Chapter 94: Their decided fates - Even to the next life

The police dragged Bernard out of there while he yelled uncontrollably,

"This is impossible! Impossible. Do you know who I am? How dare you do this to me? How dare you?" His yells went unheard as everyone turned to pay attention to the next person to be trailed.

The judge hit his gavel on the table, silencing the hall.

"Victoria Ross." He called out and Victoria flinched. She had been shivering in fear after seeing her husband getting dragged off like that. "Although your involvement in your husband’s acts was not extreme, we cannot overlook the fact that you supported him and also instigated your daughter, letting her carry out the devious acts she did."

Victoria gulped.

"Your punishment will be lifetime imprisonment in Janus." As soon as he said this, and hit his gavel down, everyone started murmuring.

Janus was a famous prison house for women. It’s said that only those women who were involved in completely heinous acts were sent there and the rate at which inmates died there was no joke.

Victoria fell on her butt as well, muttering the words,

"I’m done for. It’s over." Her dilated pupils showed her fear.

The guards took her away and the last person was placed on the stand.

Valerie kept her eyes on Lucy, glaring at her with glowing eyes. Lucy caught her eyes and growled like a beast.

"Those obscene eyes." She yelled but the guard standing next to her activated the collar on her neck, shocking her and bringing her back to her senses.

’Oh Lucy, just look at what you have been reduced to.’ Valerie thought. ’But I will never be able to let go of the resentment in my heart.’ she clenched her fists. ’Till the next life... I will make sure to make you pay for your crimes even then.’

"Kpack! Kpack!" Came the sound of the gavel. "Silence in the court." The judge announced and the murmuring died down. "I shall now begin the hearing of Lucy Ross." He said, and the entire place went completely silent and the silence was a bit stiffening to those anticipating her fate.

Everyone had their guess that she would indeed be killed but they were contemplating on the method.

"For every person that has died in your hands," he began, "You are to receive a whip slash, with the hopes that that would ease the souls of your victims." He said, and everyone started murmuring once more, causing him to hit his gavel once more and silence followed. "And because there are no single records stating that you have a mental issue or otherwise, you will be punished according to every sane citizen."

Valerie shut her eyes for a moment. That was honestly where they made a mistake.

Bernard Ross did not think to look ahead in case his daughter’s schemes got caught one day. Such blind confidence has landed them in their deaths.

She opened her eyes.

If Lucy had a mental health record, she would’ve been set free right away, even if she ended up killing so many people. Rather, not entirely free as she would be administered to a mental hospital right away.

She was thankful they were idiots till the end.

"For the evil deeds you have done, for every false accusation, bribery, and thus far, you are hereby sentenced to death by electric shock a day after receiving the whips." He hit his gavel and Lucy went through a mental breakdown once more, yelling and screaming.

"I will kill you all. What do you mean death by electric shock?" She screamed and the guard in charge of her collar shocked her again.

At first, she pretended to be calm.

"Court stand!"

Everyone in the courtroom stood up and watched the guards drag Lucy away but before he could reach the exit, she regained herself and roared.

"It’s all that bitches fault." She managed to push the guard aside and rushed towards Valerie. "I’ll kill you."

But just before she got to Valerie, the guard pressed the shock button once more, stopping her halfway. He increased the intensity of the shock since it looked like the only way to get her out of there calmly was if she was unconscious.

Lucy fell on her face and struggled to look up.

The person in front of her was Max who was guarding Valerie and glaring sharp daggers at her.

Behind him, Valerie smirked, victoriously and mouthed,

"I win."

From there, Lucy lost consciousness and the guards took her away.

The hearing ended there. Rather eventful as it was covered by a lot of news outlets.

"Come, let’s have dinner together." Max said to Valerie, holding her hand as they walked out of the court hall.

She looked at him in silence for a while and then smiled. How was she going to tell him that she couldn’t have dinner with him? And that expression on his face... She really wanted to spend time with him but...

"Maybe another time?" She said and his face fell. His eager expression was replaced with a frown. "I’m not trying to make you mad." She said and reached out to him, brushing his chin lightly with her thumb. "But I need to get back to the office."

"Valerie, it’s almost 6, so you still need to get back to the office? It’s late." He pointed out and she shook her head.

"I know but... I have so much to do. The more I try to put it off, the more problems will arise. At the least, I’ll pick up something on the way so I can at least eat while working." She explained but that did not help matters as well.

Max was upset. He wanted to spend time with his wife but these stupid problems were keeping her away. And she didn’t even have a trusty assistant yet so it was way more hectic as she would have to check everything thoroughly to make sure nothing was being sabotaged.

Those snakes that were on her uncle’s side fled when things went haywire. He wished he could just catch them and crush their skulls.

He pulled Valerie’s hand to his face and rested his cheek on it while thinking of how to make Valerie stay with him and him alone.

If she didn’t have the company to worry about, he would be able to tie her to himself, right?

’Should I blow up the company?’ he thought, his eyes slowly growing dark and cold. ’No, that won’t do. The other branches will also be a problem. Then, should I blow them all up? I should be the only one Valerie needs. The only one she can rely on. I...’

"Max?" Valerie called and Max snapped out of the greedy intrusive thoughts that were eating up his rationality. "Are you okay?" She asked and he blinked.

He looked at the surprised expression on her face. She also looked worried. He shut his eyes for a moment. He shouldn’t think like that.

This company was the only thing her parents left her. He would be committing a grave sin against her if he went that far.

Rather, instead of thinking of blowing up the nuisance, it was best to come up with a solution to ease it.

"I’m fine." He said and kissed her hand. "I just feel really lonely." He drew closer to her, trying to tempt her with his looks and his eyes. Then, he placed her hand on his chest and added, "Will you really not accompany me tonight?"

Valerie went silent, her cheeks flushing in embarrassment. 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦

"That..."

"Are you two done talking?" Mariam asked, interrupting the two and Max clicked his tongue. He was this close to convincing her to stay with him tonight. Such and timing.

"Um," Mariam suddenly became bashful with a flushed cheek standing in front of Valerie.

She had never really spoken to her face-to-face after the big reveal, mostly because of guilt, so it was a bit embarrassing to be standing in front of her.

"What is it?" Valerie asked, unsure why she wasn’t as feisty as she originally was.

"Well, Gramps wanted to know if you’d stay for dinner." As soon as she said this, Grandpa Leo, who was waiting in the car, scratched his ear and exclaimed.

"Hm, who’s talking about me behind my back."

"Probably your enemies." Tiana responded and laughed. She looked out the window at the three standing together and smiled. "Or maybe a few people who care about you."

Valerie felt conflicted. She looked at her phone in her hand and pursed her lips. She was already supposed to be on the road but she was still here.

There was so much to do, so much to see through and so much she had to sign. This much work is still new to her so it was overwhelming. Though it wasn’t like she couldn’t handle it. She just felt too much pressure.

"Are you worried about your work?" Mariam suddenly asked, looking confident again and throwing aside her bashful side. "Big brother said you were yet to find a trusty assistant."

Valerie looked up at Max. Yes, but where was that leading to?

"If you don’t mind, I would like to help out in the meantime. Trust me, I’ll be the best assistant."
