Chapter 155: I’m going to be a great-grandfather?

Valerie opened her eyes and the first person she saw was the gynecologist who had conducted her pregnancy test.

"It seems with or without the knowledge of your pregnancy, your enemies seem to want you dead." He said, closing the pad in his hand. "Mrs Ross. Or should I call you Mrs Stewart? Since you’re married and all."

So, he found out. Well, with all the commotion and all, her true identity would have to be revealed.

She touched her mouth. The nosemask was no longer there.

When did she take it off again?

No, that didn’t matter at the moment. She needed to go see Max.

She tried to get up but her head felt like it was being hammered to a wall.

"Ngh!" She grunted.

"Please stay in bed for a while." The doctor said. "You fainted from stress which affected your entire body. Mrs Stewart, you’re pregnant so you should try to calm down."

"Calm down." Valerie muttered and then her eyes widened. "Calm down? How can I calm down?" She tried to get up from the bed. "I have to see my husband."

"Please heed my advice." The doctor said, and Valerie looked at him confused.

"Did... Did something happen?" She asked but he shook his head.

"Nothing happened. His operation was a success and he’s currently unconscious." Hearing that, she gave out a sigh of relief.

"Thank God. I thought..." She bit her lip. "I thought I’d lose him. I..." Tears slowly slid down her eyes as she shivered. "I thought I’d lose once more. I... I’m glad."

The doctor watched her sob and did not try to console her. Rather, he let her cry out the tension in her heart. It would relieve her greatly.

Then, someone walked in. It was Tiana and Mariam.

"Ah, thank goodness." Mariam said, going over to hug her. "You finally woke up."

Valerie hugged her back but did not stop crying. The tears just wouldn’t stop.

"There, there. All will be well." She said to her, gently rubbing her back. "My brother will be fine before you know it so cheer up." She broke the hug and smiled at her.

Valerie sniffed and nodded.

"Then, I’ll leave you some privacy with your family." The doctor said and left.

"How’s he doing?" Valerie asked and blew the snort from her nose.

"Luckily, he’s out of danger but he took quite the wound in the head." Tiana explained and covered her face. "Valerie, sweetie, when you asked how I was so calm, the truth is, I wasn’t." She sat down. "My knees were weak, and my head was clouded with the thought of my son dying in front of me. I... I couldn’t move for a second there. But then I thought of you. You love him with all your heart and he brought you light. Seeing him in that situation must’ve broken you entirely. If none of us acted and wasted time dwelling in denial, he would certainly die." She bowed her head. "So I pushed it all aside and went to save my son."

"Thank you, mother." Valerie said.

"And also, with you being pregnant, there was definitely no way you would think rationally and I couldn’t put the load on your shoulder, so..."

"Wait," Mariam said and they both looked at her to see her shocked expression.

"Ah, surprise?" Tiana smiled awkwardly.

"Sister Valerie is pregnant?" She yelled and just then, grampa Leo walked in, with the same shocked expression and exclaimed loudly,

"I’m going to be a great-grandfather?"

’Ah, this was not how I planned to reveal the news to them but... Whatever.’ Valerie thought and nodded.

Grampa Leo approached her and held her hands in his.

"So, that was the reason you came to the hospital." He said and his eyes fell in sadness. "Does my grandson know yet?"

Valerie shook her head and the sadness in his eyes deepened.

"Oh, for such a tragedy to happen on such an auspicious day." He said.

Tiana placed her hand on his back and patted him.

"There there, Dad. It’s going to be alright. Once Max wakes up, we’ll let him know right away. It’ll be the best news he could ever wake up to." She said and he nodded.

"You’re right." He said. "Let’s not feel down and make the baby uncomfortable. Oh boy, I have to start preparing for my great-grandchild’s coming." He suddenly grew excited. "I need to buy a lot of things. Clothes, toys, rows of bicycles. Oh, and I..."

"Grampa," Valerie called. "For now," she said, "...at least, till Max recovers, let’s hold out on the baby things first."

"Oh! Oh, of course. I... I got over my head with the excitement and all. Let us wait for my grandson to recover, and then we shall proceed to shower your unborn child with lots of love and gifts."

His statement made them laugh, and the heavy atmosphere finally eased up a bit.

"But this is rather serious." Grampa Leo said, his expression suddenly turning serious. "The interval between my grandson exiting his car and going back to it was short. How were they able to plant the bomb so fast?"

"Nothing crops up on the surveillance footage either." Mariam explained. "A few kids were playing around. They were the ones who touched the door handle and left fingerprints that alerted my brother. If not for that, then..." She looked at fhem. They all knsq what would’ve happened then.

"The cameras weren’t tampered with either. It’s strange." Tiana added. "So strange that..."

"It’s almost as if the bomb had been strapped on the car the whole time." Valerie completed her words before her and everyone fell silent.

That was the only reasonable reasoning they could come up with and it was deadly.

And if that had been the case then the reason the bomb only exploded then was because... They were targeting Valerie the whole time.

Valerie shivered at that realization.

’Ah, it’s... It’s my fault Max is in this condition. It’s all my fault. I’m the one they’re after.’ her thoughts rang negatively.

It was probably people from Romaine who were trying to kill her. They were trying to get rid of her and in doing so, they were hurting innocent people.

"Valerie. Don’t beat yourself up. It’s not your fault." Tiana called but she was beating herself up already in her thoughts.

Just then, Steven walked in, causing everyone to frown.

"Ah, it looks like I am not welcome." He said, smiling nonchalantly. "But I can’t help it; I am worried about my sister-in-law’s health, and I couldn’t help but overhear that you are..." His eyes brimmed. "...expecting a child. Congratulations."

Valerie glared at him. Whatever he was plotting by coming to give his supposed concerns. She would never let him get close to her husband.

For all she knew, he was as bad a threat as Romaine.
