Chapter 340: Uncle Ash

Amy left the mansion hours before Ash’s arrival at the airport to drop by the bakery. She brought Avery with her causing Tom to keep on looking at the rearview mirror. Thankfully he is wearing sunglasses and no one can see where his eyes are looking.

Mitch sat in front beside him instructing him where to go, "Amy, which bakery are we going to?"

"The one that sells Ava’s favorite cinnamon roll. I forgot the name, do you still remember where it is?" Amy asked while trying to entertain Avery with some toys.

"Yes, I still remember it," Mitch said before pointing the direction to Tom.

"It is Ava’s death anniversary and I want to give Ash something that will make him smile when he remembers Ava. From now on, no more crying on this date. This cutie is turning three and he is starting to question things. I don’t want him to remember his father in tears," Amy said after putting a headset on Avery while watching cartoons on his tablet.

Tom felt his heart ache as if someone had pinched it. It just confirms that the little boy is Ash’s son. But what can he do, it is what it is.

Amy asked Mitch and Tom to order a lot of pastries and different colored cupcakes that Avery loves. She also asked for a small round cake that will be put on top of the cupcake tower while she and Avery play in the playground just outside the bakery.

"Are we going to put some greeting on the cake ma’am?" The bakery worker asked Mitch.

"Yes. Please write ’Happy 3rd Birthday, Avery’ and add green candles too," Mitch instructed before going to the waiting area with Tom.

"I thought they were celebrating a death anniversary? But it’s the boy’s birthday too?" Tom hesitated to ask Mitch at first but still went with it.

"Yes, it is both. They plan to have a bigger celebration next week since it’s also Jayson’s birthday. But Mr. Brighton needed to fly back here right away so the family decided to have a little party tonight. You and I are invited, and so is everyone in the mansion," Mitch exclaimed happily, smiling at Tom.

"That’s weird and awkward. Having to celebrate both death and birth at the same time, don’t you think?" Tom said.

Mitch sighed at looked outside where Amy and Avery were merrily playing. "It was a sad and happy occasion three years ago. But Ava had made the biggest sacrifice of her life. She told us to never ever get sad when she dies because she wanted it that way and was happy with it."

Tom held a puzzled look. He wanted to ask more but refrained from doing so. He reminded himself to be patient and that he will get to know everything in time. He must not waste this chance for there might not be another one.

Despite the waiting time they spent in the bakery, they still arrived early at the airport. As they wait for Ash’s plane, Tom can’t help but keep staring at Amy and Avery. He was trying to find any similarity on their faces but found none. Avery does not resemble his mom at all, not one bit.

"Tom, you will push Mr. Brighton while I help the team carry his things," Mitch said in a hurry when she saw the people from the flight walking out of the exit.

’Push? What does she mean?’ Tom asked himself and heard Avery shouting excitedly.

He steeled himself and watched Avery run towards the passenger exit.

"Papa! Papa!"

Tom shifted his gaze to Amy and saw eh smiling and enthusiastically walking toward her husband.

However, the sorrow that his heart is enduring changes into confusion when he sees the man that Amy and Avery greet.

"Who is he?" Tom asked Mitch while looking at the sickly thin man in the wheelchair.

"Isn’t it obvious? He is Mr. Asher Brighton. Tom, you have to be perceptive if you want to last in this kind of job," Mitch said and smiled while watching the interaction of the family.

"She married an old man?" Tom commented.

Mitch, who didn’t like Tom’s words elbowed him, "He is not old. He is only a few years older than Amy. He got sick because of the explosion in the wellsite. His health worsened while Avery was still in his mother’s womb. And I do not like your tone. Fix it, or it’s gonna be me who will fire you this time."

Tom nodded and fixed his expression. He is not that stupid to lose his job just because of his unsolicited comments. Mitch then signaled him to push Ash’s wheelchair to their car while Avery was happily sitting on his father’s lap.

"Is my favorite son a good boy to Mommy?" Ash asked in a hoarse voice before coughing really hard.

"He is a good boy, that is why he will go back to his stroller and sit there because Papa is not feeling well." Amy then signaled Mitch to take the boy from Ash’s lap.

"I am fine, Amy. You worry too much. We’ve talked about this. This is just normal." Ash reached for Amy’s hand which she eagerly handed to him. They made their way to the car hand in hand while Tom pushed the wheelchair as he frowned.

Tom is starting to have a headache trying to understand what is going on. ’How can she marry a sick man like that and have a child with him? Is she that desperate and lonely?’

When they arrived at the Welsh Mansion, Tom was surprised to see that everyone was outside and the main entrance was decorated with balloons and a welcome banner.

And as soon as Tom opened the door for Ash and Amy, a crying Lia greeted the couple.

"Waaa~ Mommy, Tommy won’t let me help in the tent!"

Tom saw Amy facepalm herself before Tommy came running towards them.

"Is it true, Tommy?" Ash asked the little boy.

"No, Uncle Ash! I only told her to go to the kitchen because Mommy said that Lia would help Grandma. I did not make her cry, Uncle Ash!" Tommy exclaimed.

’Uncle? He is not the father of the twins?’ Tom wanted to faint. Just when he thought that Ash’s current sickly appearance surprised him a lot– he was so wrong.
