Contract Marriage: Let's Make It Real, Mrs. Sterling!-Chapter 238: This Is the Mess I Made
Though Chloe Young’s plan was to connect with Jensen Sterling through Martin Wright, she knew that things had to be taken one step at a time; no one can become a success overnight.
So, the most crucial thing right now was to stabilize her relationship with Martin Wright. Even if the line to Jensen Sterling didn’t pan out, she wouldn’t be left too passive and would still have a backup plan.
Chloe Young glanced at Martin Wright, then casually flicked her hair and said, "Have a seat."
Her demeanor was neither cold nor enthusiastic, as if she were catching up with an old friend she hadn’t seen in years. She knew how to capture a man’s heart.
You can’t appear too enthusiastic. Once you seem too eager, your value drops and you hand over control to someone else.
But you also can’t be too aloof. If you’re too indifferent, it will give off a sense of defeat, as if there’s no hope left.
The best approach is to keep a carefully calculated distance.
Furthermore, she believed that someone who had liked her for so long, who even found a girlfriend similar in appearance to her, wouldn’t remain indifferent when there seemed to be hope of rekindling his feelings for the person he once adored.
Sometimes, certain tactics are absolutely necessary.
Upon hearing her words, Martin Wright sat down, yet he remained somewhat dazed. Sitting next to him was someone he had liked for such a long time. The feelings inside him... they were complicated and mixed.
The two exchanged a few casual words, mostly about how life was after going abroad, whether work was going well, and future career plans. It was all very ordinary and polite.
But this wasn’t the effect Chloe Young wanted.
After a while, Chloe Young seemed to inadvertently say, "I still remember how well we got along before I went abroad. How come we seem so distant now? Did I make you feel uncomfortable?"
She purposely brought up the past before she went abroad. As expected, once these words were uttered, Martin Wright’s expression subtly changed. His gaze now held a trace of reminiscence, and there was a hint of guilt in the way he looked at Chloe Young.
They were indeed close before, and he liked her for such a long time. Even if she wasn’t the person he liked back then, he shouldn’t treat an old friend so coldly either.
Somewhat anxiously, he explained, "No, Chloe, it’s not about you. It’s just that I’ve been too exhausted from work lately, so I’m not in great spirits. I’m really sorry."
Chloe Young looked at him and smiled gently, "It’s fine."
After saying that, she stood up from the couch, gathered her belongings, and said, "I didn’t know you’ve been busy lately. I just happened to run into your aunt today. Since you’re tired, have a good rest. I won’t disturb you further. Goodbye."
With that, she turned to head towards the entrance. Seeing this, Martin Wright hurriedly got up, as this wasn’t what he intended.
Watching him, Chloe Young, who had already changed into her shoes, turned and said, "By the way, tell your aunt I said goodbye."
She then walked out.
Martin Wright’s mother emerged from the kitchen and saw what had transpired in the living room; her voice was filled with surprise. "Where’s Rose?"
Martin Wright replied, "She left."
Seeing his demeanor, Martin Wright’s mother was instantly infuriated.
"Do you understand what kind of status the Young Family holds? Rose is their only daughter. If you were with her, you’d be the Young Family’s son-in-law, which means you’re halfway to success already. You wouldn’t have to bow and scrape to the Sterling Family anymore, you understand?"
"And didn’t you really like Rose? You have to seize this golden opportunity."
Upon hearing his mother’s words, Martin Wright’s face turned cold instantly. He said, "Mom, I like Chloe just because I like her. It has nothing to do with the Young Family. I don’t want to hear such words from you again. As for the rest, I’ll figure it out myself."
He spoke so rapidly that after he finished, he realized his tone wasn’t very good. He sighed and added, "Mom, there’s no need for you to worry so much. I know what I’m doing. I’m tired today, so you should head back."
The woman looked at her son, unsure of what to say. In the end, she just sighed, said "alright," and left.
...
As Chloe Young left, she thought about Martin Wright’s appearance just now and smiled. Even if his feelings for her had faded, so what? She would find a way.
In the following period, Martin Wright noticed that Chloe Young seemed to be everywhere. From the mouths of various friends, he heard about how much he used to like Chloe Young, about his past persistence in pursuing her. During that time, Chloe Young seemed omnipresent, always cropping up in his life.
Meanwhile, Mia Sutton seemed to have disappeared from his life.
...
Mia Sutton didn’t care about him, because at the end of August, she received a phone call that blew her away.
"Student, student, are you still listening?" said the person on the other end of the line.
Mia Sutton finally came back to her senses from the shock. "I’m listening. I understand. Thank you, I will handle it promptly."
After hanging up, she still felt a bit out of it. It was just... she hadn’t expected this.
The call had come from her school. Yes, the school.
She had been out of school life for so long that she had completely forgotten she was still a university student.
Previously, under the control of circumstances, she had been admitted to one of the top universities in the nation, but she had chosen to enter the entertainment industry for Martin Wright. Initially, skipping classes seemed manageable, but eventually, she simply took a leave of absence.
If it weren’t for the school calling today, she would’ve completely forgotten about this. It had been so long since she last attended school.
Mia Sutton felt desperate, looking at the script in her hand and the notification from the school. Given her poor grades in first-year and her leave of absence in the second, if things continued like this, the school would eventually expel her.
Mia Sutton: "..." All the trouble she brought upon herself, but she’d have to fix it even if it meant crying.
But... it was truly difficult for her.
...
So, when Jensen Sterling returned from a business trip and entered the house, he found a young girl sleeping on the sofa, surrounded by various materials scattered everywhere—on the sofa, the table, even the floor.
Jensen Sterling paused for a moment, then bent down to pick up the things on the floor and took a look. Homework? University homework?
Mia Sutton was also awakened by his actions. She opened her eyes and looked at the person in front of her, somewhat groggy. "Mr. Sterling, you’re back?"
Jensen Sterling collected the last book and then sat next to Mia Sutton, replying, "Yes, I’m back."
After a moment, looking at the pile of materials beside her, he asked curiously, "What are all these?"
Upon hearing this, Mia Sutton suddenly felt wide awake. Looking at the stack of documents in front of her, she said with a blank expression, "This is all the trouble I created for myself." Her tone was filled with utter despair.
