the reason, it has something to do with this exact issue that you have spoken about.

I saved a human child that was captured along with many adults to have their life force removed. She was little and very innocent; something in me couldn’t allow me to watch her die.

So I snuck her out, but was caught, and she was killed right in front of me. As punishment, I was exiled, removed from my clan.

The only reason that I’m still alive is the fact I had gained so many merits, and my father is a general in the demon army, and so was my mother.

Their stance and reputation saved my life, but couldn’t allow me to stay. I had put a human ahead of the needs of one of the seven; there was no mercy for that. I failed," Ava explained.

Zane watched and listened to her. He could tell without doubt that she was telling the truth.

"So you aren’t part of whatever plan Gluttony is initiating," Zane said.

"As of now, no. But I was before, and I was one of the very few that knew a little bit more detail about it.

Gluttony is the most erratic and crazy of all the seven; he is conniving and very manipulative — all for the sake of feeding his hunger. He doesn’t care about the damage caused; all he cares about is consuming.

I have that part of him in me, one that makes me eternally hungry and eager to consume. But my measly hunger cannot be compared to his.

So what he wants to do with the beast is not just consume a few thousand or hundreds, he is targeting millions, within the known parts of the realm and the unknown.

He is ready to go on a feeding spree, one that will make him the strongest," she said.

"And why now? Why would he want to do something now?" Zane asked.

"I believe he came to learn about the chosen long before others did, beings with the power to grow infinitely and rise to become gods.

He doesn’t want to be left behind, and neither does any of the seven. They want to ensure that their relevance and power remain through all the ages," Ava explained.

"So for that, he would commit mass genocide," Zane stated.

"In his book, it’s nothing but a small price to pay for his own growth," she replied. Then she looked at him.

"If the seven were also to find out that a vampire was now alive, it would cause another set of worry and panic different from what even the chosen have caused.

A vampire, the top race of the past, the ones that even the true gods despised — your race will cause a very unwanted shift in the flow of things," she said.

"I know. It’s only a matter of time before enemies begin coming for me. I have to get stronger before then and build my own army and force that can repel them.

It’s a race against time right now, before Gluttony releases a monstrosity and before all the world powers also come for me," Zane said.

He glanced at the booze on the table, grabbed it, and drank it in one go. The alcohol rushed down his throat, burning as it went down.

He dropped the cup on the table as he felt the slight intoxication wash away in only a few seconds. He looked at Ava.

"I’m sorry I didn’t trust you," he said.

"No, it’s fine. I understand your concern; I would have acted the same. The issue here lies in the fact that they are getting more bold.

It should take at least a year of steady gathering for the beast to be awakened, but if they are now attacking more populated places and taking more humans, that time could be cut by half," Ava said. 𝒇𝓻𝓮𝓮𝙬𝙚𝒃𝒏𝓸𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝓬𝓸𝒎

"That’s definitely not good, but since we know about it now, we can start getting ready ahead," Zane said. He leaned back into his chair and looked at Lucy, then Grey.

"If we are going to be able to get ready in time for it, we have to do a few things, one, get stronger faster, create our own force somehow, and also gather as much information as possible about vampires.

There might be something that can help us, so we need to start looking. We also need wealth. The realm works on money, I’m sure Ava can agree," Zane said, and she nodded in return.

"So dungeon diving will become normal. We will use that to grow our resources further from there, and also build some reasonable connections as we go along.

The realm is filled with billions of resources, and if we know the right person or people, that will help as well," Zane said.

He got up from his chair. "As for now, I’m heading to rest, so show me the room."

"Can you even sleep at night?" Ava asked.

"Urhhhh, I forgot I can’t. I’m most active at night; I’m going out to see the city," Zane said, waving his hands and leaving.

He walked out the door and left the three there.

"Should we follow him?" Ava asked.

"Definitely," Lucy replied, getting up and immediately heading for the door as well. Ava and Grey followed after her.
