Chapter 142: A new lead

Braelyn’s POV

Things were just as Juliet said. Rumours have spread across the staff that I was the one who sabotaged Amelia and cost the company millions. Honestly, I found it pathetic that even when I didn’t do a thing I was given credit for their stupidity but what I didn’t expect was for New Horizon to get entangled in this mess one way or the other

That was truly unexpected, and from my observation, Raphael was already suspicious. The question he asked made my stomach churn. I almost slipped off, this was meant to be my first time hearing about New Horizon.

" I hope you aren’t up to any games " he replied and I almost laughed

"We both know I can’t afford to do that, not when I have been made the villain of my story ", I could not help but say. His expression remained unreadable like ice I could not chip off

"You have a weird sense of humour, but that doesn’t change the fact that you are still under suspicion. Amelia was sabotaged and you seem to top the list." Raphael went straight to the point and I wondered if he thought I was truly behind it.

"I didn’t do anything, unfortunately, although I would have loved to be the one, but I wasn’t. There is a reason I didn’t get involved with her " her expression cracked for a moment at my bluntness.

"Which is?" He asked.

I pursed my lips.."I didn’t want to be involved with your affairs honestly. I really don’t care at this point, but even when I avoid trouble, it comes knocking." I explained then gracefully stood up finding this meeting pointless

I was expecting a fight, but Amelia was too shaken by everything, and I could not help but be secretly thrilled by how his things played off. "I know you are smart, at least when it comes to business, and will appreciate it if you handle the situation and find the culprit." I drawled.

"I am sure you would not want a scandal escalating about your wife and mistress."

He sighed. "I understand." Raphael simply said. My eyes narrowed at him, trying to read more into the situation, but there wasn’t anything.

"In that case, I will take my leave," I announced, then left the office, closing the door behind me.

I walked out of the lift, striding down the hallway, heading to my office. I noticed a small group huddled together, whispering. My footsteps stalled but they soon noticed me.

Joan the lady from my department I had given Amelia’s project to was the first to notice me, something flickered across her gaze and she immediately alerted the others

They dispersed like ants in the blink of an eye. My lips pursed, I didn’t have to hear what they were saying. I was certain I was the primary topic of that discussion.

I scoffed and then made my way to my office down the hallway. "Welcome back Mrs Volkov." Juliet chimed as I walked past her desk.

Raphael tried to control the rumours because of his image but it was a very catchy story that blew up. Whispers were going around the company that I had really caused a major loss.

It was ridiculous how none of them considered the possibility that this could also be Amelia’s negligence.

I tried to get my mind off things and bury myself in work, but another part of me was curious, waiting for a call from Genny after last night’s incident. She went radio silent I didn’t want to call first

I was contemplating whether to call her or not when a soft knock. Before I could reply the door was pushed open. "Did you ask for a doughnut delivery?" A playful voice chimed..

A box of donuts peaked out of the door. I laughed and pushed back my seat. "I don’t remember asking for a doughnut, but it doesn’t sound bad." I chimed and the door was pushed completely open. Lucien walked in holding a box of doughnuts and two lattes.

"Great, I thought you were going to make me dispose of them." He grinned and walked towards my table, where he placed the box.

"What brought you here Mr Volkov? You seem to be in a good mood." I chirped. He smiled, flashing those dimples, he looked pretty carefree, a stark difference from the masked man last night.

"I have good news, and besides, a little bird told me you skipped lunch and were holed up in your office." He explained which sounded pretty sweet. I was so swamped with work that I didn’t realise it was past launch time.

"That’s really sweet of you ." Lucien opened the box of fresh doughnuts, which made my mouth water. My stomach grumbled in protest, and I couldn’t wait to get my hands on your doughnuts.

"It’s the least I can do, someone has to look after you, especially with those ridiculous rumours going around." Something softened in my heart knowing he didn’t think I was guilty. That made the doughnuts sweeter.

"You are really certain I wasn’t the one involved," I said taking a bite of the donuts he rolled his eyes at me

"If you could sabotage such a big corporation, you would not need help finding Killian." He justified it, my lips twitched because he was underestimating me but he wasn’t lying either.

"That’s not a fun way to put it." I sneered

Lucien smiled. "It is the truth, and besides, aren’t you curious about the goodnews I mentioned?"

He immediately got me on a hook. "What could that possibly be?"

A boyish grin immediately spread across Lucien’s lips. "I finally found a lead on Killian Orlov." He explained and my eyes went wide.

"It has barely been a day." I gasped finding it a bit unbelievable

A smug smile crossed his lips. "I don’t want to sound proud, but I have enough connections, Braelyn." Lucien wasn’t going to expose his sources and honestly, I didn’t care as long as he got the work done one way or the other

I immediately adjusted my seat, I was thrilled to finally get somewhere. "What did you find?" I excitedly inquired

Lucien leaned back across his seat. "The only chance to contact him is to run into him, and Killian isn’t based in this country despite how much he has been getting on Raphael’s nerves..." Lucien paused before adding.

"The business trip is coming soon, and I think I can arrange a chance encounter with Killian during the trip. " He made it seem so simple but

it wasn’t.

Lucien has terrifying connections.
