Chapter 142: Don’t worry too much, young master

The method that the perpetrator used to set up that assassination attempt was like this,

If the driver failed to run them into the tanker and kill them in the explosion, he would explode while they were taking him to get interrogated and if lucky, he would finally get to kill them with that method.

And even if he did succeed, there was the bomb implanted in the car to make sure there was no single evidence left of the manipulated brakes.

That way, the investigators would never know how they died and that would close the case right away.

"I said I’m fine." Valerie said for the fifth time while they were on their way to Stewart’s mansion.

"I’m not convinced." Max said. He held on to her hand and watched her closely, fearing that she wasn’t okay, as she claimed.

Valerie had refused to go to the hospital. She wasn’t hurt anywhere, at least not physically, but was only a little bit shaken by the incident, so she insisted that she wouldn’t go to the hospital.

"You have to be. There’s no need to go there." She said and tightened her grip around his hand. He looked down at her hand.

’Ah, all this commotion made me forget.’ he thought and brought her hand to his lips and kissed it. ’There are still awful memories of hospitals.’

It wasn’t like she couldn’t go to a hospital; she could bear with it, but the smell of disinfectants always made her recall the memories of the psychiatric hospital. She was beaten, forced to drink soup doused with sleeping pills, injected countless times with various substances, and never being able to think or decide for herself.

It was horrible and that memory sometimes haunted her, especially with the thought of visiting a hospital.

"The only reason I’ll ever go to a hospital is if there’s a real emergency." She said and turned to look at him, smiling at him to assure him. "But this time, I’m fine, trust me. So there’s no need."

Max pressed her hands against his forehead, trying to suppress the anxiety in his heart. He was worried for her well-being and health.

"Then, let’s get you to rest up first." He said and turned to Jeremy driving the car. "How much longer?"

"We’re almost there, boss." Jeremy said.

"Don’t worry too much, Young master. We’ll get there safely." Oscar assured him and he turned back to Valerie.

"Yes."

They finally got to the mansion and at the door to welcome them was Grampa Leo. He stood with his back crouched, leaning on his cane in worry.

As soon as the car parked in front of him, he raised his head.

Max helped Valerie down, and she swiped her hair back, looking towards the mansion’s entrance.

"My dear," she heard Grampa Leo call and saw him approaching them. "I heard what happened, are you okay? Are you hurt anywhere?"

"I’m fine, Grampa." Valerie said.

"But we can’t be too sure. Let’s get you to the hospital." He said, and Valerie froze up. But she immediately collected herself and smiled.

"That won’t be necessary. I’m truly alright." She said. "Do you think Max would’ve let me be if I wasn’t?"

"That’s true, but..."

"Rather," She interrupted him. "Why don’t we go inside? I could really use a chair."

"Oh, right. Of course." Grampa Leo said and offered his arm to lead her in. She accepted and held him in.

As they walked in, the occupants of the mansion, Stewart’s descendants, all watched and whispered.

The news of the explosion had already spread amongst them, and they were well aware that someone tried to claim their lives.

"Who could it be, though?"

"That was such a ’loud’ move. Do you think Steven did that?"

"Shhh! Don’t make silly assumptions that will get you targeted."

"Ha! Mrs Ross has a lot of enemies so it would’ve been one of them."

"But that scale was huge. And we aren’t sure who the attacker was trying to get since they were both there. One is the potential heir to Stewart and the other is the owner of Ross. I’d say that person was after Maximus."

"Shhh!"

Yes, it could be seen like that. After all, Maximus’ biggest supporter was his wife, the owner of the second biggest company in the country, so she was, just like him, a potential threat.

"How are you feeling?" Grampa Leo asked as Oscar handed her a cup of hot tea and she nodded.

"Like I said, I’m fine. There’s nothing wrong with me." She said, accepting the tea with a little word of ’thanks’ to Oscar, who bowed and stepped back.

"This situation was far too dangerous." Grampa Leo said. "Whoever it was, they didn’t leave any loopholes, just like when your parents were killed."

Hearing that, Valerie clenched her fists.

"Gramps," Max called. "We met Chris Romaine." He said, and Grampa Leo’s eyes widened.

"You... You met him? What did he do? Did he try to kill you?" He asked, directing his question at Valerie.

They both shook their heads.

Valerie folded her arms, brushing her arm lightly, and said,

"He made a proposal."

"What proposal?"

"Since he claimed he wasn’t the one who wanted me dead nor the one responsible for my parent’s death, he decided he wanted to ’shelter’ me from them." She said, turning her head away. "He asked me to come back to Romaine."

"And then what? You refused, didn’t you?" He asked, and Valerie nodded sadly.

"I did." She said. "And so, he asked Max to divorce me in exchange for his full support while he ran for the position of chairman and crushed his enemies, but Max refused as well. And thus, he resulted in threats."

She looked towards Max.

"He said we would regret it." Max said, interlocking his fingers together in front of him. "He told me I would never be able to protect her."

Yes, that was a threat. A solid one.

What could stop them from pointing him out to be the perpetrator of the assassination attempt?

The atmosphere turned rigid after Max’s words. Something like that coming from the chairman of Romaine himself... Didn’t that mean trouble? Just what in the world was he planning?

How could they prepare for what was to come when they didn’t know which direction it would come from?
