Chasing The Vengeful Villainous Heiress-Chapter 129: I already sent my guards home
Tiana nodded her head and patted her daughter’s head.
"It’s okay. Love comes to a person more than once. First love never works out." She said, aiming to console her.
"But Brother and Sister Valerie seemed to work out."
"Well, there are exceptions in life." Tiana said, smiling nervously. "And also, if your first love doesn’t love you back, it’s not the end of the world. It only means that person wasn’t the right one for you. If you force it, you might live to regret it so that’s why it’s easier to let go than leave regrets."
Mariam lowered her head. Yeah, she guessed that was all she could do for now.
"But cheer up." Tiana wrapped her arms around her neck. "If you find someone later and you don’t want to let them go, we’ll do everything in our power to bring you two together."
"We?"
"Yeah, your family." Tiana smiled and though Mariam already knew of this fact, the reassurance made her feel warm.
"Yeah, I got it."
Then, Stephanie approached them.
"Mariam," she called and they both turned to see her approaching without her bodyguards.
They were outside the hall so her bodyguards were supposed to follow. Where were they?
"Steph, what’s wrong?" Mariam asked.
"Mariam," Stephanie grabbed her hands, looking at her with desperate and pleading eyes. "Please, can you let me stay over for tonight?"
"What?" Mariam and Tiama exclaimed shocked.
"Ah!" Stephanie exclaimed, blinked her eyes twice, and lowered her head. "Oh, that must’ve sounded wrong. I’m sorry if it’ll inconvenience you. I just..."
"Wait, Steph, I didn’t mean it like that. I was just surprised." Mariam said, hoping she didn’t disappoint Stephanie with her response.
Though she already made up her mind to never see her again, she couldn’t vanquish her feelings so easily so she was worried.
"Is... Is that so?" Stephanie asked, gazing at the hand that Mariam was desperately holding onto. ’That worked out fine.’ she thought and raised her gaze, looking pitiful.
"Mariam, is there a reason why you can’t go home? Is someone threatening you?"
"Well," she averted her eyes. "Not really." She said and returned her gaze to Mariam. "You know, we’ll be going to our different countries for a long time and I still don’t know the university you’ll be going to, and I..." She shook her head. "It’s all just excuses. I just want to spend some time with you before you go back to your country."
"Ah." Mariam exclaimed. Was that it? Why though?
At a time like this, shouldn’t she spend more time with her boyfriend? Why was she leading her on even when she already decided to cut the thread?
"Well, about that," Mariam darted her eyes. Well, she wouldn’t mind living in the same house with Stephanie for a few days but the problem was... "It’s not really my house."
"What do you mean? It’s your brother’s house, is it not?" Stephanie asked.
"Yes but..." She pursed her lips. How was she going to explain that her brother was already considering throwing them out because they were imposing on his honeymoon space?
He would definitely not appreciate another person imposing.
"I already sent my guards home." Stephanie said sadly. "But I can call them back. It’s alright if you don’t want me to stay. We can always talk on the phone."
She looked pathetic and Mariam felt conflicted.
She didn’t want to make her brother any more uncomfortable during his long-awaited honeymoon.
"That’s..."
Tiana watched from the side, observing Stephenie.
She didn’t know if it was because she already saw the manipulating side of her or because she was a Romaine but... Why did her words sound like dog shit to her?
It felt like she was acting and her words were filled with insincerity. She looked pathetic, like someone in need of help but it was no big deal to call back her guards unless they already got on a plane to leave the country which wasn’t the case.
What nonsense? She wasn’t staying because she would miss Mariam. She just wanted to get Mariam attached to her even more without hopes of them getting together.
It was devious.
"First off," Tiana spoke up and they both looked up at her. "You should tell your friend that we’ll be staying at a hotel suite from tonight."
"Huh?" Stephanie looked lost and Mariam turned to her.
"Yeah, it’s true. My brother and his wife will have the whole villa to themselves." Mariam said, but Stephanie was not happy with this. How will she watch that night if she stays in the hotel away from her?
She has to be close to her for her to actually frame her of hurting her and then Mariam will hate her.
"Why should you move out? Isn’t your brother’s house your house as well? There should be enough space for a few more people, right?" She unconsciously let go of her emotion, causing Mariam to look at her strangely. "I mean, does your brother really want to make you feel uncomfortable just so his wife can be comfortable alone with him? That’s not fair."
"A hotel suite isn’t actually uncomfortable and..." Mariam realized something and she furrowed her eyebrows in suspicion. "Wait, I never said it was Sister Valerie’s idea though." She said, and Stephanie flinched, once again, realized she had slipped up. "Why would you even come to that conclusion?"
Tiana got it. Stephanie wanted to turn Mariam against Valerie. Why though? Wait, was she really involved in what was going on and they didn’t know?
"Uh, because," sweat dropped from her chin. This was not looking good. "...well, your brother has never treated you like this before, so I thought... I thought his wife was the one making things hard for you. And..."
"Hm, someone seems to be talking about me," Max’s voice attracted their attention and they all turned to see him approaching with Valerie who had his coat on.
Her face was a bit dazed and that confirmed their suspicions as to what they had been up to.
"And my wife as well." He stopped in front of them, his eyes on Stephanie. "It seemed interesting. Is there something we’re a part of that we don’t know? Please, do tell."
Stephanie looked at him feeling his dangerous gaze and gulped. She might’ve slipped up a little bit this time around.
